On the last day of my 3-night, 4-day trip to Osaka & Kyoto,
I stayed in Kyoto.
From Kyoto Station to Kansai International Airport,
you can get there directly just by taking the Haruka Express!
I've put together a complete guide covering everything from Haruka Express reservations and QR ticket usage
to prices and train schedules!
1. Getting from Kyoto Station to Kansai Airport

There are two main ways to get from Kyoto Station to Kansai Airport: train and bus!
Travel Method | Travel Time | One-Way Fare | Features |
🚆 Haruka Express | Approx. 80 min | ~$13 | On-time departure, on-time arrival Direct transfer |
🚌 Airport Limousine Bus | Approx. 90+ min | 2,800 JPY (approx. ~$18) | Varies depending on traffic conditions |
Firstly, the bus has the disadvantage of being more expensive than the train.
Plus, while it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, this can vary greatly
depending on road conditions, so I don't recommend the bus!

The Haruka Express is not only faster,
but most importantly, it can guarantee arrival times,
making it the most popular mode of transport
for travelers who need to catch a flight.
Having taken the train myself, I was very satisfied – it has dedicated luggage space and
comfortable seats!
2. Reserving Your Haruka Express Ticket

For the Haruka Express, buying online is absolutely the way to go,
because there's a significant difference between the online price and the on-site price!
(Even I was surprised when I found this out!! 😮)
| Reserved Seat | Non-Reserved Seat |
On-site Purchase | 3,590 JPY (approx. ~$22) | 3,060 JPY (approx. ~$19) |
Online Purchase | ~$13 |
I had no idea the price difference would be so significant –
it's even cheaper than buying a non-reserved seat on-site!
While online purchase prices can change with the exchange rate,
currently, with the Japanese Yen's exchange rate being favorable,
you can buy a one-way adult ticket for around ~$13.
(I personally bought mine for about ~$13.)
And when you book the Haruka Express online,
you won't need to hunt for a ticket counter or wait in line,
saving you time and hassle in many ways – how convenient is that!

3. Where to Catch the Haruka Express at Kyoto Station

Once you've reserved your Haruka ticket,
all you need to do is smoothly board the train at Kyoto Station.
You'll usually board at Kyoto Station Platform 30!
However, it's occasionally Platform 7,
so always double-check the departure times and platform on the electronic display board!

The signs pointing towards Kansai Airport are very clear,
so you'll have no trouble finding your way.
Just keep in mind that Kyoto Station is quite large, so considering you'll likely be pulling luggage,
it's wise to allow an extra 5-10 minutes before your departure time.
4. How to Use Your Haruka QR Ticket

Alright, once you've purchased your Haruka QR ticket,
the next step is to reserve your date, time, and seat.
It's not complicated, but there's a specific order to follow,
so it's best to check the information below as you go.
And don't worry – it's all clearly laid out in English!

① First, once you've purchased your Haruka train ticket,
a page will pop up where you can access your voucher link!
② After clicking your voucher, scroll down and you'll see
the link to "Link WEST QR Ticket to your account".
Click on it!

③ After signing up and entering the verification code sent to your email,
register your "serial code" and your ticket list will pop up!
If you're traveling with companions, you can add them by clicking "+ Register Ticket" below.
I registered my friend's ticket along with mine!

④ Click on one of your registered tickets,
and you can reserve your designated seat and time.
Make sure to double-check the date, time, and train direction carefully!
If you have multiple tickets registered,
you can select them individually to ensure you get seats next to each other.

⑤ Once you've completed these steps, the "Start Use" button will appear.
Clicking this button generates your QR code,
so it's best to click it just before you're ready to board the train and scan your QR code.
That's because once you hit the "Start Use" button, you won't be able to change your reservation time!
If you need to modify the time, you can do it via the "Change" button.
Oh, and a quick heads-up: screenshots of the QR code won't be recognized, so make sure to use the live one!

Upon entry after QR code recognition,
if it displays like this, you're perfectly set!
