A Chance Discovery During a Solo Stroll

On this particular day, my friend was still asleep at our hotel, so I decided to wander around Kyoto on my own.
Our hotel was about a 12-minute walk away, making it a pleasant distance for a casual stroll. That's when I unexpectedly stumbled upon KAWA CAFE.
Being a cafe right on the Kamogawa River, the view looked inviting, so I decided to check it out.
I didn't make a reservation, and there was no wait when I arrived, so I was able to get a seat right away.

There are indoor seats too.
I was lucky enough to find all the riverfront seats empty, so I snagged one.
Since it was a spontaneous visit, I'm not sure if this cafe is usually crowded or not.
Outdoor Terrace with Kamogawa River Views

The biggest reason I recommend this place is, without a doubt, the Kamogawa river view.
Unfortunately, to enjoy the river view, there's an additional fee of ~$1. (That explains why there weren't many people outside!)
I chose to sit on the riverfront outdoor terrace, and having the river spread out right before me was simply wonderful, just gazing at the scenery.
It's easy to get caught up in sightseeing during a trip to Kyoto, but taking a moment to sit alone and do nothing, just relax, was incredibly refreshing.
Even though I visited alone without a companion, I wasn't bored at all. In fact, it was a peaceful and healing experience.
Iced Coffee and Mont Blanc Sweets

I ordered two items: an iced coffee and a Mont Blanc dessert for ~$6.
Initially, I just wanted to relax with an iced coffee, but when I visited, I was informed that I had to order a dessert as well.
So, I added the Mont Blanc to my order.
Mont Blanc is a chestnut-based dessert, typically featuring thin strands of chestnut cream piped on top.
While I wasn't specifically craving dessert when I entered, the mandatory order was a slight disappointment. However, rumor has it, I devoured it quite deliciously.
Good to Know Before You Visit
As beautiful as the river view is at KAWA CAFE, there are a few things worth knowing before you go.
First, confirm the dessert order requirement.
When I visited, I couldn't just order a drink; a dessert had to be purchased alongside it.
If you're simply looking for a quick coffee, it's a good idea to check their current ordering policy beforehand.
Second, bring cash.
At the time of my visit, only cash payments were accepted. For travelers who primarily use cards, this might be inconvenient, so I recommend carrying some yen. Many places in Japan still only accept cash, so it's always a good idea to exchange some currency before your trip to Japan!
Third, check the outdoor terrace availability.
The Kamogawa riverfront terrace operates seasonally. If your main goal is to enjoy the river view from an outdoor seat, it's best to confirm their operating schedule in advance.
A Cute Cat at the Cafe

There was also an adorable cat at the cafe!
Warning: Not a toy!
While I couldn't pet it, just watching it was incredibly cute.
If you're a cat lover, keep an eye out for it when you visit!
Overall Thoughts on KAWA CAFE Kyoto
KAWA CAFE Kyoto wasn't a planned destination but a serendipitous find on my way back to the hotel, and I was surprisingly pleased with it.
The time spent sitting on the riverfront outdoor terrace, gazing at the Kamogawa, is what truly stands out in my memory.
Although the mandatory dessert order and cash-only payment were minor inconveniences, the wonderful scenery made me feel it was well worth the visit.
I highly recommend KAWA CAFE for anyone looking to spend some quiet time alone in Kyoto, or for those seeking a relaxing cafe with a Kamogawa river view!
