During our recent 2026 Kyoto adventure, we dedicated a full day to exploring Arashiyama. Our itinerary flowed beautifully: we started at the scenic train track photo spot, ventured through the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (Chikurin), visited Tenryu-ji Temple, then crossed the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge. From there, we headed to MUKU for lunch before continuing to Ryoan-ji Temple and Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion).
We stayed at the Richmond Hotel Kyoto Premier Shijo, which was conveniently located within walking distance of a Randen train station. We took the Randen Line directly to Arashiyama.
Many visitors arrive in Arashiyama early in the morning, so after exploring the main sights, MUKU is perfectly situated for a delightful lunch. It's just past Togetsukyo Bridge as you make your way back down, making it an ideal mid-day stop.
We highly recommend making a reservation in advance, as we did for our lunch visit.

Stepping inside, we were immediately enveloped by a wonderfully cozy and tranquil atmosphere.

We were seated at the counter, which offered a fantastic view of the chefs at work. A warming pre-meal tea was served, and the menu provided detailed explanations of each course.

The menu features a seasonal Japanese home-style course, crafted with the freshest ingredients of the season.
The course is ~$26 per person (4,000 JPY). For an additional ~$3 (500 JPY), you can add Dashi Chazuke, which we highly recommend and opted for!

The first dish served was, I believe, homemade hot tofu. I initially thought it was chawanmushi, but its incredibly smooth texture was so comforting and gentle on the stomach – absolutely delightful!
Next was a rolled omelet (tamagoyaki) with a wonderfully chewy filling. I couldn't quite identify the ingredients, but it was incredibly delicious and a pleasant surprise!
Sitting at the counter offered a fantastic view of the culinary artistry as the dishes were prepared. What I particularly appreciated was that each course was served at our own pace, independently from other diners, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable meal.

Next came the 'Dashi steamed vegetables.' At first, I was a bit surprised by the small portion of rice served with it, but don't worry – this rice is meant to accompany the steamed vegetables, and a separate, larger portion of rice for the main meal follows! As a vegetable lover, I found this dish to be incredibly clean and subtly flavored. The vegetables were perfectly cooked, retaining a pleasant bite and texture.

Then came the beautifully presented main dish. The staff kindly asked for our preferred rice portion size, and knowing I'd be enjoying Dashi Chazuke later, I opted for a small serving.

The plating was absolutely exquisite – so clean and visually appealing! They say we eat with our eyes first, and MUKU certainly delivers on that front. The beautiful presentation makes it an ideal spot for celebrating anniversaries or treating your parents to a memorable meal.
The staff explained the dishes, and we were advised to enjoy them in the numbered order indicated.
The menu, as expected, changes with the seasons, featuring fresh, local ingredients. As a salmon lover, I must say the grilled salmon was particularly outstanding!

One intriguing dish featured octopus atop a cauliflower jelly. The jelly had a unique texture – not exactly chewy, but delightful nonetheless, and surprisingly tasty!

This is the Dashi Chazuke we added to our meal. Simply pour the accompanying dashi broth from the elegant teapot over your rice and toppings to enjoy this comforting and flavorful dish.

Overall, every dish was impeccably prepared and served. The food itself felt light and wholesome, and the tranquil ambiance made for a truly relaxing dining experience. We noticed many families, including those traveling with elderly parents, enjoying their meals here, which speaks volumes about its welcoming atmosphere.
If you're looking to escape the bustling crowds of Arashiyama and savor a clean, comforting, and authentic Japanese home-style meal, I wholeheartedly recommend MUKU. Remember to make a reservation to secure your spot!
