Considering a day trip to Kumamoto from Fukuoka but feeling overwhelmed by the planning?
Before my recent visit, I spent quite a bit of time figuring out the best route. But after experiencing Kumamoto firsthand, I realized that for a day trip, it's far more rewarding to focus on just a few key spots in the city center rather than trying to cram everything in.
My husband and I explored Kumamoto in late November, and I'm excited to share our compact yet incredibly satisfying itinerary with you.

We stayed at the Ref Kumamoto by Vessel Hotel, conveniently located in the Shinsigai area of Kumamoto. After checking out, we wanted to grab lunch nearby, so we headed to Katsuretsutei for some delicious Tonkatsu. It was just a short 3-minute walk from our accommodation!
After a hearty meal, we were ready to kick off our Kumamoto city exploration.
After lunch, we headed to the nearby Sakuramachi shopping mall. On the second floor, you'll find Kumamon Village – it's absolutely the best spot for those iconic Kumamoto day trip photos!
It happened to be a busy day when we visited, with some sort of ramen festival taking place at Sakuramachi, so the area was bustling with people.
Inside Kumamon Village, we found an incredible array of cute merchandise, from plush toys and keychains to coin purses. I personally couldn't stop thinking about the Kumamon-themed baby bibs – perhaps it's because we're planning to start a family soon! I ended up not buying one, and now I regret it a little.
Instead, we picked up some stickers for our luggage and a pair of Chinese zodiac keychains.
Our next stop was the 4th floor of Sakuramachi Square, home to a giant Kumamon statue! This is another fantastic spot for capturing those memorable Kumamoto travel photos with the beloved mascot. Usually, Kumamon doesn't wear clothes, but on this particular day, he was sporting an outfit with the name of Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture – perhaps it was a special event related to the region!
Next, we moved on to Sakuranobaba Johsaien, a place that truly emanates the charm of old Japan.
There's no separate admission fee here, making it a wonderful spot for a leisurely stroll and some sightseeing. The shopping streets were filled with Kumamon characters, which added a fun and playful element to our exploration.
Inside Johsaien, you'll find an interactive facility called 'Wakuwakuza,' which does have its own admission fee. If you're planning to explore the interior of Kumamoto Castle later, it might be more economical to purchase a combined ticket here.
However, my husband and I had previously visited the interior of Osaka Castle and found it didn't quite resonate with us as much as we expected. So, this time, we opted to admire Kumamoto Castle from the outside. Honestly, Japanese castles are incredibly grand and magnificent even when viewed from a distance.
As you wander through the Johsaien shopping arcade, you'll be tempted by a myriad of delicious snacks. We opted for the matcha ice cream, a perfect treat!
It comes in different levels of matcha intensity, and we chose the 5% concentration, which was a bestseller. The sweet yet slightly bitter flavor was just right for cleansing our palates after the Tonkatsu, and we were absolutely delighted with it.
If you're planning a Kumamoto day trip, this matcha ice cream is definitely worth trying!

Of course, for those who prioritize grand attractions and deep dives into history, the absence of an interior Kumamoto Castle tour might be a slight disappointment! Haha.
