Kwai Chai Hong Kuala Lumpur: A Secret Alley & Hidden Gem (2026 Guide)
Escape Kuala Lumpur's modern skyline and step into Kwai Chai Hong, a charming secret alley. Discover vibrant murals, nostalgic 1960s Chinese heritage, and incredible photo opportunities.

When you think of Kuala Lumpur, images of the dazzling Petronas Twin Towers and an endless cityscape of modern skyscrapers probably come to mind first.
But nestled right in the heart of that bustling metropolis, there's a clandestine corner where time seems to have magically stood still.

If you're seeking a hidden gem in Kuala Lumpur, a unique destination with a story to tell, rather than just the usual tourist spots everyone knows, then Kwai Chai Hong is an absolute must-visit.

By day, it's a vibrant tapestry of colorful murals and charming cafes. But as night falls, the alley transforms with the glow of red lanterns, creating an enchanting and dreamlike atmosphere.

While I only had the chance to visit during the bright daytime, basking in the glorious sunshine, I sadly couldn't capture the magical ambiance of Kwai Chai Hong at night.

However, the deep-seated retro vibes permeating every corner of the alley were more than enough to let my imagination run wild and picture its stunning evening glow.
1. Getting to Kwai Chai Hong

Getting here is incredibly easy, especially if you're using public transportation!
🔸Subway (LRT/MRT)
Alight at Pasar Seni Station and it's approximately a 5- to 8-minute walk.
🔸Grab (Ride-Sharing)
Simply set Kwai Chai Hong as your destination, and your driver can drop you off right near the entrance.

We opted for Grab, and our driver dropped us off conveniently right by the entrance.
Right by the entrance, you'll spot Bunn Choon Restaurant, a renowned spot for delicious egg tarts.

Operating for over 100 years since 1893, their egg tarts offer a taste of history, with locals often lining up for a bite of this timeless favorite.

We circled through the entire mural street and then returned to the entrance. If you arrive by Grab, you'll be right there, so don't miss out on trying them!
Stepping Back into the 1960s!

This alley transports you back to the vibrant lives of Chinese immigrants in the 1960s. Red lanterns hang above, intertwined with lush, aged vines, creating a truly enchanting scene.
No matter where you point your camera, the results are simply artistic.
Take a moment to truly observe the intricate murals throughout Kwai Chai Hong. You'll notice many visitors posing and interacting with the artworks, and I couldn't resist joining in the fun!
Also, don't forget to scan the QR codes next to the murals with your phone. You'll be treated to videos playing music and sounds from that era, which really adds to the immersive ambiance.

I sat on the bench in front of the calligrapher grandpa mural...

...and posed like a child playing hopscotch in front of the rubber band game mural.
I even pretended to sharpen a knife in front of the knife sharpener mural.

By simply plopping down in the barbershop chair and framing the shot just right, I managed to capture photos that made it look like I was genuinely at an old-school barbershop.

Given that this mural street vividly portrays the lives of the Chinese diaspora, it's no surprise that many of the visitors here are Chinese tourists.
Beyond just the inner alley of Kwai Chai Hong, the entire outer pathway is also adorned with murals.

There were even spots with paints and brushes laid out, as if an artist was still actively working on a new masterpiece.

The entire alley feels like a living art installation, a perfect backdrop for capturing some truly Instagram-worthy shots. If you're looking for unique places to visit in Kuala Lumpur, I wholeheartedly recommend adding Kwai Chai Hong to your itinerary.

3. Nearby Attractions to Explore
Kwai Chai Hong is conveniently located right next to Petaling Street Chinatown.

It's perfectly situated for a fantastic full-day itinerary. You can easily explore Chinatown, the vibrant Petaling Street Night Market, REXKL, and Central Market. Afterward, head to the River of Life for some beautiful photo opportunities.

The path even continues all the way to Merdeka Square, making it a truly walkable experience.

With plenty of cafes and eateries along the way to stop and recharge, this entire area makes for a perfect full-day exploration.

If your image of Kuala Lumpur was solely glamorous cityscapes, towering buildings, and observation decks,
I highly recommend combining Kwai Chai Hong with its surrounding attractions for a truly memorable full-day adventure.
