KOTOSANKAKU

Located about a 40-minute train ride from Takamatsu city, Kotosankaku is a grand ryokan nestled in the charming small town of Kotohira.

As this was a family trip with my parents, I prioritized excellent facilities and a spacious environment over just finding the cheapest option.

Opened in 1988 and extensively renovated in 1998, it's now recognized as one of Shikoku's premier large onsen hotels! Boasting 11 floors and over 220 guest rooms, it's truly expansive.

Its fantastic location near Kotohira Station makes it super convenient for exploring Omotesando Street, the town's vibrant main thoroughfare, and visiting Kotohira-gu Shrine – truly an ideal base for a suburban getaway!

I opted for the scenic route and traveled by Kotoden surface train.

3. Sansuikan Japanese Style Room

My reserved room was in the Sansuikan building,

so after checking in, I went to the 3rd floor via a connecting pathway.

There's a variety of room types, so you can choose according to your travel style and companions,

including options with private bathrooms, rooms with beds, and more.

I booked through MyRealTrip, but Agoda actually has the lowest prices.

It turned out to be

over ~$35 cheaper per night than the price I booked.

Japanese Style Traditional Non-Smoking Room / Sansuikan

When I book a ryokan hotel, I always go for a tatami room.

I just love the unique ambiance of Japanese tatami rooms.

The floor, with its bamboo mat-like texture, feels so inviting,

and the cozy atmosphere makes for a really good night's sleep!

Another great feature of Japanese-style tatami rooms is having a small but delightful

terrace that doubles as a relaxation space!

It's a space where you can enjoy lush green mountain views through large floor-to-ceiling windows and the charming scenery of the town.

The view from here was a picture in itself.

The view right before sunset is especially beautiful, so if you're planning to stay, make sure to catch it at the perfect time 🥹

There's a small refrigerator on the terrace, which was perfect for enjoying a cold beer in the evening 🍻

In the closet, you'll find yukata to wear for your hot spring bath, along with amenities like toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, and bath towels.

Body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are provided in the bathing area 🫧

There's also a hot water dispenser, kettle, and teacups. It's super convenient for enjoying a warm cup of tea after a hot spring bath, or for making instant noodles for a late-night snack!

There's a washbasin in the space between the bathroom and the shoe cabinet, which is perfectly laid out for washing your hands right after coming in from outside.

The bathroom is small but kept impeccably clean. The bathtub is indeed small, but since I used the public bath for bathing, I didn't feel any inconvenience during my two-day stay.

4. Honest Review of My Stay

It was the perfect accommodation for a hot spring trip, allowing you to truly soak in the charm of Kotohira, a small Japanese town.

Not only the guest rooms but also the hotel's facilities, the public bath, and the restaurant were all well-maintained, so I didn't experience any discomfort or annoyances during my stay.

Since it was a trip with my parents, I meticulously read through local reviews before choosing this accommodation, and fortunately, my parents were also extremely satisfied! 👍🏻

While the quality of the accommodation and service were impressive, the absolute highlights were the hot spring bath and the Kaiseki meal.
