Kikusui Funaguchi Sake Review: Japan's Best Canned Sake
Skip the usual convenience store beer in Japan! Discover Kikusui Funaguchi Namagenshu, a rich, unpasteurized canned sake that brings brewery-fresh flavor for under $3.
For this trip to Japan, I wanted to skip the usual convenience store beers
and try some of the unique, local alcoholic drinks you can only find here.
And one of the things at the top of my list? Cup sake!
You might think convenience store sake in Japan wouldn't be that great,
but you'd be surprised at how many high-quality, budget-friendly gems there are!

Among them, the one I was dying to try is
Kikusui Funaguchi Namagenshu
菊水 ふなぐち 生原酒
The Kikusui Funaguchi Namagenshu cup sake
is super easy to find at Japan's big three convenience stores:
Lawson, FamilyMart, and 7-Eleven.
I checked all three, and they all had it in stock!~

Quick tip: look for it in the shochu and whiskey section, not the beer aisle!~
It costs 379 yen (tax included) for a 200ml can.
It’s the perfect size for a relaxing nightcap back in your hotel room.
What makes this Kikusui convenience store sake so special
is that it’s "Japan’s very first canned draft raw sake (namagenshu)."
✅ Kikusui (菊水)
The name of a brewery in Niigata Prefecture, inspired by a legend of someone living to 700 after drinking water dripping from chrysanthemum leaves.
✅ Funaguchi (ふなぐち)
Refers to the sake that flows straight from the spout of the "fune" (the traditional sake press).
Similar to how "Ichiban Shibori" is used for beer,
it represents the very first press of the freshly brewed sake.
✅ Namagenshu (生原酒)
Means unpasteurized "raw sake (nama)" that hasn't been diluted with water to lower the alcohol percentage, keeping it in its "undiluted state (genshu)."
Because namagenshu contains active enzymes,
it is incredibly delicate and highly sensitive to light and oxygen.
That's why back in the day, you could only taste it if you visited the brewery in person.

However, Kikusui Brewery revolutionized this
by introducing a light-blocking aluminum can that completely blocks UV rays,
successfully allowing for mass distribution while keeping that fresh-from-the-brewery taste alive on convenience store and supermarket shelves nationwide.
Given how tricky namagenshu is to store and distribute,
the fact that you can easily grab it at a local Japanese convenience store
meant I absolutely had to try it!~

Sake Name | Kikusui Funaguchi Namagenshu |
Brewery | Kikusui Brewery |
Classification | Honjozo |
Rice Polishing Ratio | 70% |
ABV (Alcohol by Volume) | 19% |
Sake Rice | 100% Niigata Rice |
While standard sake usually sits around 15% ABV,
this Kikusui convenience store cup sake is an undiluted "genshu," bringing its ABV to a punchier 19%.

Pop the can open, and you're instantly greeted by a sweet, fruity aroma!~
Even with the high alcohol content, the actual taste of alcohol is surprisingly subtle.
Being a genshu, it has a rich, full-bodied presence,
yet it goes down incredibly smooth with a deep, savory umami finish.
A true namagenshu is known for having a rich umami flavor paired with fruity notes,
and I was blown away by how perfectly this convenience store cup sake captured that!~
To get the best out of namagenshu, you absolutely have to drink it ice-cold.
While it'll be somewhat chilled right after buying it at the store,
I highly recommend popping it in your hotel fridge for a bit before cracking it open.~

If 19% ABV feels a bit too intense for you,
I'd recommend grabbing a cup of ice from the convenience store,
or using the ice from your hotel to enjoy it on the rocks!
Also, since it's a stronger sake, pairing it with some snacks is a must.
Since I was having it late at night, I paired it with a light convenience store salad.
Because the sake itself has such a deep, rich umami flavor,
it would actually pair wonderfully with bolder, more flavorful snacks too.
The iconic yellow can is the most popular, original Kikusui Funaguchi Namagenshu,
but they also have premium lines: the red can (Ginjo Namagenshu) and the black can (Kunko).
I really wanted to try those as well,
but unfortunately, I couldn't spot them at the convenience stores this time around.
Definitely adding them to my bucket list for my next trip to Japan!~

Next time you visit a convenience store on your Japan trip, instead of your usual go-to beer,
why not try something unique that you can easily find on their shelves?
I highly recommend Kikusui Funaguchi Namagenshu—a surprisingly excellent convenience store sake that is definitely worth a try! ~
