Your Day Trip to Yilan County, Taiwan
A Visit to Kavalan Whisky Distillery & My Review
Booking Hacks

Why the Kavalan Whisky Distillery in Yilan County, Taiwan, is a Must-Visit!
When planning our family trip to Taiwan,
one itinerary item I absolutely wanted to include was
a day tour to the Kavalan Whisky Distillery in Yilan County.
Kavalan, renowned as a world-class whisky brand,
boasts a deep, rich flavor in a relatively short aging period,
thanks to its unique maturation environment.
For any whisky enthusiast,
it's considered an absolute must-visit destination in Taiwan.
From **how to book a tour departing from Taipei**
(which I experienced on this trip) to
**my on-site review, tasting tips, and even gift shop purchase advice**,
I've meticulously detailed everything.

1. How to Get to Kavalan Whisky Distillery in Taiwan & Top Booking Tips
The Kavalan Whisky Distillery is located in
Yilan County, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Taipei.
📍 Location: No. 326, Section 2, Yuanshan Rd, Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, Taiwan

Honestly, it's not the easiest place to visit independently,
so after some thought on how to get there,
I **discovered a day tour program that included a visit to the Kavalan Whisky Distillery**
**and booked it right away**.
📌 How to Book 📌 - Use a tour booking platform with English support - Discounts available for advance bookings - Some programs offer options with an English-speaking guide 👉 Book Your Taiwan Kavalan Whisky Distillery Tour Click Here Kavalan Whisky Day Tour Information (with English-speaking guide) Kavalan Whisky Day Tour Information (no guide) -> I booked it here! |
Actually, I had booked a tour that only included
pick-up and drop-off, without a guide.
But luckily, our guide drove us personally
and even provided explanations!
Thanks to this, I got to hear interesting anecdotes for each point of interest,
along with brief explanations.
I was curious why the distillery was located here,
and through the guide's explanation,
I learned the simple fact that it's because it's the hometown
of the King Car Group chairman, who produces Kavalan, haha!
2. Inside the Kavalan Whisky Distillery: The Tour Course
Your Complete Guide
Facing the Kavalan logo and oak barrels,
the door at the far left is the entrance to the distillery tour.
📌 Main Attractions 📌
First Production Whisky Oak Barrel
Maturation Room
Single Malt & Peated Malt Area
Angel's Share Exhibit

Inside, it consists of oak barrel displays, fermentation rooms, stills, and exhibition halls, and English informational materials are also provided.
Upon opening the door, you'll find stairs leading to the second floor, along with an
oak barrel that held Kavalan's very first produced whisky
on display.

From this point on, a subtle aroma of fermented whisky
gently fills the air.
It felt like someone who isn't a strong drinker might even
get tipsy just from the smell (?).
On the wall to the right of the oak barrel,
photos of Kavalan's most famously representative whiskies
were displayed.

It was so helpful to have a Korean map explaining the Kavalan Whisky Distillery's interior,
making it easy to navigate and explore!

Ascending the stairs, you'll find an impressive display
of oak barrels, all proudly bearing the Kavalan mark.
Each barrel was meticulously numbered, detailing its production year
and batch number – a true testament to their craftsmanship!

Across from the barrels, a dedicated seating area for explanations
hinted at guided tours, promising deeper insights
into the whisky-making process!

Single malt and peated malt were also distinctly showcased,
inviting a closer look at their unique characteristics.

Even though I'm a complete whisky novice,
I couldn't quite recall all the details from the explanation,
so I had to consult ChatGPT again – haha!
Category | Single Malt (Single Malt) | Peated Malt (Peated Malt) |
Definition | Whisky made from 100% barley malt at a single distillery | Whisky made using malt smoked with peat smoke |
Key Characteristics | - Uses spirit from only one distillery- No other grains | - Dried with peat (turf) fuel- Imparts a smoky flavor |
Examples | Glenfiddich, Macallan | Laphroaig, Ardbeg |
Flavor Profile | Distinct distillery/regional characteristics | Strong smoky, maritime/iodine notes, divisive taste |
So, that's the theory! But when I actually got to experience them firsthand,
the Single Malt had this delightful, nutty aroma,
almost like barley tea.

What was truly fascinating was that the descriptions for each type of Kavalan whisky
were even provided in Korean (!) – a thoughtful touch for visitors!
Apparently, Kavalan's fame skyrocketed partly due to its feature in the movie <Decision to Leave>
and the buzz that a BTS member enjoys it. This might explain why an incredible number of Korean visitors
flock to the distillery!

You'll also find the yeast used to ferment the malt, a crucial step in the whisky-making magic!

And, of course, a fascinating array of oak barrels, each type meticulously displayed!
It's common practice for whisky-making to use oak barrels that previously held other spirits, rather than brand-new ones.
This ingenious method naturally infuses the whisky with incredible depths of flavor and aroma!

Kavalan primarily uses four distinct types of oak barrels,
and I must confess, the Port Cask definitely stole my heart – haha!
1. Ex-Bourbon Cask
Aged in bourbon oak barrels made from American white oak (Quercus alba),
imparting delightful notes of vanilla, coconut, and a smooth woody aroma.
2. Sherry Cask (Oloroso, Fino, and other sherry varieties)
Aged in oak barrels that previously matured Spanish sherry wine,
delivering rich notes of dried fruit, nuts, and a spicy complexity.
3. Port Cask (Port Barrique)
These barrels previously aged Portuguese Port wine,
and are used for the final stage of maturation.
They impart delightful notes of plum, blueberry, strawberry, and chocolate.
4. Wine Barrels (Vinho Barrique)
These are used American oak wine barrels
(from both red & white wines) used for aging.
They contribute complex fruit aromas, vanilla spice,
and a touch of herbs (like dill and lemongrass).

On one side, a small display played
a continuous video showcasing the Kavalan whisky production process.
It was fascinating to watch!

There was also an exhibit demonstrating how the color changes
depending on the type of whisky and its aging period.
Seriously, what's with that 48-month color?! So intriguing!

For spirits like whisky and brandy,
which are aged in oak barrels,
the volume is said to decrease slightly over time.
This phenomenon is known as the Angel’s Share.
Isn't that just such a romantic name?
However, thanks to the Angel's Share (or perhaps because of it!),
the longer whisky or brandy is aged,
the higher its price becomes... a little fact to keep in mind!

According to the explanation we heard at the distillery,
traditionally, Scotch whiskies label their age,
such as 12 years or 18 years of maturation,
on the bottle.
However, Taiwan's Kavalan
ages in a tropical climate (high temperature and high humidity),
which greatly accelerates the process. Just 3 to 5 years of aging there
can yield an effect equivalent to over 15 years of maturation elsewhere!
That's why they don't print the age statement on their labels,
and instead, they highlight cask information and quality in their marketing.
It's a smart approach!

Kavalan Whisky was actually established
quite recently, in 2008.
Considering its fame, I was surprised its history
is relatively short!

The sight of so many oak barrels lined up
was truly magnificent.

Typically, whisky oak barrels are stored horizontally,
so I was curious to see that most of the barrels at Kavalan Distillery
were standing upright.
It definitely made me wonder why!
It turns out, Taiwan experiences frequent earthquakes,
and this is a measure to prevent damage from them.
Ah, that makes so much sense!

There were rows upon rows of these upright oak barrels,
a truly impressive sight!
To further prevent earthquake damage, sturdy belts
were securely fastened around them.

In one corner of the space where you can view the oak barrels through a glass window,
there was a rather mysterious-looking door with the title 'Tasting Room' above it.
We were told that this room requires a separate advance reservation.
Apparently, this used to be a private tasting room
used exclusively by the chairman of the King Car Group.
However, as the distillery tour gained popularity,
they decided to open it to the public. How exciting!

After completing our distillery factory tour,
we headed outside, following the stairs,
and made our way to the area
where we could enjoy paid tastings and purchase whisky.
3. Kavalan Whisky Tasting Prices & Menu Recommendations
The Kavalan Whisky Distillery boasts tasting areas on both its 1st and 2nd floors,
and **you can savor 3 different types for 800 NT$**.
If you opt for a tasting on the 2nd floor,
you can pair your whisky with food at the adjacent **Mr Brown Cafe**.
So, if you have the time to relax and indulge,
I highly recommend the 2nd-floor tasting experience.
Since my family also planned to enjoy lunch here,
we chose the 2nd-floor tasting.
📌 Whisky Tasting Menu Recommendations for Beginners 📌
Sherry Family Series
Solist Series A La Carte (Fino, Oloroso, etc.)
When I asked a staff member,
they mentioned that Korean visitors typically gravitate towards
the Sherry Family Series.

📌 Kavalan Whisky Tasting Location Recommendations 📌
If you choose to taste on the 1st floor,
you'll receive a discount coupon of the same value
that can be used at the souvenir shop.
Therefore, **if you're planning to purchase souvenirs,
the 1st-floor tasting is your go-to**.
However, if you wish to savor your tasting experience
with lunch or dessert in a relaxed setting,
**the 2nd-floor tasting comes highly recommended**.

For an additional fee,
there was also an exciting program where you could blend your favorite Kavalan whiskies
to create your very own unique bottle.
However, we were a bit short on time, so we had to skip it... T_T

Once you ascend to the 2nd floor,
you'll discover this checkout counter.
It's here that you can select the whiskies you'd like to taste
and complete your payment.

For our tasting, we decided
on the Sherry Family Series.
Beyond the familiar Kavalan whiskies I usually encounter in Korea,
a wonderfully diverse selection was available here.

As soon as we completed our payment,
a staff member promptly hurried to that tasting room
to prepare our ordered whisky tasting menu.

The tasting room was truly beautifully decorated,
making it an absolute delight to explore.

It's right here that they expertly prepare
the whisky tasting set I ordered.
4. Mr Brown Brunch Cafe
Kavalan Whisky Distillery Gift Shop, 2nd Floor
After placing our order and getting our menu,
we headed straight to Mr. Brown, the brunch cafe right next door.

And here's the secret why you should do your Kavalan whisky tasting not on the first floor,
but right here on the second floor!
It's because you can order delicious food from this very brunch cafe
to perfectly pair with the whisky you'll be tasting.

Just a heads-up, they have this incredible
whisky pudding that you can only get here, and it's absolutely delicious,
so I highly recommend everyone in your group orders their own!
You really need one pudding per person.
The sweet and smooth pudding
has a subtle hint of whisky infused into it,
giving it a distinctly luxurious dessert feel.

Beyond just whisky,
they also had a really impressive selection of coffee beans and cool related merchandise.

We ended up ordering quite a few different items!
Besides a regular Americano,
they even had a whisky latte on the menu, so we absolutely had to try that too.
Oops! While I was busy collecting our tasting whiskies,
my family had already started digging in,
so this is sadly the only food photo I managed to snap ㅠㅠ

The tasting set
comes with 20ml of each type,
and thankfully, the name of each is clearly labeled on its coaster.
It features three exquisite selections from the Kavalan Solist series:
Fino, Oloroso, and the special Sherry Cask of the day.
The tasting glasses were so incredibly beautiful,
I seriously considered buying them right then and there!
While the aroma was absolutely divine,
I'll be honest, it was quite potent for a midday dram! 😉

That unique whisky latte we just *had* to try!
To be completely frank, if I hadn't already sampled the pure whisky,
I might have picked up more of the whisky aroma.
But after the tasting, it mostly just tasted like a delicious regular latte, haha!
I think I only *barely* caught a hint of whisky
near the very bottom of the cup...?
5. Your Insider Tips for the Kavalan Whisky Distillery Gift Shop!
KAVALAN DISTILLERY GIFT SHOP
After wrapping up our meal on the second floor,
and with our departure time looming, we made one last essential stop:
a wander through the gift shop on the first floor!
📌 Top Tips for Your Gift Shop Haul! 📌
- Enjoy tax exemption on purchases over NT$3,000
(Don't forget your passport!)
- Limited edition and mini-size products are super popular.
- For heavier items, it's smarter to buy them at larger supermarkets
in Taipei city.
Just a side note: the Kavalan Whisky Tour I booked
actually provided a coupon for an extra 10% discount!
But since I was only planning on picking up a bottle or two, I decided to pass on it.
However, if you're a big whisky enthusiast
and planning to stock up on a variety of whiskies
from the distillery gift shop,
combining that day tour coupon for 10% off
with the tax exemption benefits could really add up to a fantastic deal!

Right by the entrance, there's a stamp featuring the Kavalan distillery, so...
If you're doing a Taiwan stamp tour, keep this in mind!

Inside the gift shop,
a truly incredible variety of Kavalan whiskies
were displayed, sorted by type.

If you purchase NT$3,000 or more here,
you can also enjoy tax-free benefits, so
if you're planning to buy several bottles,
I highly recommend bringing your passport!
However, it can get quite heavy to carry around during your trip, so
unless you're buying a limited edition product,
I recommend purchasing from liquor shops like Carrefour or Jiapin Liquor (家品洋酒)
after returning to Taipei.

There are also mini-sized whiskies bottled in charming
distillery-shaped containers,

and even 'taster' style products
in stick-shaped bottles.
Prices varied by type, ranging from
NT$150 to NT$300.
Gift boxes needed to be purchased separately.
They looked perfect for small gifts.

The packaging was luxurious, making them delightful to look at.

There were also small oak barrel-shaped piggy banks,
which would make a lovely souvenir purchase.
Overall Review of the Kavalan Whisky Distillery Tour
Perfect for both family and couple trips to Taiwan!
The Kavalan Whisky Distillery is fantastic because you can enjoy it indoors even on rainy days,
making it a great place to visit regardless of the season or weather.

When planning your Taiwan trip,
if you're someone who **has a keen interest in whisky**,
and **loves hearing behind-the-scenes stories**,
I wholeheartedly recommend taking the
**Kavalan Whisky Distillery Tour**
