For those of you who have visited Taipei multiple times,

or if you're looking to pack your itinerary with unique hands-on experiences,

you're probably planning a side trip to nearby Yilan!

One absolute must-visit spot when you travel to Yilan, Taiwan

is definitely the Kavalan Whisky Distillery.

Not only can you learn about the whisky-making process, but you can also enjoy paid tastings

and purchase their famous whiskies, making it a true paradise

if you appreciate a good dram.

Today, I'll share how to book the Kavalan Whisky Tour,

how to get there, and my personal review!

First, let me introduce two ways to get

to the Kavalan Whisky Distillery.

📍 Option 1: Using public transportation.

Looking at the map above might seem super overwhelming,

but it basically involves taking a 4-digit intercity bus

from downtown Taipei straight to Yilan.

The biggest perk is that transportation is very cheap—under ~$6—but

the downside is that you have to transfer public transit multiple times,

which is quite a hassle and takes a lot of time.

📍 Option 2: Booking a guided bus tour.

The bus tour departs directly from downtown Taipei,

taking you straight to the Yilan region.

The key advantage is that you can explore various local attractions

along with the Kavalan Distillery all in one go.

Also, because you go straight by bus without any transfers,

it is much faster and saves a lot of time.

While the tour price is slightly higher

compared to taking public transport on your own,

as travelers, our time is much more precious than money!

Now, let's look at how to book the Kavalan Whisky Distillery tour.

You can absolutely just drop by the distillery for a quick tasting

or enjoy a self-guided walk around the grounds,

but a guided tour is also available if you book in advance.

Also, while the guided tour itself is free,

to enter the Kavalan Whisky Distillery,

there is currently an admission fee of

However, this ticket can be used as a discount voucher inside the distillery,

so you don't have to worry if you plan to do a tasting anyway!

if you are visiting via a day bus tour,

unfortunately, the Korean tour time might not align with your schedule.

Next up, here is my review of the whisky distillery visit and

guided tour experience.

Since I visited during the Christmas season,

both the inside and outside were filled with festive holiday vibes.

On the first floor of the main distillery building, there’s a whisky shop

where you can browse and buy an incredible variety of Kavalan whiskies.

They say there are many rare bottles here that are hard to find elsewhere,

so if you're a Kavalan fan, I highly recommend doing some shopping here!

Also, right next to the first-floor shop is a paid tasting room.

Here, you can sample about 10ml of any whisky you’d like to try.

While the tasting prices weren't exactly cheap,

it was definitely worth it for the chance to taste some premium, high-end whiskies.

If you're curious about a particular bottle before buying,

it’s the perfect opportunity to give it a taste first, right?

On the second floor, there's a cafeteria along with a beer and whisky tasting area,

where you can grab a light lunch.

The food wasn't as expensive as I expected,

and it actually tasted pretty good, so it's a great spot to have lunch beforehand.

(Just keep in mind, the food does take a little while to come out!)

After lunch, when it was time for my pre-booked guided tour,

I headed over to the starting point right on time.

Unfortunately, the timing didn't work out for the other languages, so I booked the Japanese tour.

About three Japanese travelers ended up joining the group.

During the distillery tour, we learned all about Kavalan’s history,

the whisky distillation process, and descriptions of their different varieties.

It's not every day you get to visit a whisky distillery,

so hearing all these detailed explanations made the experience feel so rewarding.

Even if you can't join a guided tour,

there are English descriptions throughout, so a self-guided tour is totally doable too!

There were also some hands-on activities, like touching the malted barley

and smelling the rich aroma of whisky seeping from the oak casks,

which made the whole experience super engaging.

Another fascinating part was seeing how the newly made whisky base

deepens in color over time.

From starting completely clear to gradually drawing out rich colors,

and seeing how the intensity of the shade varies over time

depending on the type of cask base used—it was truly amazing to witness.

After exploring the old kilns once used in the distillery

and visiting the whisky aging warehouse,

our guided tour officially came to an end.

While you can easily enjoy a self-guided tour

since most of the basic information is displayed on signs,

having a guide explain everything in person made

the entire experience so much more vivid and engaging!
