Is Juknokwon Worth Visiting in the Rain?
A Moody Rainy Day Adventure in Damyang
Recently, we traveled to Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, for a close friend's wedding. Since we had some extra time before the ceremony, we decided to make a quick trip to the famous Juknokwon Bamboo Forest in nearby Damyang. It turned out to be the perfect, relaxing morning walk, and we highly recommend adding it to your South Korea itinerary! π²
On the day of our visit, a steady drizzle was falling. If you are wondering, "Is Juknokwon still worth it on a rainy, misty day?" or "Will it be too gloomy to enjoy?", this review is for you. Here is what it is actually like to explore this green oasis in wet weather.
Admission Fees and Parking

As you can see, the weather was incredibly overcast and foggy when we arrived. But don't let the moody sky fool youβthe forest was fully open and incredibly atmospheric!
Admission Prices:
Adults: ~$2 (Individual) / ~$1 (Group)
Teens & Youth: ~$1
Children (Elementary): ~$1
With tickets costing just ~$4 total for the two of us, it is an incredibly budget-friendly destination. The main parking lot is located directly in front of the entrance, and it is completely free to park, with plenty of spaces available even on the weekend.
As soon as you step inside, you are greeted by beautifully maintained traditional Hanok buildings and spacious courtyards.
The Wishing Toad
Legend says that touching this cute little toad brings wealth and good fortune. Of course, we had to give it a quick rub for some good luck!
The park is much larger than we expected. Before you even enter the dense bamboo forest, there are plenty of lovely spots to stroll through and take in the scenery.
The grounds are dotted with quiet ponds, gentle fountains, and rest areas, making it an incredibly peaceful place to unwind. β²οΈ
Because the main path near the front gate looked a bit slick in the rain, we decided to take a slightly higher, alternative entrance to access the forest trail.
(If you're wearing sturdy sneakers, though, you'll be completely fine on any route!)
Chuwoldang: The Hanok Cafe
Along the way, you'll come across a gorgeous Hanok-style cafe called Chuwoldang. The rainy weather actually enhanced its charm, making it a cozy spot where many visitors stopped to rest, sip tea, and watch the rain fall over the courtyard. ππ»
Walking Through the Rainy Bamboo Canopy
The reason Juknokwon is one of the best places to visit on a rainy day in Korea is the dense bamboo canopy. The towering stalks grow so closely together that they act as a natural umbrella, blocking much of the drizzle. This allows you to enjoy a peaceful, atmospheric walk even in wet weather.
Since we were heading straight to a wedding afterward, we were dressed up in formal wear. The dirt paths were definitely damp and a bit muddy, so we had to tread carefully.
However, we weren't the only ones! We saw plenty of people in skirts and dress shoes, likely visiting as part of a date or a weekend getaway. If you want to explore the deeper trails, though, we highly recommend wearing comfortable sneakers.
As you wander deeper into the forest, you can spot fresh, young bamboo shoots popping up through the earth.
Unfortunately, we did see some spots where visitors had carved their names into the bamboo stalks. While it's natural to want to leave a mark of your travels, it damages the plants and ruins the pristine natural beauty of the forest. Let's make sure to practice Leave No Trace principles when we travel!
On our way back, we passed several scenic viewing decks, traditional pavilions, and cute photo zones. Even in the rain, the forest felt incredibly alive and vibrant.
While a heavy downpour might make walking difficult, a gentle drizzle only adds to the magic of Juknokwon Bamboo Forest. βοΈ
If you are looking for a peaceful nature escape, a romantic date spot, or a quiet walk with family in Jeollanam-do, Juknokwon is a must-visit destination.
