When you're booking accommodation in Japanese cities like Tokyo or Osaka, always make sure to check the room size.

Booking platforms usually list the square footage for each room type. For example, a double room near Shinjuku Station might be a mere 161 sq ft and cost around ~$179 per night.

This means that if you want both a good location AND a spacious room, you'll generally have to pay a hefty price.

Considering value, reasonable distance from downtown, and enough space to comfortably open a suitcase, I chose to introduce you to the Tokyo hotel that ticked all three boxes:

2. JR East Hotel Mets Mejiro Location

This hotel is conveniently located right in front of the ticket gates at Mejiro Station on the JR Yamanote Line, just a 1-minute walk away.

The JR Yamanote Line is a circular route around Tokyo, connecting you directly to major hubs like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Tokyo Station. (Just load up your Suica card and you're good to go!)

Given these travel times, I never felt that the hotel was too far from the city's vibrant downtown areas.

Plus, because it's a little removed from the main hustle and bustle, it's wonderfully quiet at night, making it perfect for anyone seeking a tranquil Tokyo accommodation.

Mejiro has a relatively calm, residential and university town vibe, so it's especially recommended for travelers who want to avoid the noise of busy districts while still having quick access to them!

3. The Single Room Experience

I stayed in a single room, which was 172 sq ft. It was ideal for solo travelers or even two people.

While the numbers might not seem like a huge difference, even an extra 11 sq ft can make a noticeable impact. It’s always more comfortable to opt for a slightly larger room if possible.

I traveled with my mother, and while twin beds would have been even better, the room was perfectly cozy for our three-night stay.

Even with my 28-inch suitcase fully open next to the bed, there was still plenty of room for two people to move around without any issues.

The room featured a bed, bathroom, desk, TV, and a wardrobe – a simple, no-frills setup with everything you need.

The desk area, complete with cups and a kettle, made it easy to enjoy late-night snacks we bought.

Amenities are available in the lobby, and you can pick up whatever you need to take to your room.

They had everything from body wash, shampoo, and bath salts to toothbrushes, razors, cleansing foam, and cleansing oil. You really don't need to bring any toiletries of your own!

The bathroom was a typical Japanese hotel setup with a bathtub, and I appreciated how well-maintained and clean it was.

The room also had a multi-charger that supported all charging types, which was incredibly convenient.

4. Family-Friendly Rooms? Absolutely!

Of course, JR East Hotel Mets Mejiro offers rooms suitable for families as well.

• For 1-2 people

Single rooms or Corner Double rooms ranging from 172-183 sq ft.

• For 3-4 people

Twin rooms (226 sq ft), Deluxe Twin rooms (344 sq ft), or Universal rooms (280 sq ft).

A great perk here is that even for single rooms, one preschool-aged child can stay for free.

5. Convenient Amenities

There's a Starbucks located right on the first floor of the hotel.

As someone who loves to try local menu items when traveling, it was perfect to grab a coffee before heading out and hopping straight onto the subway.

Breakfast at JR East Hotel Mets Mejiro is also served at this Starbucks. We didn't opt for the hotel breakfast package, choosing instead to grab something quick and easy there.

The lobby also features a coffee machine and a separate ice machine, which we used as needed.

We'd grab desserts from Starbucks and get our coffee from the machine in the lobby.

6. Final Thoughts

If you dislike the crowded, bustling downtown areas

and want a great value stay in Tokyo,

then you should definitely look for accommodation along the JR Yamanote Line.

This hotel, located right in front of the station on that line, offers excellent accessibility to downtown, and there are plenty of fantastic restaurants nearby. It's a superb choice!

Especially since spacious family rooms are limited in Tokyo, it’s a good idea to book as soon as your travel dates are set.
