While I often explore the best eateries in Gurae-dong, I also have a keen eye for culinary delights in Yanggok. One day, a striking signboard with the bold name 'Jockchija' caught my attention in the Yanggok food alley. I wondered what kind of deliciousness they served, and this trip finally gave me the chance to find out!
Here's a peek inside Jockchija! On the day I visited, there was a large group, so I couldn't get the perfect shot, but it's clear this is a wonderful place for families, friends, or even larger gatherings.
Menu
Looking at the menu at Jockchija, a top Jokbal spot in Yanggok, I was torn about what to order. My eyes immediately went to the set menus. The Jockchija Set includes Jokbal (braised pig's trotters) + Chicken + Kimchi Makguksu (buckwheat noodles) + Ssam (wrap) set. The Chibossam Set features Bossam (boiled pork belly) + Chicken + Kimchi Makguksu + Ssam set. And the Jokbossam Set offers Jokbal + Bossam + Kimchi Makguksu + Ssam set. Since it's named after the restaurant, I decided to go with the Jockchija Set!
As soon as I ordered, they started setting our table. I loved that the water came in a vintage Del Monte orange juice bottle – such a fun, nostalgic touch! Even before the main dishes arrived, this little detail got me excited.
They also served a fresh cabbage salad, which I really appreciated.
Fresh lettuce for wrapping the jokbal was also provided. What makes Jockchija unique is that they also serve pickled radish wraps, or 'mu-ssam,' alongside the traditional greens. I found it quite interesting as it's not a common pairing with jokbal, but I quickly understood why! The mu-ssam and jokbal go incredibly well together. My dad couldn't get enough of them!
Of course, you can't have jokbal without classic kimchi! And since the Jockchija set includes chicken, they also provided a variety of dipping sauces, making the already delicious chicken even more enjoyable.
Jokbal + Chicken
Finally, our main dishes arrived – the chicken and jokbal! The visual presentation was absolutely stunning.
The jokbal glistened with a beautiful sheen! 🧡 It was incredibly tender and flavorful, just as it looked.
Even better when wrapped in a fresh leaf! I didn't manage to snap a photo of it, but trust me, wrapping the jokbal in those mu-ssam is an absolute game-changer! Highly recommended!
And those large, crispy fried pieces in the photo? That's the chicken!
You can easily cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces using the tongs and scissors provided at your table.
I thought the jokbal was amazing, but wow... I came expecting jokbal to be the star, but while the jokbal is delicious, the chicken here is truly on another level! It's so good, it might even steal the show. 🧡
Makguksu
The Jockchija set also came with a generous serving of Makguksu! It was packed with fresh vegetables, a substantial portion, and incredibly delicious.
It truly makes for the perfect accompaniment to drinks, and my dad certainly enjoyed his libations! I stuck to soft drinks, but...
Another great thing about Jockchija is their extensive drink menu. Beyond the usual sodas like Coke, Sprite, and Fanta, they offer a wide array of beverages, making it fun to pick your favorite.
They also have a diverse selection of appetizers. If I hadn't been so full, I would have definitely tried their pineapple sherbet or takoyaki!
It was a completely satisfying meal.
