Ubud Downtown's Best Value Hotel
Jati Cottage
If you're planning to explore the vibrant streets of Ubud, opting for a centrally located hotel is often more convenient than a secluded jungle resort.
While Jati Cottage might not offer that deep jungle ambiance, it absolutely brims with that classic Ubud charm and offers incredible value. Let's dive into my review of this fantastic budget-friendly hotel.

1. Jati Cottage: Perfectly Located in Downtown Ubud

Temple next to Ubud Palace
Ubud is renowned for its luxurious resorts nestled amidst lush, green nature.
However, one drawback of these high-end retreats is that they often aren't within walking distance of the bustling town center.
Of course, if your main goal is a relaxing 'staycation' at the resort, you might not even have time to venture into town!
For my first trip to Ubud, with a somewhat short itinerary, I really wanted to explore the town, so a hotel with easy walking access was a must. Jati Cottage fit the bill perfectly. It's about a 0.8-mile (18-minute) walk to Ubud Palace, a 0.6-mile (12-minute) walk to the Monkey Forest, and the famous Yoga Barn is practically next door.
The area around Ubud Palace is where you'll find the Ubud Market and Starbucks, places many travelers visit at least once.
Honestly, Ubud isn't just about hitting the main attractions; it's truly a destination for discovering charming restaurants and cafes tucked away in the town's winding alleyways.
Being right in the heart of town is key, and those exact walking distances aren't the most critical factor.
Anyway, I chose Jati Cottage because of its glowing reviews and fantastic price. And let me tell you, there's a good reason why it's so highly rated!
2. Ubud Charm on a Budget

After a day trip from Kuta that included a taxi tour of Tegalalang, we arrived at the hotel quite late.
The staff promptly helped us with our luggage, and even in the dim light, I was very impressed with the room's condition.

Our room even had a private terrace with a lovely view.
While it's not the dense, wild jungle scenery you might find at more secluded resorts, the abundance of trees still provided plenty of that signature Ubud atmosphere.

The next morning, I snapped a photo of the stairs leading up to our room in the daylight.
This might be a slight downside for some: the hotel is a low-rise building (only two floors), so there's no elevator. If you're assigned a second-floor room, you'll be using the stairs. It's not particularly strenuous, but it can be a bit tricky with heavy luggage (though the staff are wonderful and handle all the bags).

The hotel's landscaping is truly beautiful, isn't it? It perfectly evokes that Southeast Asian vibe, complete with a charming, albeit small, swimming pool.
I didn't take many photos, but I highly recommend checking out more detailed pictures on various booking platforms to get a full sense of the place.

Hotel prices, of course, vary wildly depending on the season, but Jati Cottage generally offers rooms in the ~$64 range.
When I searched, I even found rates as low as ~$51 per night during the off-season!
*Lowest prices typically found from October onwards
I paid just over ~$64 for my stay, so knowing there are even cheaper times makes it an even better deal!
Since it's a popular spot, booking in advance is usually the best way to secure the lowest rates.
As of late July 2026, a quick search for a September stay shows prices like:
~$92 | |
~$102 |
These prices are typical through the summer, but from October to December, you can find rates even lower than ~$64 – a fantastic deal!
I also enjoyed breakfast at the hotel, so I'll share my thoughts on that below.
3. Delicious & Fresh Breakfast!

Breakfast isn't a buffet; instead, you order from a menu. The options aren't extensive, but they always include fresh fruit.
Being in Indonesia, I went for the Mie Goreng, fruit, and a salad – and the Mie Goreng was absolutely delicious!
The open-air dining area is located on the ground floor, offering a lovely, breezy start to the day.

Since I stayed for two nights, I also had breakfast on the second day. We ordered Mie Goreng and Nasi Goreng, and again, fruit and a drink were included for each person.
This time, instead of going to the dining area, we decided to enjoy breakfast on our room's private terrace!

While the table setup might not be as formal as in the restaurant, there's something wonderful about being able to eat in your pajamas right after waking up, isn't there?! I absolutely loved having breakfast delivered to our room.
On my next trip, I'd love to experience one of Ubud's luxurious jungle resorts, but if I find myself needing a downtown stay again, I wouldn't hesitate to book Jati Cottage. The staff were friendly, breakfast was delicious, and the room condition was excellent.
One thing to note: given Ubud's natural environment, you might encounter geckos or insects. However, the beds are equipped with canopies or mosquito nets, so you can sleep soundly protected. It didn't bother me, but if you're particularly sensitive to bugs, I'm not sure which Ubud hotel would be completely free of them.....

Wishing you all a wonderful trip to Bali!
