Japan eSIM Guide: Your Key to Easy Tokyo Travel in 2026

Having tried both physical SIM cards and eSIMs for my trips to Japan, I can confidently say that nothing beats the convenience of an eSIM. The ability to simply activate it without needing to physically swap out cards is a game-changer. Plus, if you need to receive SMS verification codes or calls on your primary number, an eSIM lets you keep your original SIM active simultaneously, eliminating the hassle of constantly switching back and forth.

While many travelers are now familiar with the perks of eSIMs, for those who haven't yet made the switch, I've put together a simple guide on how to use an eSIM for your Japan trip. Although these steps apply universally, I've focused on Tokyo travel for my examples, as it's a popular starting point for many.

How to Use Your eSIM

There are several providers out there, but I personally used Airalo. However, the basic process is the same across the board, so you can easily book your eSIM through platforms like Klook or KKday when you're making other tour reservations.

First, select your destination country (Japan, in this case) and choose the data package that suits your needs. Options typically range from 1GB to 2GB, 5GB, or even 10GB.

​Once you've made your selection, a QR code will appear. Simply scan this code, and you're pretty much done with the Japan eSIM setup!

Alternatively, if scanning isn't convenient (for instance, if you're doing everything on one phone and don't have a second device or PC screen), you can tap 'Enter Activation Code' and paste the provided code. While scanning is often easier, this second method is great for single-device setup. Once your Japan eSIM is added to your device, you can activate it as soon as you land at the airport in Tokyo.

In your phone's SIM Manager settings, simply toggle the eSIM on. You can keep your existing SIM active simultaneously, but be aware that running both can drain your battery faster. I usually only switch on my primary SIM when I specifically need it.

My Experience with Japan eSIMs

In some countries, like Vietnam, I tend to opt for a local physical SIM because I occasionally need local call functionality, for example, to book a spa appointment. However, in Japan, booking anything over the phone often requires Japanese language skills I don't possess, so local calls aren't typically a necessity for me. This means a data-only eSIM is perfectly sufficient for navigating, communicating online, and staying connected.
