Ishigaki 4-Day Itinerary 2026: Snorkeling, Rental Cars & Hidden Gems
Planning a trip to Ishigaki? Dive into our 4-day itinerary for 2026, covering essential tips for rental cars, top snorkeling spots, and smart accommodation choices to explore this stunning Japanese island.

With more direct flights making it easily accessible, Ishigaki has become a sought-after destination, offering crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life within easy reach.
I recently enjoyed a fantastic 4-day, 3-night trip, experiencing incredible snorkeling in its pristine waters and even scuba diving with majestic manta rays. It was an absolutely satisfying getaway!
Here’s a detailed breakdown of my first day on Ishigaki, including picking up our rental car, checking into our accommodation, and an unforgettable snorkeling adventure.
Ishigaki 4-Day Itinerary: Rental Car, Snorkeling & Accommodation Guide
1️⃣ Arrival & Rental Car Pick-up
2️⃣ Lunch: Delicious Ramen
3️⃣ Accommodation Check-in
4️⃣ Snorkeling at Yonehara Beach
5️⃣ Evening Grocery Run: San-A Mart
1. Arrival & Rental Car Pick-up

Many travelers find Ishigaki accessible via direct flights from major hubs. For example, flights often depart in the morning and return around 1:00 PM, making a 4-day, 3-night itinerary a popular choice for maximizing your time.

With an early arrival, usually by noon, you'll clear immigration and have a significant portion of your afternoon free to explore Ishigaki.

After landing, we first withdrew some Japanese Yen from an ATM before heading straight to pick up our rental car.
If you have an international travel card, you can often withdraw cash from ATMs like the one on the left without incurring extra fees.

When comparing rental car prices, we found that off-airport companies were significantly more affordable than those located directly inside the airport. We opted for an external provider.
They offered a convenient shuttle bus service to their office, which wasn't far from the airport, making the process hassle-free.
Having a rental car truly enhanced our trip. It made visiting Yonehara Beach, shopping at the supermarket, and exploring other attractions like Don Quijote much quicker than relying on public transportation. If you plan to see multiple spots, a rental car is highly recommended!

2. Lunch: Delicious Ramen
📍 はなれラーメン居酒屋 鎌倉
61-1 Hirae, Ishigaki, Okinawa 907-0003 Japan
After picking up our rental car, we drove towards the city center for lunch at Hanare Ramen.
It had a decent Google rating of 4.4, but what truly impressed us, especially with a rental car, was the convenience of its dedicated parking lot.

We ordered the Pollock Roe Seafood Ramen and Garlic Oil Ramen, and both were incredibly satisfying.
The Pollock Roe Seafood Ramen, in particular, had a wonderfully spicy broth that perfectly suited my palate.
Just a heads-up: the standard seasoning can be a bit salty, so if you prefer lighter flavors, it might be worth asking if they can adjust the saltiness when you order.
3. Accommodation Check-in

Since scuba diving was the main purpose of our trip, we prioritized finding accommodation with excellent accessibility to diving shops.
Our chosen spot was about a 15-minute walk from the Ishigaki Public Market and conveniently located for reaching Misakicho and the port, which are popular departure points for island tours.

We stayed in an apartment-style accommodation equipped with a kitchen and a washing machine.
Given that we were in the water daily and the weather was quite warm, leading to a lot of sweating, having a washing machine and a small balcony to quickly dry our clothes was incredibly convenient. It was a comfortable and spacious stay throughout our 4-day, 3-night trip.

While staying directly near the Public Market might be most convenient for sightseeing, we noticed a significant price difference for accommodation just a little further from the city center.
For instance, our accommodation (marked in yellow on the map) was about a 15-minute walk from the central area (marked in pink), and that short distance made a considerable difference in terms of value for money.
It was actually quieter and more peaceful at night, making it ideal for relaxing. If you don't mind a 10-15 minute stroll to Misakicho and the Public Market, expanding your search to include these slightly-off-center areas is a great way to find more affordable yet comfortable stays.

4. Snorkeling at Yonehara Beach
📍 Yonehara Beach
644 Fukai, Ishigaki, Okinawa 907-0451 Japan

After checking into our apartment and changing, we headed to Yonehara Beach for our main activity of the day: snorkeling!
It's about a 30-minute drive from the city center, and having a rental car definitely made the journey much more convenient.
Hauling snorkeling gear and other beach essentials on public transport would have been quite a challenge.

Despite its reputation as a fantastic snorkeling spot, it was surprisingly unfrequented, and the water was incredibly clear and pristine.

Ishigaki is so far south that on clear days, you can almost see Taiwan! This southern latitude means the marine life is distinctly different and much more colorful than what you'd find in mainland Japan.

The water depth was perfect for snorkeling, and the temperature was so pleasant that even in just a bikini, I didn't feel cold at all.
If you're planning to snorkel in Ishigaki, Yonehara Beach is a definite must-visit!
5. Evening Grocery Run: San-A Mart
📍 San-A Ishigaki City
301ー1 Maezato, Ishigaki, Okinawa 907-0002 Japan

After an exhilarating day of swimming, we skipped a restaurant dinner and instead stocked up on groceries at San-A Mart.
The food section is impressively large, offering a vast array of options from fresh sushi and sashimi to various deli items like tonkatsu, along with a great selection of beers and snacks.
They also have a wide range of candies and instant noodles, making it a great spot to pick up unique souvenirs.

I'd always heard the tip to try supermarket food in Japan, not just convenience stores, and Ishigaki's San-A Mart proved that the quality of their packaged meals is indeed excellent.
We laid out all our selections back at the apartment, and it made for a perfectly satisfying dinner without needing to go out. The rental car was a huge plus here, allowing us to buy plenty and easily transport it all back to our accommodation.
