Japan's southernmost island, **Ishigaki Island**, boasts a **subtropical climate**,
with **emerald, crystal-clear waters**.
It's famous for various marine activities like snorkeling and kayaking,
and it's also a world-renowned **habitat for manta rays**,
making it a pilgrimage site for many scuba divers.
My goal for this Ishigaki, Japan trip was scuba diving,
and among the many dive shops, I chose Marinechu, where **communication in Korean is possible**.
I've compiled information on Marinechu, an Ishigaki dive shop, covering **booking methods, prices, location,**

1. Ishigaki Scuba Diving: Manta Rays
Ishigaki, Japan, provides an ideal environment for manta rays to thrive,
thanks to its complex currents that bring **abundant plankton**, create **habitats for various cleaner fish**,
and offer **reduced threats from predators** due to its well-developed reef systems.
Manta rays are a type of ray,
and their **size typically ranges from 3 to 5 meters**.
In some cases, they can grow up to **7 meters**, so encountering one underwater is truly awe-inspiring.
They are considered **highly intelligent** among fish due to their relatively large brains,
and their **tail stinger has atrophied**,
meaning they are not dangerous.
In Ishigaki, Japan, you can spot manta rays year-round, but the **best time is from August to October**.

2. How to Book
Marinechu, the dive shop I used for my Ishigaki, Japan trip,
has an **owner and staff who can communicate in Korean**.
I joined this diving tour through the Aos diving club,
so there were other experienced divers with me. However,
since safety is paramount in scuba diving, it was really convenient
that the owner and staff, who are well-versed in local conditions,
could explain **precautions and characteristics of each dive site in Korean**.

As listed above, there are courses for obtaining certifications,
as well as diving courses designed for tourists.
Since we already had all our certifications,
we enjoyed **fun dives**.
During our 3-night, 4-day Ishigaki trip,
we went diving a total of 6 times over 2 days.

The cost varies depending on the number of people,
your certifications, and the desired number of dives,
so for accurate pricing, I recommend sending a direct message to Marinechu.
4. Diving Review
What I loved about Marinechu, the diving shop in Ishigaki, Japan,
is its convenient location not too far from the city center.
From Taketomi's Apartment, which was our accommodation,
you only need to walk about 5 minutes to find the Marinechu boat docked.

The process was simple: we changed into our wetsuits on the boat located to the left in the picture,
grabbed our necessary equipment, then moved to the adjacent boat,
and headed out to sea for our dives.
On the first day, in addition to the owner and Marinechu staff,
there were 7 members from our Aos group for scuba diving,
and 2 people on a snorkeling tour, making a total of 9 passengers.
The boat was well-equipped with lukewarm tea to quench our thirst,
warm water for rinsing our faces after diving,
and even a restroom onboard, which was incredibly convenient.
When you go diving in various places, you sometimes encounter boats without restrooms,
so having a boat with one really makes you appreciate it!
For lunch, a local Ishigaki bento company provided
a variety of bento boxes.
You could choose what suited your taste, like Karaage or stir-fried meat.
Thanks to using Marinechu Dive Shop,
we got to experience clean, warm ocean waters, which are hard to find in Korea,
and see a wide variety of marine life.
Plus, communication was as easy as speaking Korean,
making it feel like it combined the best aspects of both domestic and international dive tours.
We visited the Manta Point once a day,
meaning twice out of our 6 dives,
and we saw mantas every single time – absolute satisfaction!!
I had heard they were big, but seeing them in person,
they were so huge they could block out the sunlight when they swam over our heads.
The mantas were swimming back and forth, making it hard to tell if it was the same one we saw moments ago,
but apparently, you can distinguish them by the spots and patterns on their undersides.
You can actually tell who's who!
Besides mantas, we saw many sea turtles,
and they even helped us find creatures I wouldn't have easily spotted myself, like nudibranchs, moray eels, and electric clams!
This was the second Ishigaki diving tour for the Aos Scuba Diving Club,
and while I couldn't join the first one,
my friends who went last year during peak manta season missed out on cuttlefish.
But we went during cuttlefish spawning season,
so we got to see all of Ishigaki's famous marine life, including cuttlefish and mantas!!
There were so many other colorful fish, too,
and the water was incredibly clear, making it a truly wonderful dive.

Diving is definitely more fun with a group,
so you can chat later about the marine life you saw,
and compare it to previous dives.
