Unlock the best of Ishigaki with a rental car! Find out how to save on costs, compare top booking sites, and get essential tips for your 2026 trip.
While preparing for my Ishigaki trip, one thing I deliberated on quite a bit was car rental.
While you can reach the main tourist spots by bus, renting a car drastically cuts down on travel time. Plus, when you're heading to the beach with all your water gear, or trying to transport all your shopping from the supermarket and Don Quijote, a rental car just makes sense.
When renting in Ishigaki, I found that using rental companies located outside the airport could save a significant amount on costs, compared to those inside.
I've compiled everything from Ishigaki car rental costs and price comparisons across different sites, to real-life usage reviews, vehicle return procedures, and nearby gas stations around the airport.

1. Ishigaki Car Rental Costs

Our Ishigaki trip was a 3-night, 4-day itinerary, and since there were five of us going on a scuba diving tour, we had a lot of luggage, so we opted for a larger SUV.
I also looked up rental car prices for a similar number of days for a party of two. Considering the need to fit large suitcases and prioritize safety, I searched for compact cars, slightly larger than kei cars.

I checked the rental costs for a **Honda Fit** with minimum insurance options on popular overseas rental sites like **Klook, Trip.com, and Zzimcar**, and here's what I found:
Klook | Trip.com | |
~$117 | ~$159 | |
Even for cars in the same class, _Klook was definitely more affordable_.
Of course, a lower price can sometimes mean less favorable insurance terms, but after checking, the minimum coverage options for Klook and Trip.com weren't significantly different.

Another great thing about Klook compared to other sites was that it _clearly marked companies offering Korean language service_ and allowed for _side-by-side price comparisons from different providers_ for the same vehicle.
This comparison revealed that even for the same car, there could be nearly a threefold difference in rental costs between companies located inside the airport and those outside.

I ended up using a company located **outside the airport**, and the **shuttle bus stop** wasn't far. The shuttle ride to the rental office only took a few minutes, so it wasn't a major hassle at all.
If I can save so much on rental costs for just a short transfer, I'd definitely choose an off-airport company again next time.

2. Ishigaki Rental Review

We rented our car from **Budget rental company**.
Since the company was located outside the airport, we took a shuttle bus after arrival. The travel time wasn't long, and the process of picking up the car at the airport felt much simpler than expected.

The minivan could fit _our group of five, plus another team_, and there was plenty of trunk space, so we could load all our suitcases at once.

There were several guidance notices in the car seat pockets, but they were all in Japanese, so I couldn't understand them. I just took photos just in case.

After completing the car rental process and checking our vehicle's condition, we loaded our luggage and headed towards Misakicho, where our accommodation was.

The true convenience of having a rental car on our Ishigaki trip hit me on the first day, when we went to Yonehara Beach.
While public transport would take about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get from near Misakicho (where our accommodation was) to Yonehara Beach, the drive only took us around 30 minutes.
Imagine lugging all that snorkeling gear and beach essentials while waiting for a bus – it would have been quite an energy drain!

In the evening, we also swung by a supermarket to grab some groceries.
We loaded up on all sorts of goodies – sushi, sashimi, snacks, and drinks – and it was incredibly convenient to just stash everything in the trunk and drive straight back to our place.

Ishigaki only has one Don Quijote, and from Misakicho, you'd typically need to take a bus to get there.
You know how it is at Don Quijote – you go in for souvenirs and come out with a mountain of stuff! Having a rental car made it a breeze to transport all those heavy bags, and with a huge parking lot, parking stress was simply non-existent.
While a rental car isn't strictly essential if you're only planning to explore Ishigaki's city center, if your itinerary includes several outlying attractions like Yonehara Beach, the difference in travel time and physical energy saved is truly substantial.
Especially for a short trip, say 3 nights and 4 days, I felt the rental was totally worth it just for the sheer benefit of cutting down on public transport waiting times.
3. Returning the Car & Refueling
Just like when we picked it up, we returned the rental car with a full tank of gas.
On our way to the airport, we stopped at the ENEOS gas station closest to the airport to refuel, then headed to the Budget office, our Ishigaki car rental company.
📍 ENEOS Self-Service Ishigaki Airport SS / Ishigaki SS Group Co., Ltd.
222-34 Moriyama, Ishigaki, Okinawa 907-0244 Japan
If you cut your return time too close, you might find yourself rushing to find a gas station or get the car inspected, potentially stressing about your flight. It's always a good idea to factor in a little extra buffer time before your estimated airport arrival.

When I first rented a car abroad, I admit I was a bit nervous that the pick-up and drop-off process might be complicated. But it actually wrapped up much faster than I anticipated!
After returning the car, we took the rental company's shuttle bus back to Ishigaki Airport Terminal.
When I heard the rental company was located outside the airport, I initially worried it might be too far. However, with their convenient shuttle service for both pick-up and drop-off, it really wasn't an issue at all.
When picking your Ishigaki rental car, I highly recommend looking beyond just proximity to the airport. Make sure to compare vehicle prices, insurance terms, and shuttle availability all together!
Rent an Ishigaki Car for Less on Klook

For the same Honda Fit with a minimum coverage option, Klook is cheaper at approximately ~$117, while Trip.com and Zimcar are around ~$159. By using an off-airport agency, you can save nearly three times the rental cost compared to on-airport agencies.
It takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to Yonehara Beach from near Misakicho, where your accommodation is located, by public transportation. If you use a rental car, you can arrive in about 30 minutes, significantly reducing travel time.
We rented a car from Budget. Before returning it, we stopped at ENEOS セルフ石垣空港SS, which is the closest gas station to the airport, for refueling. This gas station is located at 222-34 Moriyama, Ishigaki, Okinawa 907-0244 Japan.
Klook conveniently highlights agencies that offer Korean language services. Additionally, if the same vehicle is offered by multiple agencies, Klook allows you to compare prices from different agencies all at once.
