🍜 Harajuku's Best Ramen for Your Tokyo Trip

Ichiran Ramen is perfect for travelers who are:

Every time I plan a trip to Japan, I always tell myself, "This time, I *will* eat Ichiran Ramen!" But somehow, when I'm actually there, whether it's Tokyo, Osaka, or Fukuoka, Ichiran always feels so accessible that I often get sidetracked by other delicious options, especially when I'm super hungry. It's a ramen spot I love but often miss out on (I even ended up at an izakaya in Osaka instead!).

However, during my most recent Tokyo trip, I made a point not to wander off! I headed straight for the Ichiran Ramen Harajuku branch, and I have to say, the building itself is quite unique, almost like a cuckoo clock with a bird popping out of the second floor!

You'll find Ichiran Ramen on the second floor, and yes, there was a wait... 😂 It seems no matter which of Tokyo's many branches I visit, there's always a line. I even queued up at the Ichiran near JR Ueno Station before!

Ordering is done via a convenient self-service kiosk. Since Ichiran Ramen is incredibly popular with international visitors, I was pleased to find that the kiosk offered multiple language options, including English.

This made choosing my meal incredibly easy! Payment was also flexible, with both cash and card options available.

Once you've made your selections at the kiosk, you'll receive a ticket. Hold onto this, as you'll hand it over to a staff member along with your customization sheet.

The first few times I ate at Ichiran, I followed the popular recommendations for customization. But after a few visits, I realized I didn't need to be so strict! Now, I just choose based on my mood that day. Honestly, for me, the toppings like chashu are more important than the subtle adjustments!

The famous red secret sauce allows you to adjust the spice level. Even as someone who's not great with spicy food, I found that selecting levels 4-5 wasn't overly spicy at all.

I can't recall if they had this system before, but this time, I noticed a display that shows available seats. The staff uses this to guide you to your spot.

Once inside, you'll find hooks for your coats next to your seat. With the cooler weather approaching, it's perfect for hanging up your outerwear while you enjoy your meal.

The individual dining booths are quite familiar by now, offering a private space. You'll find tissues on the wall, extra order sheets and pens, chopsticks, and a water cup at each spot.

Last time in Ueno, I went all out with toppings, so this time I decided to keep it simple.

I only added an egg, which made my Ichiran ramen look a bit sparse this time around.

But who cares when you've got a refreshing draft beer to go with it? Pure bliss! The draft beer was incredibly cold and satisfying.

Ichiran Ramen Souvenirs

Every time I see the Ichiran Ramen souvenir kit (or meal kit?), I always wonder if it truly captures the authentic Ichiran flavor at home. I used to hesitate, always debating whether to buy it or not. Eventually, my sibling just bought it for me!

And guess what? When I cooked it at home, it *really* tasted like Ichiran Ramen! I was genuinely surprised!

However, there are absolutely no toppings included. It's just the noodles and the tonkotsu broth. So, if you want to recreate the full Ichiran experience from your Japan trip, I highly recommend preparing various toppings to enjoy with it.
