Kyoto Travel: My Hozu River Boat Ride Experience in Arashiyama
While planning my trip to Kyoto,
there was one bucket-list activity in Arashiyama
I absolutely had to experience: the Hozu River Boat Ride.
To cut straight to the chase,
it turned out to be my absolute favorite memory from Arashiyama.

Kyoto Travel: My Hozu River Boat Ride Experience in Arashiyama
This isn't just a simple boat ride;
it's a peaceful two-hour journey drifting through nature.
I highly recommend it as a unique way to experience Kyoto's scenic beauty.
What is the Arashiyama Hozu River Boat Ride?
First, Arashiyama is a gorgeous scenic area
located in western Kyoto,
famous for its Bamboo Forest, Togetsukyo Bridge, and the Hozu River.
It only takes about 30 to 40 minutes from Kyoto Station,
making it incredibly popular for a day trip itinerary.

Kyoto Travel: Stopped by Arashiyama for some delicious dango! haha
The landscapes are breathtaking all year round:
cherry blossoms in spring, lush green in summer, fiery autumn foliage, and serene snowscapes in winter!
With each season bringing a completely different vibe,
it's an absolute must-visit spot in Kyoto.
One of the most unique ways to experience this area
is the Hozu River Boat Ride.
It's a traditional boat ride that takes you on a 16km journey
from Kameoka all the way down to Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama.

What makes this ride so unique is that there's no engine.
Instead, three skilled boatmen manually steer the boat using oars and poles!
It's amazing to watch them navigate the current
using a long 5-meter bamboo pole to guide us smoothly down the river.
The slow pace lets you truly take in
the surrounding scenery,
giving you a wonderfully relaxing and peaceful experience.

I especially recommend it during spring or autumn over summer or winter!
Since the surrounding valley is a designated nature reserve,
you'll get endless, healing views of the river, mountains, and pristine nature.
Recommended Route: Sagano Romantic Train + Hozu River Boat Ride
This is the ultimate route I recommend for Arashiyama:
Sagano Romantic Train → Hozu River Boat Ride → Arrive in Arashiyama

Kyoto Travel: Taking the Hozu River Boat Ride after the Sagano Romantic Train
1. Ride the Sagano Romantic Train (Torokko) to admire the Hozu River gorge from high above.
2. Get off at Kameoka,
then hop on the boat ride to drift back down to Arashiyama.

I highly recommend this route
because the transit itself becomes a beautiful part of your trip.
Seeing the gorge from above on the train, then looking up from the water on the boat,
gives you two completely different, mind-blowing views!
Hozu River Boat Ride Hours & Booking Tips
The Hozu River Boat Ride is incredibly popular,
especially during peak cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
It often sells out, so you absolutely must book your tickets in advance.
Because each boat holds only about 20 passengers and requires three boatmen to row,
the daily capacity is strictly limited.

When I visited in 2024, the on-site ticket price for adults was ~$37.
The operating hours for the Hozu River Boat Ride
start at 8:30 AM and run until 3:00 PM.
Heads up: the last boat departs earlier than you might expect!
Boats run about 10 times a day at 30-minute to 1-hour intervals.
It seemed like they departed with two or three boats per time slot
rather than just a single boat.
Standard Timetable
08:30 / 09:00 / 10:00 / 11:00 / 11:30 / 12:00

How to Book
You can book the Hozu River Boat Ride on platforms like KKday, Trip.com, and WAUG,
but the options vary by site.
WAUG | Trip.com | KKday |
~$37 | ~$36 | Combined with Sagano Romantic Train From ~$72 |
WAUG and Trip.com are the platforms where you can still buy tickets even a day in advance,
and as of March 2026, Trip.com is slightly cheaper.

However, since the available ticket quantities may vary by platform,
it's a good idea to check both!

In the case of KKday,
you can't buy the Hozu River Boat Ride as a standalone ticket, but
you can buy a package combined with the Sagano Romantic Train ticket.
Hozu River Boat Ride Schedule and Duration
The actual duration can vary slightly depending on the day's weather and water levels,
but our ride took about 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Passing through rapids here and there mixed with
calmer stretches made it super engaging and fun—not a single boring moment!
The Highlight of the Hozu River Boat Ride: The Floating Market
As you approach downstream while enjoying the ride,
a small boat pulls up next to you. It's the floating market!

They sell dango, semi-dried squid, drinks, and more,
and I was honestly surprised by how delicious everything was!
Since it's right around the time you start getting peckish, you just can't resist buying something.

And the prices aren't too steep, so it's definitely worth a try.
It feels like a little surprise event popping up just as things are settling down,
adding another layer of fun to the boat ride.
Tips for the Hozu River Boat Ride

✔ The sun can be intense, so bring water and a hat
✔ There is no shade, so it can get very hot in the summer
✔ Highly recommended during spring and autumn
✔ English commentary is provided, but it's still fun even if you don't understand it haha
Overall Review of the Hozu River Boat Ride
At around ~$32 for adults and ~$26 for children, honestly,
it's not exactly cheap.
But watching the three oarsmen row and taking in the stunning natural scenery makes it
absolutely worth the unique experience.

Once you make it all the way down, you'll get off right here near Togetsukyo Bridge.
