Hotel Real

Santiago de Compostela, the historic endpoint of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, offers a range of accommodations. While there are certainly some luxurious options, the charming Old Town is predominantly filled with smaller, historic guesthouses housed in ancient buildings.

Today, I'm excited to share my experience staying at one of these hidden gems!

1. Where is Hotel Real Located in Santiago de Compostela?

While not everyone visits this city as a typical tourist, as someone who studied here, I can confidently recommend the best locations for your stay.

The Old Town, nestled around the iconic Cathedral, is a labyrinth of narrow, winding alleys and ancient stone buildings. This area is truly historic, with most structures reaching only about three to five stories high.

If you follow the main street, Rua do Franco (marked in orange on the map), it leads down to Alameda Park. This park acts as a gateway to the New Town.

You'll inevitably find yourself venturing into the New Town for shopping, as it's home to familiar stores like Zara and large supermarkets. It’s a modern contrast to the historic charm.

The New Town, as the name suggests, has a more contemporary urban feel rather than the quaint European vibe you might expect. You can choose your accommodation based on your priorities, but I generally don't recommend staying too far from the Cathedral. The Old Town's charming alleys are truly the best part to explore!

For reference, the train station is a bit further south of the New Town, about a 15-minute walk from Alameda Park.

Since my plan was to focus on the Cathedral and the Old Town, I chose to stay at Hotel Real, right in the heart of the historic district.

2. My Review of a Twin Room at Hotel Real

Just looking at the hotel's entrance, you can already get a sense of the Old Town's unique atmosphere, right? Most buildings here look just like this – it’s a completely different vibe from other Spanish cities.

It’s a three-story building, and most surrounding buildings are similar in height. A common drawback of hotels in older European city centers, not just in Santiago de Compostela, is the lack of an elevator.

Since it’s only a few floors, it’s usually not an issue, but lugging a suitcase during check-in and check-out can be a challenge! My mother and I were on a long trip with a rather large suitcase, and I was dreading the stairs, but the staff member was incredibly kind and helped us carry it up. Their exceptional friendliness truly stuck with me.

Here’s a glimpse of our small, modest twin room. There was even a little balcony-like space, but as you saw from the previous photos, the alleys are narrow, and the building across is quite close, so we didn't really use it for views.

The beds were clean, fresh towels were provided, and there was a wardrobe on one wall. The color scheme somehow reminded me of my student room, which was a pleasant surprise!

The bathroom was also spotlessly clean. As a 1-star hotel, I didn't have high expectations, but both the room and bathroom exceeded them.

Although I didn't use the bathtub, you can tell there's a decent amount of space.

My stay included breakfast, which I enjoyed in the kitchen area. It was simple, but surprisingly good!

Honestly, I had zero expectations, but this spread looks perfectly adequate for a simple breakfast, don't you think? I even liked the cute wallpaper in the background!

Brew a cup of coffee, toast some bread (I might have toasted mine a bit too long!), add some cheese and ham, and you’ve got a satisfying meal!

As you can see in the photo, there were also some pastries alongside the regular bread, perfect for a little treat.

Even though it’s a 1-star hotel, its excellent location, comfortable room, and friendly staff make it a place I’d happily stay at again if I return to Santiago.

I paid around ~$76 for my stay, which included breakfast. However, if you prefer to grab churros or something else for breakfast outside, the room-only option is incredibly affordable, making it a potentially better deal.

If you're not someone who typically eats hotel breakfast, this could be a fantastic value-for-money option!

3. Recommended for a Comfortable, Well-Located, and Budget-Friendly Stay

Santiago de Compostela, a city that sees a fair number of visitors and pilgrims, actually has more hotels than you might expect. I only needed a one-night stay and chose this hotel for its excellent value, and I was thoroughly satisfied.

If you’re planning a short visit, perhaps just for a night, I highly recommend this accommodation.

Of course, if your budget allows, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Parador de Santiago. It’s a truly exceptional hotel in an unparalleled location. Among the approximately 100 Paradores across Spain, the one in Santiago de Compostela is particularly renowned and offers a unique historical experience.

This particular Parador was originally built as a royal hospital for pilgrims in the late 15th century. It’s literally attached to the Cathedral! :)

Beyond the rooms, the inner courtyard gardens are absolutely stunning – I highly recommend checking out some photos. It’s truly magnificent.
