Exploring Shenzhen, China: A Day Trip from Hong Kong
Recommended Itinerary, Course, and Train Journey

For those of you planning a **Hong Kong trip**,
maybe you're thinking,
'Since I'm already in Hong Kong, why not check out a nearby Chinese city?'
Many of you might relate to this, right?
This thought becomes even more tempting, especially when you consider
Hong Kong's surprisingly high cost of living.
In this scenario, the closest Chinese city to Hong Kong is
none other than **Shenzhen**, famous as a city of the future.
You can get there in just 14 minutes by high-speed train,
and the round-trip fare is even less than ~$21,
making it a fantastic option for a light day trip!
Today, I'll be sharing the **day trip itinerary to Shenzhen**
that I followed during my **Hong Kong trip**.
Just a heads-up, we primarily went to enjoy lots of delicious and affordable food
and do some shopping, so keep that in mind!
First things first, if you're planning a day trip from Hong Kong to Shenzhen,
you'll need to **book your train tickets first**.
While there are other ways to get there, like buses or subways,
I opted for the high-speed train because it's super fast and comfortable.
📍 For your Hong Kong-Shenzhen train journey, I recommend taking the
**9:02 AM or 9:08 AM train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen**,
and for your return from **Shenzhen to Hong Kong, any train departing after 9:00 PM**.
While there are earlier trains available, most department stores in Shenzhen
don't open until after 10:00 AM,
so arriving much earlier might not leave you with a whole lot to do.
Also, if you book your return trip too early,
you might find yourself rushed for dinner,
so I suggest opting for a late evening train.
**Shenzhen is incredibly close, taking only 14 minutes one-way,**
**and the fare is super affordable at only ~$10 one-way.**
Just a heads-up, tickets for popular train times
can often sell out.

I took the train departing from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station at 9:02 AM.
When taking the train from Hong Kong to mainland China,
there's one important thing to keep in mind:
the border crossing between Hong Kong and mainland China is actually located within Hong Kong itself.
❗️Therefore, when you're making your way from Hong Kong to mainland China,
I recommend arriving at the train station at least an hour in advance.
After arriving at Futian Station in Shenzhen, China,
I hopped in a taxi to head into the city center.
Since it wasn't even 10 AM yet, most shopping malls were probably still
closed.
So, I recommend starting by exploring the cafes on the first floor of the shopping mall
and trying out a variety of Chinese beverages.
There are many brands like Mixue, Moliti, and Cha Ji,
and they're about half the price compared to Hong Kong, so definitely give them a try!
Afterward, I spent almost all my time at Coco Park,
Shenzhen's most popular shopping mall.
For lunch, I indulged in some spicy dishes at Huayan Jie,
a Sichuan restaurant located within Coco Park.
Since a lot of Hong Kong cuisine can be quite rich and oily,
Sichuan food was perfect for refreshing my palate.
After that, I did some shopping inside Coco Park mall.
As anyone who's visited a Chinese shopping mall knows,
there are so many interesting products to discover.
Between cute character shops and Miniso,
I found that 1-2 hours flew by just by browsing.
The gua sha tool and massage stick I bought from Miniso, in particular,
were such great finds that I still use them regularly!
And in the grocery mall located in the basement of Coco Park,
I stocked up on souvenirs and snacks.
Most snacks and products are less than half the price
compared to Hong Kong, so
I highly recommend buying all your souvenirs here.
After finishing our shopping, we took a short break at a cafe.
Then, we treated ourselves to a foot massage at a nearby massage shop.
The massage was **118 yuan for an hour**, which was incredibly affordable compared to Hong Kong's prices.
Hong Kong is also a walking-heavy destination, so I had accumulated some fatigue,
but one foot massage was enough to completely melt away all that tiredness!
Afterward, we hunted down a fantastic lamb skewer restaurant nearby
and savored our dinner.
When in China, lamb skewers and beer are an absolute must-have,
but in Hong Kong, lamb skewer places are quite rare and pricey. So, we truly indulged in lamb skewers until our stomachs were bursting!
For our final stop in Shenzhen, we admired the city's night view from Citizen Square.
Although there wasn't a laser show, the cityscape created by the towering buildings
still offered its own charming ambiance.
After completing all our activities, we headed back to **Futian Station**
and **returned to Hong Kong by train**. Remember, you only need to arrive about 30 minutes before your departure time,
and immigration clearance happens once you alight in Hong Kong!
Today, I introduced a **fantastic day trip itinerary from Hong Kong**
to **Shenzhen, China**.
Despite being just a 15-minute journey from Hong Kong,
prices here are less than half, there's an abundance of delicious Chinese food,
and plenty of souvenirs to pick up. All in all,
it was a truly satisfying experience.
What made it even better was being able to enjoy
lamb skewers to my heart's content, something that's hard to find in Hong Kong.
For those of you on a longer trip to Hong Kong,
if you're looking for a nearby destination with a different vibe
or are **tired of Hong Kong's high prices**, then **a day trip to nearby Shenzhen is a must-do!**
The high-speed train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen takes approximately 14 minutes one-way. The one-way fare is an affordable ~$10.
For traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, we recommend taking the 9:02 AM or 9:08 AM train. For returning from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, trains after 9:00 PM are suggested. This schedule considers Shenzhen's department store opening hours and dinner times.
When taking a train from Hong Kong to mainland China, it's advisable to arrive at the station at least one hour before departure, as border control procedures are conducted in Hong Kong.
If you arrive at Futian Station before 10 AM and the shopping malls are not yet open, we recommend trying various cafes on the first floor of the mall, such as Mixue, Moliti, or Chage, where drinks are roughly half the price compared to Hong Kong.
In Shenzhen, a one-hour foot massage costs 118 Chinese Yuan. This is a very affordable price compared to Hong Kong.
