When you don't have time for a long overseas trip,
but still crave a taste of an international vibe,
a trip to Tsushima Island might be just what you're looking for!

Especially in Hitakatsu, it's often less about grand sightseeing
and more about indulging in shopping and culinary adventures.
But with so many options, how do you choose where to eat?
Today, I'll be sharing 5 fantastic eateries to check out during your trip to Hitakatsu, Tsushima Island, Japan!

📍 Our first recommended spot is Ya-e Shokudo, which operates as a restaurant during the day,
and transforms into an Izakaya-style pub in the evening.
Unlike most restaurants near Hitakatsu Port that close early,
Ya-e Shokudo stays open until 11 PM, making it
the perfect place to enjoy a meal even late at night.

From noodle dishes, stir-fries, and fried foods to various skewers,
you'll find a wide array of options.
Plus, you can pair your meal with a refreshing draft beer or sake.
What's more, most menu items are priced around 1,000 yen,
and it's an izakaya that doesn't even charge a seating fee,
making it incredibly satisfying and excellent value for money!

We especially recommend trying the pork belly skewers and chicken skin skewers;
they're delicious with a cold beer!

📍 Next up is Kaikan Shokudo.
This charming restaurant is run by a grandfather and his son,
and they specialize in serving Japanese home-style dishes.
Stepping inside, you'll immediately feel the traces of its long history,
with its tableware, tables, and seating all exuding
a cozy, local vibe, much like what you'd find in a traditional eatery back home.

Their menu features set meals like Tonkatsu (pork cutlet), stir-fried vegetables, and Karaage (fried chicken),
along with set meals of Omurice (omelet rice) and curry, as well as various noodle and rice bowl dishes.
Most items are incredibly affordable, priced around 1,000 yen.
While the dishes might appear simple, the flavors are surprisingly excellent,
and the atmosphere made us feel like we were enjoying a meal
at a beloved grandma's house in the countryside. We left feeling truly satisfied!

📍 Our third stop is Mado, which is undoubtedly one of the most popular restaurants among tourists.
You'll easily spot this restaurant as you walk from Hitakatsu Port towards the town center,
and be prepared for a long wait after opening hours.
Interestingly, the menu isn't extensive,
but besides regular Japanese dishes,
they also serve Okinawan cuisine, which is a unique find!
Similarly, most food items are priced around 1,000 yen,
though the Okinawan dishes tend to be a bit pricier.

What we tried were the Taco Rice and Salmon Ochazuke.
The ochazuke had a warm, clean, and comforting soup-rice feel to it,
while the Taco Rice was literally tacos served over rice,
offering a unique flavor profile.
While the food at Mado was generally quite standard in taste,
the aesthetically pleasing plating made the experience quite satisfying.

📍 Our fourth stop was Gogo Curry, located not near Hitakatsu Port,
but right next to the Value Mart Ohura branch.
Gogo Curry is a chain restaurant with branches even on mainland Japan,
specializing in Kanazawa-style curry.
We stumbled upon it by chance after visiting Value Mart,
and its unique plating drew us in.

Toppings generally include chicken katsu, pork loin katsu, and fried shrimp.
We ordered the Goriemon Curry and Loin Katsu Curry, which were plated
to resemble a human face.
It was characterized by rice and cabbage served on a stainless steel plate,
and the curry itself had a yellowish-brown hue.

The loin katsu was thin but crispy, making it quite tasty.
The sausage and egg toppings in the Goriemon Curry were
nothing special, just ordinary.
The curry itself was smooth and made for a light, satisfying meal.
If you're already visiting Value Mart, it's definitely worth checking out!

📍 Our fifth and final stop is Poemu Bakery.
This bakery is incredibly popular among tourists,
with its yakisoba bread being a particular crowd-pleaser.
The most popular breads often sell out by opening time,
so it's best to arrive right when they open.

I visited a bit later in the morning,
and the popular items were already sold out. Only sandwiches, hamburgers,
and ordinary breads like cream buns and donuts remained.
The bread prices were around 200 yen, similar to bakeries in Korea,
and the selection was quite diverse for its size, with over 20 types of bread.

Because it's run by a grandmother,
it has a charming, warm, rural bakery feel,
and the breads themselves have a simple, retro vibe,
making it feel even more endearing.
However, the overall taste of the bread is quite ordinary,
so rather than visiting with sky-high expectations,
I recommend going to soak in the nostalgic atmosphere!

My experience with the restaurants in Hitakatsu, Tsushima, was that they generally
had the ambiance of eateries you'd find in a small, local neighborhood rather than flashy establishments.
They were humble but offered great value for a satisfying meal.
This combined atmosphere evoked a sense of
nostalgia for times gone by in many places.
Referencing the five Hitakatsu eateries I introduced today,
I hope you have a Tsushima trip where you can experience both
delicious food and heartfelt ambiance!
Yae Restaurant operates until 11 PM, unlike most restaurants near Hitakatsu Port. It functions as a diner during the day and an izakaya in the evening, so you can enjoy meals or izakaya menus even late at night.
GoGo Curry is a Kanazawa-style curry specialty restaurant located next to Value Mart Oura branch, not towards Hitakatsu Port. You can enjoy curries topped with chicken katsu, pork loin katsu, fried shrimp, and more. A distinctive feature is that the rice and cabbage are served on a stainless steel plate.
Popular breads like Yakisoba Bread at Poemu Bakery usually sell out during opening hours, so it's best to go right when they open. If you visit late in the morning, popular breads might be sold out, leaving only ordinary items like sandwiches or hamburgers.
Mado Restaurant sells Okinawan dishes in addition to ordinary Japanese food. The article mentions tasting Taco Rice, which has a unique flavor like eating tacos on rice, and Salmon Ochazuke, which feels like a warm and simple rice soup.
