Following up on our previous post about transportation, today I'm sharing my firsthand experience exploring the castle's interior, including the stunning Main Keep. Many visitors wonder whether to combine their castle visit with the adjacent Kokoen Garden. My advice? Absolutely! Getting to Himeji Castle

Most travelers exploring the Kansai region choose Himeji as a day trip from Osaka or Kobe. For detailed routes, you can refer to my previous post (link at the end of this article). We took the JR Special Rapid Service from Kobe and arrived in just 40 minutes. If you're combining Osaka and Kobe in your itinerary, I highly recommend using the JR Kansai Area Pass for convenient and cost-effective travel.

Stepping off the JR Himeji Station, the pristine white castle immediately catches your eye in the distance. From the station to the castle entrance, I suggest skipping the bus and enjoying a leisurely 20-minute walk with your family. The streets are incredibly clean, and you'll find charming souvenir shops and stores along the way, making the stroll enjoyable. As you get closer, the "White Heron Castle" truly comes into view, and it's quite a sight to behold.

Upon entering the castle grounds, we were greeted by a bustling crowd of international tourists. In front of the towering Main Keep lies a vast, beautifully manicured lawn – a perfect photo op! Make sure to snap some pictures both when you arrive and before you leave, as the weather can change quickly. It’s always best to capture those beautiful blue skies while you have them.

Once you reach the castle gate, you'll need to purchase your tickets at the booth. Be aware that admission fees have recently changed, so it’s always a good idea to check the official website before your 2026 visit.

For just about an extra ~$1, you can get a combined ticket that includes entry to the beautiful Japanese garden, Kokoen, right next door. It's definitely worth it! Children under 18 years old get free admission, making it a great destination for families.

Considering a Guided Tour?

We explored Himeji Castle on our own, but we noticed many international visitors with guides. I overheard some of their detailed explanations, and it seemed like a wonderful way to gain deeper insights into the castle's history and architecture. If you prefer a more profound experience, a guided tour could certainly enhance your visit.

Following the signs, we began our immersive tour. You'll notice many triangular and square openings along the castle walls. These are actually defensive firing slits (called sama) used in the past to attack enemies. The square openings were for archers, while the triangular and circular ones were for firearms. The intricate patterns on the roof tiles also showcase the incredible craftsmanship. Be mindful that there are many slopes and stairs, so those with mobility issues should take care.

Inside the Main Keep: Steep Stairs Ahead!

When you enter the Main Keep, staff will hand you a plastic bag for your shoes, as you'll need to remove them before stepping inside. The interior is meticulously crafted from wood, bearing the marks of centuries, and its structure is well-explained with helpful diagrams.

A crucial tip: the stairs inside the keep are incredibly steep, almost vertical! I'd strongly advise against wearing skirts or short shorts. Opt for comfortable pants or longer shorts to navigate them safely.

The interior is remarkably well-maintained, and as you ascend, the views from each level change, adding to the adventure. Be aware that selfie sticks are strictly prohibited inside, so please adhere to the rules. With so many stairs, it's quite the leg workout! It might be challenging for older visitors, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

Each floor offers a slightly different perspective, so I recommend taking a moment to admire the view from every level.

Reaching the top floor, the 6th level, you're rewarded with an incredible panoramic view of the city, framed by the castle's iconic roof tiles. It would have been even more breathtaking with a clear blue sky, but it was a bit overcast during our visit.

Right in the center of the uppermost floor, you'll find a space where people queue to pray. This is the Osakabe Shrine, dedicated to the castle's guardian deity. It's a sacred spot where rituals were performed to ensure the castle's safety.

After exploring the top floor, we carefully made our way down the incredibly steep stairs. Seriously, take your time and watch your step!

Our visit took approximately 30 minutes for exterior photos and a short break, plus about 40 minutes inside the keep. So, without a guide, expect to spend around 1 hour and 10 minutes exploring. While I wished we'd opted for a guided tour to fully immerse ourselves, our self-guided Himeji Castle visit was certainly enriching.
