If you are planning an unforgettable trip to Kyoto, one of your first steps will be figuring out how to get there from Kansai International Airport (KIX).

When it comes to traveling from Kansai Airport to Kyoto, you have two primary options:

the airport limousine bus or the JR Haruka Limited Express train.

In a country where time is of the essence, we highly recommend skipping the highway traffic and choosing the train.

The JR Haruka Express gets you directly to Kyoto Station in just 1 hour and 20 minutes, completely avoiding potential road delays.

This is why the Haruka train is the go-to transit choice for savvy travelers heading to Kyoto.

It is also significantly cheaper to purchase your ticket online before you arrive in Japan rather than buying it at the airport counter.

That is why we have listed it as an absolute must-do on your pre-trip checklist!

Once you clear customs at Kansai Airport, simply follow the blue line on the floor to head toward the train station. You will want to wait at Platform 4.

Be sure to check the electronic schedule boards to confirm you are boarding the correct express train.

The trains run conveniently at 30-minute intervals.

While you can reserve your seats ahead of time via the official app,

flight arrivals and immigration wait times can be unpredictable. Because of this, we decided to go with unreserved seating for our journey to Kyoto.

(Pro tip: If you buy a mobile QR ticket, keep in mind that simple screenshots will not work at the gates. Make sure you can log into your booking account to display the live ticket.)

(Also, keep your physical or digital ticket handy, as train conductors do check tickets in the unreserved cars.)

If you choose not to reserve a seat, Cars 5, 6, and 7 are designated for unreserved passengers. Simply line up at the corresponding markers on the platform floor.

Double-check the platform floor indicators to make sure you are standing in the correct lane for the Haruka Express.

Many travelers identify the Haruka train by its iconic Hello Kitty design on the outside.

However, the specific train we boarded had a standard, plain exterior with no Hello Kitty wraps!

At first, we actually worried we were boarding the wrong train.

Do not let a plain exterior fool you! Make sure you do not miss your train waiting for a pink one.

Even if the outside is plain, the inside of the cabin may still feature the adorable Hello Kitty seat covers.

Our hotel, the Richmond Hotel Premier Kyoto Shijo, was only a couple of stops away from Kyoto Station.

Since we had heavy luggage, we opted to hail an Uber directly from the station.

(It was a quick 2-mile ride that took about 10 minutes. Depending on your exact destination, expect an Uber fare to run around ~$10 to ~$13.)

For our return trip from Kyoto back to Kansai Airport, we decided to book reserved seats the day before.

Since our flight departure time was fixed, we knew exactly which train we needed to catch.

You can easily reserve your seats online ahead of time.

And here is a great travel hack: if you happen to miss your scheduled train, do not panic! You are allowed to change your reservation once for free.

(We actually ran late and had to take advantage of this policy—it was incredibly smooth and stress-free!)

On our journey back to the airport, we finally got to ride the fully wrapped Hello Kitty train!

There is even a dedicated photo zone inside the train where you can snap pictures with Hello Kitty.

If you are a fan, make sure to walk through the cars and grab a quick photo!

Booking your ticket online is much cheaper than purchasing it at the station.

Depending on the booking platform you use, prices can vary by up to ~$2, so it definitely pays to compare and book your JR Haruka Pass before you fly.
