For getting to Tam Dao from Hanoi,
a private rental car with a driver was definitely the most comfortable option.
From Hanoi to Tam Dao,
it's about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive.
It's perfectly doable as a day trip.
As a mountainous resort area often called 'Mini Sapa',
it tends to be cooler than the city.
If you're considering Tam Dao for a family trip,
sorting out your transportation first will make your itinerary much smoother.
1. Hanoi to Tam Dao Day Trip at a Glance

Distance: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Hanoi
(varies depending on traffic conditions)
Itinerary: Possible as a day trip
Transportation: Private rental car with a driver
Recommended Usage Time: 10 hours
Great to Combine With: Tay Thien Pagoda
(approximately 40 minutes by car from Tam Dao Square)
2. Getting to Tam Dao from Hanoi
Why a private rental car was the most convenient

Tam Dao is located quite a distance from Hanoi city center,
and combining it with Tay Thien Pagoda extends your travel route significantly.
By dedicating a whole day to a car with a driver,
I could focus entirely on the itinerary without worrying about transportation.
You can adjust the schedule and sequence to your own pace,
and leave your luggage in the car while you explore.
Plus, there's no need to find separate transportation back to Hanoi from Tam Dao,
and it's easy to combine Tay Thien Pagoda and Tam Dao in one go.

3. Tam Dao Family Trip Car: Which One to Choose — 4, 7, or 16-Seater?

When traveling as a family,
there are more people, and luggage tends to accumulate quite a bit.
If you're traveling with parents or children,
you might need to take breaks during travel or change your itinerary.
That's why a spacious vehicle is often necessary.

-> 4-seater: For smaller groups
-> 7-seater: A suitable size for family travel
-> 16-seater: When three generations travel together or for larger groups like family gatherings
Private rental cars departing from Hanoi
can be chosen from 4-seater, 7-seater, or 16-seater options.
Here, you'll find a discount promotion happening right now,
so even large vehicles for extended families can be booked without a hitch.
4. Hanoi to Tam Dao Rental Car Fees and Usage Hours

The fees for a 16-seater are as follows:
(Based on departure from Hanoi city center, per vehicle fee, verified as of October 2026)
Usage Hours | Original Price | Price with 8% Coupon |
5 Hours | ~$70 | ~$65 |
10 Hours | ~$110 | ~$101 |
For 4-seater and 7-seater vehicle fees,
it's most accurate to check by date on the booking page.
The fee is for one vehicle,
so there was a notice to set the number of people to '1' when making the payment.

You can even add Noi Bai Airport pickup or a visit to Mega Grand World Hanoi as separate options!
Between the 5-hour and 10-hour options, the 10-hour plan was definitely more realistic.
Since round-trip travel to Tam Dao alone takes 3-4 hours, the 5-hour package leaves almost no time to actually explore the area.
I opted for the 10-hour booking, and I was so glad not to feel rushed!

Keep in mind that prices and conditions for visiting Tam Dao might vary depending on the season.
The prices above are based on Hanoi city pickups,
so for your Tam Dao itinerary, you can inquire via KakaoTalk after booking.
What's even better is that a Korean-speaking representative will respond, making it super convenient!
5. Your Tam Dao Itinerary: A 10-Hour Course Sequence

This is an example based on a 10-hour trip.
Timings may vary depending on weather and traffic conditions.
Time | Itinerary | Notes |
07:00 | Depart from Hanoi | Based on city pickup |
08:30~09:00 | Arrive at Tay Thien Pagoda | Cable car & temple grounds |
12:00 | Arrive at Tam Dao Square | Lunch |
14:00 | Tam Dao Church | Photo spot |
15:00 | Depart for Hanoi | |
Around 17:00 | Arrive in Hanoi | May vary depending on traffic |
The most common and convenient route is Tay Thien Pagoda first, then Tam Dao.
This flow allows you to explore the mountain in the early morning before heading over to Tam Dao Square around lunchtime.

Trying to fit this itinerary into a 5-hour package would be quite a rush.
With 3-4 hours just for round-trip travel, opting for the 10-hour package is much more realistic.

Tam Dao Church: Perfect for Your Photos

After lunch, we stopped by the church around 2 PM.
It's a charming, quaint little spot,
and the photos here turn out really well.
You can take photos with the abandoned hotel building,
known as a symbol of Tam Dao, in the background.
With so many fantastic photo opportunities,
there were even local photographers on hand,
ready to help capture your perfect shot.
If you're on a family trip, it seemed like a great place to take group photos too.
It's a good idea to set aside some time for photos around this hour, right after lunch.

6. Essential Checks Before You Go

Weather:
Since it's a mountainous area, many reviews mention foggy days. It's a good idea to check the forecast before you depart.
Weekends & Public Holidays:
Travel time might increase. It's better to allow extra time in your itinerary.
Internet:
Connectivity can be spotty during transit, so make sure you have enough data prepared beforehand.
Footwear:
There are walking sections and stairs, so comfortable athletic shoes are recommended.
Cash:
It's good to have some small denominations of Vietnamese Dong (VND) for on-site payments or snacks.
