Hanoi's Michelin-Recognized Pho Gia Truyen
My Personal Review (Prices & Waiting Time)
The pho spot visited by Baek Jong-won
Hanoi's Old Quarter is absolutely brimming with pho restaurants.
Phở Thìn, Lý Quốc Sư, Phở 10...
With names so similar, it's always a dilemma knowing where to start.
This time, I personally visited Phở Gia Truyền,
one of the most frequently mentioned among them.
I've meticulously compiled details on its location, prices, waiting time, and taste.
Where is Phở Gia Truyền located?
Store Location
📍 49 Bát Đàn, Cửa Đông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
📍 The signboard actually says "49A Bát Đàn"
📍 Inside the Old Quarter, on an alley towards Đồng Xuân Market
📍 Phở Gia Truyền
49 P. Bát Đàn, Phố cổ Hà Nội, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
If you've booked accommodation near Hoàn Kiếm Lake,
it's well within walking distance.
The signboard isn't particularly flashy,
so it's a good idea to save the location on your map app beforehand.
Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit
Hanoi Phở Gia Truyền / Phở Gia Truyền Location
📍 06:00~10:00 / 18:00~20:30 (Daily, two sessions)
I initially thought they only operated in the mornings, but they're also open in the evenings.
Apparently, they sometimes close earlier than scheduled if ingredients run out,
so if you're aiming for the morning session, it might be best to go early.
We visited during the evening hours.
Phở Gia Truyền Menu and Prices
Phở Gia Truyền Prices, Phở Gia Truyền Opening Hours

📍 Single menu item: Beef Pho (only cuts of beef can be chosen)
Menu | Price |
Chín (Well-done) | 55,000 đồng |
Tái (Rare) | 60,000 đồng |
Tái Nạm (Rare + Brisket) | 70,000 đồng |
Add egg (trứng gà) | 5,000 đồng |
I snapped a picture of the price list posted next to the counter, and you can see there's a 5,000 đồng difference between the cuts. In terms of USD, it's around ~$2 per bowl, which isn't the cheapest for a local eatery, but it didn't feel expensive either.
By the way, "Quẩy" (fried dough sticks), though not on the menu, can also be ordered. As someone who's spent years in Hanoi, these are an absolute must-try when having pho! Don't miss out!
How to Order and Pay
Hanoi Pho Restaurant, Hanoi Michelin Restaurant
The system was to first tell them your menu choice and number of people at the counter, pay right then and there, and then take a seat to wait for your order.

Once an order is placed, the meat is freshly sliced or chopped on a cutting board as a topping,
and broth, which is constantly simmering on the side, is poured over it, then garnished with green onions and cilantro.

Seeing the broth continuously boiling made it feel like they were making it fresh.
Payment was only possible with cash or Vietnamese bank transfer.
Card payments are not accepted, so it's best to have some smaller cash denominations ready.
How long was the actual waiting time?
Hanoi Phở Gia Truyền Waiting Time, Baek Jong-won Hanoi Pho

We visited as a pair during the weekend evening hours (Saturday),
and the wait was about 5-10 minutes.
Even though the turnover rate was quick, we saw the line continuously growing behind us,
which made it clear that this is a place with consistently high demand.
The wait time can vary depending on the day of the week or time of day you visit, so I recommend arriving with some flexibility.
How Was the Taste? (Based on Tái Nạm)
pho tai nam
I ordered and tried the Tái Nạm (Phở Tái Nạm).
The broth had a deep flavor, with a subtle hint of garlic.
It was surprisingly rich and hearty, more so than its initial impression.
The Quẩy (fried dough sticks) we ordered alongside it
had an impressively chewy texture.
As you chew, it even takes on a texture similar to a glutinous rice donut, making it delicious whether dipped in the broth or eaten plain.

The toppings are simple.
Just green onions, a bit of cilantro, and meat, that's all.
There were no bean sprouts or lime served separately.
It's more about achieving a clean and savory finish.

👍 What I loved
→ The broth is incredibly rich and deep.
→ The meat is sliced fresh and added right before your eyes, ensuring peak freshness.
→ The *quẩy* (fried dough sticks) had a wonderfully satisfying texture.
→ The fast turnover means you won't be waiting long to dive in.
🤔 What I found less ideal
→ No card payments accepted, so cash is a must.
→ With only one menu item (beef pho), it might not suit everyone's taste.
→ The ambiance truly embraces that old-school local eatery charm, which means it's a world away from a cool, air-conditioned restaurant... just something to keep in mind!
Michelin for 4 Consecutive Years,
Was the Baek Jong-won Effect Truly Magical?

Inside, the walls proudly displayed Michelin Guide
Bib Gourmand plaques for 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.
That means it's been recognized for four straight years! A large portrait of what seemed to be the founder also
hung on one wall, hinting at the long history of the establishment.
There's a lot of talk about an increase in Korean visitors
since Baek Jong-won featured it on his show, but
when I actually visited, it was a vibrant mix of foreign tourists and eager locals, all filling the seats.
Phở Gia Truyền vs. Lý Quốc Sư (Phở 10): What's the Difference?
Comparing with Lý Quốc Sư Phở in Hanoi
Comparing it with Lý Quốc Sư (Phở 10), which is often mentioned alongside it, the broth styles are quite different from the start.
Category | Phở Gia Truyền | Phở 10 Lý Quốc Sư |
Address | 49 Bát Đàn, Hoàn Kiếm | 10 Lý Quốc Sư, Hoàn Kiếm |
Operating Hours | 06:00~10:00 / 18:00~20:30 | 06:00~14:00 / 17:00~22:00 |
Price Range | 55,000~70,000동 | 50,000~130,000동 |
Broth Style | Rich and deep | Known for being clear and clean |
Menu | Beef Pho only | Beef Pho with various options |
Payment | Cash or local bank transfer only | May vary by branch |
Notes | Only one original branch | Multiple branches, need to check for the original address |
Lý Quốc Sư generally has longer operating hours and more menu options, so if your schedule is a bit more relaxed, this spot is definitely worth considering too.
Phở Shop Recommendations by Type
If you crave a rich and robust broth, Phở Gia Truyền will be right up your alley.
Conversely, if you're looking for a clean, non-greasy broth, Lý Quốc Sư might just be your perfect match.
If you're an early bird, aim for the 6-10 AM slot. If you prefer to head out in the evening from your accommodation, target the 6-8:30 PM slot.
Good Things to Prepare Before Your Visit

There are surprisingly many local eateries that don't accept card payments, so it's smart to have a good stash of small-denomination cash on hand.
Also, since there's a lot of navigating through alleys in Hanoi,
you'll often need to keep Grab or a map app open. So,
I highly recommend preparing an eSIM with plenty of data in advance.
