When preparing for a trip to Hanoi in October,
the first thing people worry about is the weather.
Some say it's hot, others say it's cool.
Both are true.
**This is because the feeling of early October and late October is quite different.**

I'll compare each aspect based on the standards I used when planning routes for my friends while living in Hanoi.

**This is the period when the mid-summer rainy season transitions to the dry season.**
Looking at the numbers alone, it might seem like early autumn in Korea,
but in reality, daytime temperatures can rise close to 30℃ until the first week of October.
**Humidity also still lingers,**
so if you walk around the Old Quarter for about an hour, your back tends to get damp.
**The atmosphere significantly shifts around the third week.**
In the morning, the air on your arms feels cool when riding a motorbike,
and even sitting by the lake in the evening, you won't break a sweat.
Even if it rains, it doesn't pour like in summer and usually stops quickly.
A single folding umbrella was usually enough to avoid major disruptions to my plans.
This year, **October has two long weekends in Korea.**
**From the 3rd (Sat) to the 5th (Mon) with the National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol) substitute holiday,**
**and from the 9th (Fri) to the 11th (Sun) for Hangeul Day.**
If you add 3 days of annual leave in between, it extends to 9 days,
so it feels like flights to Hanoi during these two weeks sell out quickly.
If your itinerary involves a lot of walking, after the third week is definitely more comfortable.

However, it's definitely better to include one or two thin long-sleeved shirts or blouses.
The air conditioning in Hanoi's shopping malls and cafes is seriously powerful – way stronger than what you might be used to!
Step inside after sweating it out in the heat, and your arms will be chilly in a mere 10 minutes.
If you're traveling in the latter half of the month, a light cardigan for the evenings should be perfect.
It's not like late November weather where you'd need a lightweight puffer jacket, so no worries there!

→ A parasol or a wide-brimmed hat (the midday sun and UV rays are still intense!)
→ Comfortable sneakers (the Old Quarter sidewalks can be uneven, and you'll often find yourself walking on the road due to motorbike parking!)
→ A shower filter and any personal medications you take regularly
→ Install the Grab app and register your payment card (do this before you depart!)
No need to weigh yourself down with toiletries or snacks.
You can easily find most essentials at WinMart stores or pharmacies in every neighborhood.
Some charming souvenir shops and local eateries might only accept cash,
so it's a good idea to carry a small amount of local currency (VND) for convenience.

How to Get from Hanoi Airport to the City Center
86 Bus vs. Grab vs. Private Pickup
Noi Bai Airport is approximately 30km from the charming Hoan Kiem Old Quarter.
You essentially have three main options,
and the best choice often depends on your arrival time and how much luggage you're carrying.
🚌 The 86 Bus
The fare is 50,000 VND per person, and it takes about 50-60 minutes to reach the city center.
Buses depart from the airport roughly from 7 AM until around 10 PM, running every 30-45 minutes.
Since it stops conveniently near the Old Quarter and directly in front of the Opera House,
it's a pretty good route if your accommodation is in the Hoan Kiem area.
The only real downside is that you'll need to drag your luggage from the bus stop to your accommodation.
The sidewalks in the Old Quarter can be quite challenging for suitcase wheels!
🚗 Grab (Ride-Sharing)
From the airport to the Old Quarter, Grab usually costs between 250,000 and 400,000 VND.
During heavy rain, rush hour, or late at night, the price can sometimes even exceed 400,000 VND.
Always double-check that the license plate displayed in your Grab app matches the actual vehicle before getting in!
🙋 Private Airport Pickup
For a standard sedan, prices generally range from 350,000 to 450,000 VND, varying based on the number of passengers, time of day, and your specific destination.
It's usually slightly more expensive than Grab, or sometimes similar, but the great thing is the price is fixed upfront.
Personally, I almost always pre-book a pickup when I'm heading home from the airport.
Even if immigration takes longer than expected, your driver will patiently wait for you,
and you won't have to worry about dragging your luggage around looking for the Grab pickup point.

Flights from Korea often arrive late at night.
By that time, the #86 bus might have already stopped running or be near its last service,
and Grab fares are also likely to have surcharges.
On such days, booking a pick-up service is the least tiring option.
In my experience, I always book an airport pick-up whenever I travel back from Korea!

The easiest way to decide on your accommodation location is by the length of your stay.
For 2-3 nights, Hoan Kiem Old Quarter is a great choice,
while for 4-5 nights or more, you might consider splitting your stay with West Lake (Tay Ho).
Hoan Kiem is mostly walkable.
The lake, Old Quarter alleys, souvenir shops, and delicious restaurants are all within walking distance,
significantly reducing travel stress for first-time visitors.
An evening stroll by the lake is especially lovely in October.
From Friday to Sunday nights, the area around the lake transforms into a pedestrian street,
making it perfect for weekend getaways and holidays.
However, motorcycle noise can continue late into the night,
and boutique hotel rooms tend to be on the smaller side.

West Lake offers a completely different vibe.
Along the lakeside, you'll find charming brunch cafes and pubs,
and the lake's color at sunset is most beautiful during this season.

It takes about 15-25 minutes to reach the Old Quarter.
When traveling with parents, choosing a large hotel with reliable breakfast and room conditions is definitely more comfortable.
If you're with companions who might find long walks through alleys challenging,
the convenience of the hotel itself felt more important than its location.

Prices tend to be higher during holiday weeks.
If it's your first time in Hanoi, even just 2 nights in Hoan Kiem will make your itinerary much lighter.
If your trip is longer, dividing your stay between Hoan Kiem first and then Tay Ho was also a good option.
