Sometimes, you stumble upon a place multiple times that just screams, "Check me out!" That's exactly how I discovered Godaime Hanayama Udon in Tokyo's upscale Ginza district. The first few times I walked by, the line snaked so far down the street I just thought, "What's the hype?" and kept going. But after seeing those persistent queues day after day, my curiosity finally got the better of me. As I waited, I realized this wasn't just any udon spot; it was consistently ranked on "must-try" Tokyo restaurant lists. Clearly, those crowds weren't there for nothing!

Here's how my experience unfolded:

This photo was taken at 11:06 AM. Honestly, I hadn't planned on eating here that day; I was just passing by and snapped a quick picture. But when I couldn't decide on a lunch spot, I remembered the long lines and decided to circle back. By the time I returned, it was around 11:40 AM.

The queue at that point was formidable. The sign indicated an approximate 60-minute wait from where I stood.

And the line just kept growing behind me!

To pass the time, I checked out some of the displays. Ugh, I really dislike waiting in lines! To make matters worse, the sun was surprisingly strong. While the front of the line enjoyed some shade from an adjacent building, the back was directly exposed to the scorching sun, which made the wait even more challenging. Lesson learned: for popular spots like this, you really need to plan an "open run" and arrive before opening, rather than winging it like I did.

Signature Dishes and the Menu

A Must-Try in Tokyo

After a roughly 40-minute wait (quicker than the estimated 60 minutes!), I finally entered at 12:22 PM. I'm a big fan of Zaru Udon, so my first choice was cold noodles. Next, I had to decide between their standard udon noodles and their signature wide, flat noodles (Onihimokawa). Honestly, my gut told me to go for the standard noodles, as I typically prefer a chewier texture. Zaru Udon, in its essence, relies on two key elements: the chewiness of the noodles and the flavor of the dipping sauce (tsuyu). I just felt the regular noodles would deliver a better chew. However, after such a long wait, I felt compelled to try their famous signature dish! (It's the first item on the menu in the photo above).

Is This Tokyo Udon Spot Worth the Hype?

So, was it delicious? Yes, it was definitely tasty. Given that it's one of my favorite dishes and I'd endured a hot wait, it would have been hard for it not to be enjoyable. However, because Zaru Udon is a personal favorite, my expectations were high. While the overall experience was good, a combination of factors led to a slight disappointment in one of my two key criteria: the noodle texture. It was exactly as I'd anticipated; the wide, flat noodles, while chewy for their type, just didn't have the same satisfying bounce as I imagine the standard noodles would have. Still, this place is famous and has even won awards, so it's a great spot for memorable photos and a unique culinary experience. If those are your goals, it's absolutely worth a visit. But if you're solely chasing the absolute best udon flavor and texture, there are many other fantastic options in Tokyo that might hit the mark even better. This was my honest review after a 40-minute wait for the signature dish at Godaime Hanayama Udon Ginza, a popular Tokyo udon spot.
