The Hampyeong Catholic Church, formerly known as Hampyeong Cathedral, began construction in 1949. However, it was tragically destroyed during the Korean War. With crucial support from a papal envoy who visited in 1951, reconstruction efforts began anew, culminating in its completion in 1952.
The church's design thoughtfully separated its functions: the first floor was dedicated to educational and social activities, while the second floor provided a serene space for Mass. The main sanctuary, designed in an auditorium style, is notably characterized by its distinctive octagonal bell tower rising prominently from the center of its facade.

Inside Hampyeong Cathedral
Since it was outside of Mass hours, I took the opportunity to capture the serene interior.
You'll also find a spacious lawn area, which beautifully hosts the Stations of the Cross.
These Stations of the Cross offer a unique perspective, unlike any I've seen elsewhere.
After paying my respects at the statue of the Virgin Mary, I headed towards the old Hampyeong Cathedral.

Construction of the Old Hampyeong Catholic Church began in 1949 but was destroyed during the Korean War. Subsequently, with the support of a correctional mission, construction resumed in 1951 and was completed in 1952.

Hampyeong Catholic Church (Old Hampyeong Catholic Church) was designated as a National Registered Heritage on December 31, 2004. In the same year, it was also designated as Registered Cultural Heritage No. 117.
Currently, Sunday masses at Hampyeong Catholic Church are held on Saturdays at 7:30 PM, and on Sundays at 6:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Weekday masses are held on Mondays at 6:30 AM, Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:30 PM, and Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 AM. Outside the church, there is a spacious lawn plaza and a unique Way of the Cross that cannot be seen elsewhere.
