✅ It gets quite windy near the Red Brick Warehouses!
✅ Lucky Pierrot Burger is super famous (expect long queues!)
✅ It's about a 10-minute walk from the tram stop.
✅ Most shops inside close around 5-6 PM, so plan accordingly.
1. Riding the Hakodate City Tram
As I've mentioned before, Hakodate might be a small city, but it's packed with incredible places to explore. Luckily, its efficient tram system makes getting around a breeze. With a little walking between stops, you can easily navigate the entire city center.

I spent an entire day exploring Hakodate on foot, relying solely on this charming red tram.

I spotted these adorable statues along the tram route – they really add to the city's unique character.

While you can purchase a one-day pass directly from the driver on your first ride, if you plan to visit multiple attractions, consider a city pass that covers various modes of transport.

2. Hakodate's Scenic Bay Views
My tram journey eventually led me towards the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses.
Hakodate, nestled in southern Hokkaido, is a historic port city, one of Japan's first to open to international trade alongside Yokohama and Nagasaki. This rich history means you'll find a delightful array of old Western-style buildings, making it a feast for the eyes.

The buildings along the way, with their unique colors and classic Western designs, were absolutely charming.

Since the Akarenga district is right by the water, you're treated to magnificent sea views as you stroll through the area.
3. Hakodate Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses
"Akarenga" literally means "red brick," and you'll often find these distinctive buildings in Japanese port cities. They typically feature Western-style red brick architecture, reflecting the era when Western influences first arrived in Japan. What were once old warehouses have now been transformed into vibrant cultural spaces.

Hakodate is one such port city proud to host its own Akarenga district. I arrived around 5 PM and had a fantastic time shopping and exploring inside. Just remember that many of the shops tend to close early, so it's a good idea to arrive a bit earlier to make the most of your visit.

And of course, the famous Lucky Pierrot in Hakodate!

This is Hakodate's beloved local burger chain. It's conveniently located right in front of the Akarenga Warehouses, making it a perfect stop.

However, be warned – the wait here can be absolutely insane! I saw the incredibly long line and decided to skip it this time. But if you do manage to go, I highly recommend trying their signature Chinese Chicken Burger!
Tips for Your Visit
1. Use the tram to get to Akarenga (consider a city pass).
2. Hakodate is a port city – don't miss the beautiful bay views on your way to Akarenga!
3. Shops inside Akarenga close around 5 PM, so go early to explore fully.
