1. Where to Pick Up Your Hakodate City Pass
If you are planning a self-guided adventure around Hakodate, having a reliable transit pass is an absolute game-changer. The local buses and trams are the best ways to get around, which led me to discover the incredibly convenient Hakodate City Pass.
For only about ~$19, this pass bundles unlimited tram rides with admission points to the city's most famous landmarks. It is the ultimate budget-friendly combo for exploring Hakodate!

After purchasing my pass online, I headed straight to JR Hakodate Station. When you are facing the main entrance of the station, the Travel Information Center is located right on the right-hand side.

I simply showed my booking QR code and confirmation details to the staff, and they handed me a handy little booklet filled with point coupons.

Once I had my booklet, I noticed the JR Hakodate commemorative stamp station nearby. Naturally, I had to leave a stamp in my new booklet as a souvenir!

These adorable stamps feature all the local highlights. It added a lovely touch of old-school analog charm to the start of my journey.

2. How to Use the Hakodate City Pass on the Tram
At the very top of the booklet page, you will find a detachable transit voucher.
When you board the tram, simply tear this voucher off and hand it to the driver.

In return, the driver will give you a calendar-style scratch card. This ticket lets you scratch off the exact year, month, and day of your ride—almost like a scratch-off lottery ticket!

Every time you hop on or off the tram for the rest of the day, just show this scratched calendar ticket to the driver to ride completely free of charge.
3. Visiting Goryokaku Tower and Mt. Hakodate Ropeway
While the pass offers entry to several locations, Goryokaku Tower and the Mount Hakodate Ropeway are absolute non-negotiables!
During the day, head up to the Goryokaku Tower observatory to marvel at the massive, star-shaped historic fort below. (If you visit during spring, the entire star glows with pink cherry blossoms!)

When night falls, take the Mount Hakodate Ropeway up the mountain to witness one of Japan's top three most spectacular night views—a glittering jewel box of city lights framed by twin bays.

Entering Goryokaku Tower requires 4 points from your booklet. Because the pass gives you total flexibility, you can customize your itinerary and spend your points exactly where you want.
If you are planning a self-guided trip to Hakodate, I highly recommend picking up this pass to save both time and money.
