On my way back to Tongyeong after a visit to Yeonggwang, I felt like my trip wouldn't be complete without one more stop.
I started looking for interesting places along the route, and that's when I discovered Gurye has become a hot spot for day trips!
I couldn't explore everything, so I focused on Gurye Sasongam Temple. What really drew me in was hearing about the 'Wish Rock,' a special boulder said to grant one heartfelt wish. I just had to see it for myself!

Sasongam is a remarkable temple perched on the cliffs of Osan Mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Seomjingang River and the expansive Gurye plains.
Getting There
It seemed a bit challenging to visit Sasongam without a car. If you're driving, you can park your car in the designated parking lot and then walk for about 10 minutes to reach the temple. The parking is free, which is a nice bonus!
For those relying on public transportation, a local village bus is also an option.

Right next to the village bus stop, you'll find the Seomjingang Skybike ticket office. If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to check it out! I personally skipped it because I'm not a fan of heights 🥲
Even in June, with temperatures hovering around 86°F, the steep incline was quite a challenge. Comfortable walking shoes are definitely a must!
As I ascended, the stunning views of the temple nestled on the cliffside quickly made me forget how tired I was. It's funny, a few years ago I might have questioned why anyone would hike to a place like this. But now, I find such peace just gazing at the lush, green natural scenery. It's truly rejuvenating.
Exploring Sasongam Temple
Upon reaching the top, the temple grounds branched off to the left and right.
I decided to head left first, towards Naahanjeon Hall and the famous Wish Rock.
After a climb of just about 3 minutes, the Wish Rock came into view. This rock, said to resemble a Buddha, is believed to grant one wish to those who pray here.
You can purchase wish slips near the stairs before you ascend, or even at the top via a digital payment method. I wrote down my wish and hung it on the designated ropes. Fingers crossed it comes true! 🙏
Next to the Wish Rock is Naahanjeon Hall. Though the climb was hot, a gentle breeze swept through this high-altitude spot, making it quite pleasant.
From here, you get a full view of Jirisan Mountain and the winding Seomjingang River. The scenery was so captivating that I immediately thought about returning for a temple stay to witness a sunrise or sunset from this very spot.
This is the view of the Seomjingang River and Gurye town from the Prostration Stone (Baeryeseok). Despite the intense sunshine, the beautiful vista kept me mesmerized for a long time.
Next, I made my way to Yaksa-jeon Hall. This is where you'll find the Ma-ae-yeorae-ipsang, a standing Buddha statue carved into the rock, famously attributed to the ancient monk Wonhyo, who supposedly drew it with his fingernail. While I'm not a Buddhist myself and don't fully understand all the intricacies, I was determined to see it!
Similar to Naahanjeon, getting to Yaksa-jeon involves climbing a series of steep stone steps. It made me think that it might be a bit challenging for older visitors or those with knee problems 🥲
The interior of Sasongam was quite crowded, so I wasn't able to take photos and simply took in the sights with my eyes. The views overlooking the landscape from Sasongam were truly magnificent.
After exploring, I descended back to the parking lot. There are no vendors selling drinks or snacks at the top of the temple, so be sure to grab a drink or an ice cream from the shop located just below the parking lot before or after your climb!
During my visit, the restrooms within the temple grounds were under construction, but there was a clean and modern restroom available right in front of the shop. I was a bit worried about bugs since it's in the mountains, but it was spotless, so no worries there!
If you're looking for a unique day trip in Gurye or exploring places to visit in Jeollanam-do, I highly recommend Gurye Sasongam. With free admission and parking, it's an accessible and truly rewarding experience!
Saseongam Hermitage in Gurye has no entrance fees or parking fees. The estimated time required for a visit varies by individual, but you can expect it to take about 40 minutes to 1 hour.
Saseongam is accessible by village bus. The boarding location is the Saseongam Village Bus Ticket Office (67, Jugyeon 1-gil, Muncheok-myeon, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do). The round-trip village bus fare is ~$2 for adults and ~$2 for children.
The Wish Rock is visible about 3 minutes up the path on the left, towards Nahanjeon Hall. Wish papers can be purchased next to the stairs before ascending, or via bank transfer after arriving.
No drinks or food are sold at the top of Saseongam Hermitage. You can purchase drinks and ice cream at the store just below the parking lot. At the time of visit, the restrooms within the temple grounds were under construction, and a new modern restroom was available in front of the store.
