The Gurye Sansuyu Festival is celebrating its 27th year, a testament to its enduring charm as a beloved spring flower festival!
Centered around vast clusters of sansuyu trees, with a delightful route winding through the local villages, this festival is truly expanding its enchanting scale!
After soaking in the beauty of the Gwangyang Maehwa Festival in Jeonnam, I made a spontaneous stop at the Gurye Sansuyu Festival on my way back – a perfect two-for-one adventure!
I visited when the Gurye Sansuyu Festival was in full bloom, and it was absolutely buzzing! A truly vibrant scene with countless blossoms and enthusiastic visitors.
With a lively stage set up right at the sansuyu festival grounds, the atmosphere was absolutely electric – you could truly feel the festive spirit!
The Sansuyu Festival seems to be growing year by year, evident from the sheer number of vibrant tents everywhere!
These tents were a treasure trove, offering Gurye's special products, delicious local foods, and even sansuyu makgeolli! It was all so well-organized for visitors to savor and enjoy, which is probably why we saw so many bus tourists – a fantastic setup for a day trip!

Since I'd traveled all the way to Jeonnam for March's spectacular spring blossoms, I made sure to check the Sansuyu Flower Festival guide map at least once. It's truly the best way to fully immerse yourself and enjoy every corner of this beautiful event!
The Gurye Sansuyu Festival spans a vast area, from its entrance all the way up to the charming upper villages. Given its size, I decided to focus on the spots that called to me most!
Thanks to the Jeonnam Gurye bus tour, our wonderful driver knew exactly where to drop us off, making it incredibly easy to immerse ourselves in the Gurye Sansuyu Festival!
To welcome visitors, a variety of charming installations have been set up, and there's even a special spot where couples can hang 'love locks' – how romantic!
When I visited on Tuesday, March 17th, the bloom rate was a bit lower than I'd hoped, so I didn't quite get to see the sansuyu at its most breathtaking. It left me with a tiny pang of longing for its full glory!
While the plum blossoms were absolutely abundant on the same day, it seemed the sansuyu needed just a few more days to truly burst into their vibrant splendor!
Still, I found some lovely spots where the sansuyu had bloomed beautifully, and I happily spent my time capturing their vibrant charm with my camera!
Even other visitors I encountered were remarking on the slightly lower bloom rate, sharing in that little bit of wistful longing for peak blossoms.
Why did it take me so long to discover the magnificent spring blooms of Jeonnam? It's quite a journey, which is why I haven't visited often, but this day trip — exploring both the Gwangyang Maehwa Festival and the Gurye Sansuyu Festival — was simply phenomenal! I'm already dreaming of doing it again.
The Gurye Sansuyu Festival grounds were wonderfully clean and organized, and with such beautiful weather during my visit, it was absolutely perfect for a leisurely stroll!
Our guide recommended visiting the newly created Sansuyu Love Park, too,
so I went, and it seemed really well designed!
On the way up to Love Park, the pinwheels were also
spinning vigorously!
The park was beautifully designed with various themes,
including a Proposal Zone, Gate of Promise, Love Maru, and Flower Wall Path,
all inspired by the sansuyu flower's meaning of eternal and immortal love.
Oh, and the enormous sansuyu sculpture was stunning too!
Walking a bit further from Love Park,
I discovered a pavilion and decided to check it out.
Our guide had mentioned that the view of
Sandong-myeon, Gurye, from up at the pavilion would be absolutely gorgeous!
Sandong-myeon in Gurye boasts many newly created parks.
There's even a 'Maze Park' where you can see the entire maze
from the pavilion!
What was particularly lovely were the distant sansuyu trees, all dyed in yellow,
incredibly beautiful. It was just a tiny bit disappointing that they hadn't fully bloomed yet in the main festival area. :D
On my way down from the Gurye Sansuyu Festival pavilion,
I just had to snap a photo in front of these yellow pinwheels and some lovely yellow flowers – not forsythia, but equally charming! :D
I think I finally understood why people travel from far and wide
to experience the spring flower viewing in Jeonnam, after visiting
both the Gwangyang Maehwa (Plum Blossom) Festival and the Sansuyu Festival this time.
While Gurye, Jeonnam, might seem a bit far, if you take a tour bus,
you'll get to see so many beautiful flowers and enjoy a comfortable trip.
I highly recommend visiting with your parents!
I went with my mother, and honestly,
if it weren't for an opportunity like this, who knows when I would have made it all the way to Jeonnam?

Upon visiting on Tuesday, March 17, the Sansuyu blooming rate was lower than expected, leaving a sense of regret as the beautiful Sansuyu blossoms could not be fully enjoyed. It was mentioned that while Gwangyang plum blossoms were in full bloom on the same day, the Sansuyu would likely need a few more days.
At the tents in the festival venue, visitors could taste and enjoy Gurye local specialties, various foods, and Sansuyu makgeolli (rice wine). Thanks to these facilities, many bus tourists visited.
The newly created Sansuyu Love Park features various themed facilities inspired by the Sansuyu flower's meaning of 'eternal and immortal love,' such as a Proposal Zone, Gate of Promise, Love Maru (deck/platform), and Flower Wall Path. Additionally, a large Sansuyu sculpture is beautifully arranged.
