Known as one of the top 5 bakeries in the nation,
I visited Gungjeon Bakery.

📍 Gungjeon Bakery Jinwol Branch
701 Seomun-daero, Nam-gu, Gwangju, Gwangju Metropolitan City
Opened in 1973, Gungjeon Bakery is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year,
and is a representative bakery in Gwangju, passed down through three generations.

Gungjeon Bakery has
several branches in Gwangju.
There are a total of 7 directly managed stores.
The one I visited was the Gungjeon Bakery Jinwol Branch.
It's close to my home, so I come here sometimes.

The main branch of Gungjeon Bakery
is located in Chungjang-ro,
downtown Gwangju.
It's my friend's store.

It was morning, so they were busy
baking bread.
Right by the entrance, the Butterfly Pie
was the first thing that caught my eye.

Trays and tongs were ready
for selecting bread.

Garlic Baguette and Sweet Jjondeugi Bread

Squid Ink UFO Bread, Corn Cheese Hotdog

This month's new product, Garlic Naan, is available.

There's an Egg Panini, and because it's the Jinwol branch,
they have the Jinwol Hotdog.

I went ahead and picked the Jinwol Hotdog.

Angel Chiffon and Sweet Pumpkin Chiffon.
They look so soft just by looking at them.

Soboro (Korean streusel bread) and Madeleines, along with some gift-ready products,
were also displayed.

There were sandwiches too, but
Gungjeon Bakery's signature item,
the 'Dinosaur Egg' (Gongnyong-al) was nowhere to be seen.

Feeling a bit disappointed, I at least took a photo.
When I asked a staff member, they said it comes out after 12 PM.
You can't buy it in the morning.

Croquettes and Chewy Donuts (Chaldonut)

My absolute favorite, and one I almost always grab,
is the Dr. Shrimp bread.
It gives off a shrimp burger vibe,
but it has a distinct feel from a typical hamburger,
featuring unique bread and fillings.
Seriously, it's one of my personal favorite breads!

You'll also spot classic Salt Bread and
the impressive Mammoth Bread on display.

The Butterfly Pie (Nabipie) is a true delight, offering a perfect blend of crispiness and softness
that you can savor all at once. It's one of Gungjeon Bakery's
signature menus.
I hear it's even possible to order it
online.

Sweet treats like Honey Bread, and the playfully named 'Masitjilong' Sausage Bread (which means 'Delicious'!) are also tempting.

Croffles and scones are also available.
Even though it was early morning and not all the breads had been put out yet,
there was still a wide variety of delicious breads.

You'll find delightful Twisted Soboro Bread and chewy Glutinous Rice Twists (Kkwabaegi)
also on display.
Mellow Trip's Sweet Conclusion
Gungjeon Bakery truly stands out as one of Korea's Top 5 Bakeries —
a legendary 'bread heaven' that any bread aficionado simply must experience.
Their Dinosaur Egg Bread and Butterfly Pie are
their signature items!
With several direct branches conveniently located around Gwangju,
if you ever find yourself visiting,
I highly recommend popping in to explore the incredible variety of baked goods,
enjoy some free samples, and grab their iconic signature breads
as a wonderful souvenir or gift for loved ones.
