I'll walk you through how to get to First—one of Grindelwald's absolute must-visit spots—

as well as the hike to Lake Bachalpsee

and all the exciting activities you can try!

Grindelwald First

While the Jungfraujoch is famous in Grindelwald,

First is the ultimate peak in the Jungfrau region

for pure adventure and stunning viewpoints.

From Trottibikes and gliders to gorgeous hikes, you can easily

spend a whole action-packed day here!

How to Get to First

To head up to First, you'll first need to make your way to

the First Gondola Station in Grindelwald!

How to Get to Grindelwald, Firstbahn

▪️ A 15-minute walk from Grindelwald Station ▪️ Bus: Lines 121 / 122 / 123 → Free ride with a Swiss Travel Pass or Jungfrau VIP Pass

To get to First, you'll ride a scenic gondola all the way up.

Lake Bachalpsee in First

The hike from First to Lake Bachalpsee

takes about an hour each way.

There are more uphill sections than you might think, so make sure to bring:

▪️ Comfortable sneakers/hiking shoes

▪️ Water (an absolute must!)

▪️ Bread or snacks to enjoy by Lake Bachalpsee

Personally, the view at the lake is so breathtaking

that besides the activities, the Lake Bachalpsee hike

is something I highly, highly recommend! *,*

Grindelwald First Cliff Walk

As soon as you step off the First Gondola, you'll see

the Cliff Walk right in front of you.

In short, it's a walkway built right on the cliff!

At about 2,167 meters above sea level, you walk along the edge of the cliff

and take in the Alps up close—such a spectacular spot! *,*

Best of all, it's completely free to access,

so it's a must-visit highlight if you've made it up to First.

Make sure to walk all the way to the end, where there's a viewing platform

👉 jutting out into the open—this is the ultimate photo zone, so snapping a picture here is a must!

First Adventure Activities

When going up from Grindelwald to First,

you will pass through two intermediate stations:

Grindelwald → Bort → Schreckfeld → First

There are four main adventure activities spread across these sections:

✅ First Flyer / First Glider / Mountain Cart / Trottibike

for a total of four incredible rides!

You can take the gondola up to First and ride back down to the station

where your desired activity starts.

In my case, I only did the Trottibike ride:

1️⃣ Took the gondola from First down to Bort

2️⃣ Got off at Bort station

3️⃣ Rode the Trottibike all the way down to Grindelwald

Please note that all activities operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Since reservations aren't allowed, the highly popular First Flyer and

First Glider tend to ⚠️ close early for the day! 😭

On the bright side, the Trottibike doesn't sell out as fast,

so you can pretty much hop on it anytime!

Grindelwald Trottibike

Safety first!

Wearing a helmet is absolutely mandatory!

They look like kick scooters but ride a bit differently, so start slow to get the hang of it!

⚠️ Beware of loose pants!

I was wearing loose jogger pants,

and they got caught in the wheel... I was so shocked! 😳

🚨 Please avoid wide-leg pants or long skirts!

And when you ride the Trottibike, don't just rush down—

be sure to take in the scenery as you ride!

It is seriously stunningly beautiful 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Since the course winds all the way down to Grindelwald, taking it slow

feels completely stress-free and enjoyable!

Checking the Grindelwald Weather

If it's even slightly cloudy, the breathtaking Alpine views at First

might get completely hidden.

Since activities can be suspended due to strong winds or rain, I highly recommend checking the live webcam before you head up!
