As my European adventure drew to a close, Munich was my final stop. With my flight departing from Frankfurt, I had to figure out the best way to get from one city to the other.
How to travel efficiently from Munich to Frankfurt Airport?
After weighing several options, booking a German train ticket seemed like the smartest choice.
Ultimately, I opted for a First Class ticket on Germany's ICE train, and I can confidently say it was a fantastic decision!
1. From Munich to Frankfurt Airport: The Smart Way to Travel
When exploring Europe, the comfort and convenience of train travel are undeniable. Germany's ICE trains, in particular, are renowned for their punctuality, cleanliness, and excellent connectivity.

For the journey from Munich to Frankfurt, driving would take approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes. By contrast, the train journey is about 3 hours and 20 minutes, making it the clear winner for speed and ease.
You can travel directly from Munich Central Station to Frankfurt Airport Station, which means fewer transfers and less stress. Unlike flights, major delays are quite rare with the ICE.
While connecting routes are available, knowing I’d be tired at the tail end of my trip, I prioritized comfort and quiet. That's why I booked a First Class (or Comfort Class) ticket.

One crucial tip: German train prices fluctuate significantly. Booking in advance can save you a considerable amount. If you wait until the last minute, you might pay a premium or even find tickets sold out, especially during peak seasons!

2. My First Class ICE Train Experience
My accommodation was literally a 30-second walk from Munich Central Station, which made boarding the train on time completely stress-free.

The First Class carriage was incredibly quiet and spacious. The generous legroom allowed me to comfortably work on my laptop, organizing photos, and simply relax while enjoying the changing scenery outside.

While you can order food using a QR code, I unfortunately tried to place an order too close to my arrival time and was told it wasn't possible. However, the overall ambiance and cleanliness of the carriage were excellent (the restrooms were spotless too!).
Most importantly, choosing a direct route meant I arrived exactly on time, without any delays.
Even with Germany's reputation for punctuality, it's always wise to book your train with plenty of buffer time before your flight, just in case of unforeseen circumstances.
I didn't pre-select a seat when booking, so I simply found an empty one. (Seats with destination information displayed above them are already reserved.) A conductor checked my ticket, and then my destination was displayed above my seat, indicating it was now reserved for my journey.

The seats even offered wireless charging for devices, adding to the overall convenience and modern feel of the First Class experience.

3. First Class vs. Second Class: Which to Choose?
Germany's ICE trains offer both First Class (Comfort Class) and Second Class (Standard Class) options.
First Class provides more space and a quieter environment, making it ideal for longer journeys, or when you're feeling tired at the end of a trip and need to unwind.

However, for a journey of around 3 hours, Second Class is perfectly comfortable and a perfectly viable option. Your choice ultimately depends on your budget and how much extra comfort you desire.

4. Pricing Overview (as of February 2026)
Based on a check for a weekday morning in February 2026, here's a comparison of German train ticket prices:
Category | Trip.com | German Rail (English) |
First Class Fare | ~$69~ | ~$70~ |
Second Class Fare | ~$50~ | ~$51~ |
*Prices are per adult for non-refundable tickets.

While German Rail sometimes offers a 5% discount coupon, Trip.com often comes out cheaper due to their lack of a separate processing fee. I personally booked through Trip.com and had a smooth, hassle-free reservation process.

5. Essential Tips for Booking Your German Train
✅ Book in Advance: During peak season, same-day tickets are often scarce or significantly more expensive.
✅ Opt for Direct Routes: Connecting routes, while sometimes cheaper, carry a higher risk of delays.
✅ Allow Ample Time for Flights: Always factor in extra time at the airport, even if your train is punctual. Better to wait comfortably than rush!
✅ Consider Meal Times for QR Ordering: If you plan to order food onboard, do so well before your arrival time.
If you want to relax before your flight, First Class is your go-to. If you're looking to save a bit, Second Class is perfectly adequate. Keeping these points in mind will make your decision much easier!

Wrapping up my German trip with a comfortable First Class ICE train journey made the final leg of my travels incredibly relaxing. The journey to the airport can often feel hectic, but the ICE was so quiet and smooth that I was truly glad I chose the train.
Remember, train prices can change quickly, so don't hesitate! Book your tickets now to secure the best rates and ensure a stress-free departure.
