When we visited, the sky was filled with dramatic storm clouds. While it made for slightly moody photos, it was actually a blessing in disguise since it kept the summer heat down to a comfortable mid-70s Fahrenheit.

The statue rises dramatically out of the endless green grasslands. There are no other major developments nearby, which makes the monument stand out incredibly well against the horizon—perfect for epic travel photography.

Once inside the complex, you will find a spacious lobby complete with souvenir shops and a cozy cafe where you can take a quick break.

The gift shops offer a wide variety of authentic Mongolian souvenirs, including adorable felt camel plushies, high-quality cashmere products, and local crafts.

The cafe was quite popular! Since the weather outside was a bit overcast, many travelers preferred to relax indoors with a warm drink.

Exploring the B1 Exhibition Hall

The basement level houses a museum dedicated to the history of the Mongol Empire. You will find artifacts, archaeological discoveries, and statues of mythical guardian spirits that protected the ancient empire.

The museum showcases historical documents written in the traditional Mongolian script. Our guide mentioned that this ancient vertical script is rarely used in daily life today, making it even more fascinating to see up close.

As you walk through the exhibits, you will also spot beautiful bronze replicas of ancient horse archers.

The traditional vertical Mongolian script looks almost like beautiful, flowing art. It is incredible to think about the centuries of history preserved in these characters.

There is a massive map on display showing the sheer scale of the territories conquered during the Mongol Empire's peak. Seeing how far their reach extended—from East Asia all the way to Eastern Europe—really puts their historical power into perspective.

The exhibition also includes traditional pottery and ceramics. You can see the blend of various cultural influences that flowed along the Silk Road, combined with a distinct nomadic aesthetic.

Seeing the contrast between the heavy battle armor worn by warriors and the elegant, flowing silk robes of the royal court was fascinating. Some tours offer a traditional costume rental experience, though our specific package did not include it—definitely something to look out for if you want a fun photo op!

Overall, the museum is very well-curated with clear displays that make it easy to learn about the lifestyle of ancient nomadic empires.

We also got to see some traditional Mongolian games. On the left is a unique Mongolian chess set (Shatar), which features distinct nomadic pieces. On the right is "Shagai"—a traditional game played using sheep knucklebones. You can even buy your own Shagai set at the gift shop!

These are imperial seals used by the Khans to sign official decrees and treaties across the empire.

To get to the highlight of the complex—the observation deck on top of the horse's head—you take an elevator up to the second floor. From there, you must climb a narrow flight of stairs to the very top. It can get a bit crowded and tight, so those with limited mobility should take extra care.

If you are heading to Mongolia, this iconic landmark is a non-negotiable stop. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking!
