Discover Dwaejijumeokgisa Sikdang, Gapyeong's beloved local spot for authentic spicy pork jumeok. Experience a true 'Driver's Restaurant' gem near Jaraseom Island, offering hearty meals and a taste of real Korean culture.
I’m a huge fan of local eateries, especially those old, established spots known as ‘nopojip’ in Korea! There's something special about finding a place that has stood the test of time, serving generations of hungry locals.
And if a restaurant's sign says 'Kisa Sikdang' (Driver's Restaurant), that’s my cue to walk right in, no questions asked! These places are famous for their hearty, affordable, and incredibly delicious meals – a true testament to good, honest cooking.
This particular spot is also a long-time favorite of my in-laws, so you know it’s legit!
The menu here is refreshingly simple: just one item – Dwaeji Jumeok (Spicy Stir-fried Pork). Doesn't that single-item focus just scream 'authentic Gapyeong local gem' to you? ☺️
It’s priced at ~$9 per person, and you just order for the number of people in your party! We were four, so we ordered four servings.
The side dishes are always the same, according to my father-in-law! They're neatly arranged, and I particularly loved the crispy, sweet, and savory tofu gangjeong next to the dried anchovies.
They also provide a generous amount of fresh lettuce for wraps, and you can always ask for more if you need it. After all, wrapping your jumeok in fresh greens is the best way to enjoy it! ‼️
And finally, here’s the star of the show: Dwaeji Jumeok!
Served generously on a large foil-lined grill, the sight and sound of the pork sizzling in its vibrant red sauce are truly a work of art. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! 🤤
The best part is that you cook it right at your table, stirring it as it cooks, ensuring every last bite stays warm and delicious.
The spicy and sweet aroma wafts through the air, making my stomach rumble with anticipation – I might be exaggerating a little, but it really does make your mouth water!
The perks of being a regular… they always give us a little extra meat!
Once the pork was perfectly cooked, I picked up a generous piece and placed it over a spoonful of fluffy white rice.
The golden ratio of chewy fat and tender lean meat meant every bite was packed with rich, savory flavor. So good! Haha!
For me, this garlic is the absolute kick. The garlic mixed with the sauce is so addictive, you just can't stop reaching for it!
Spread a fresh lettuce leaf in your hand, add a spoonful of rice, pile on plenty of that perfectly cooked pork, then top it with crunchy bean sprouts and this amazing garlic sauce. Wrap it all up for one epic bite – it's absolutely phenomenal!
The pungent yet deeply savory garlic really cuts through the richness of the pork, balancing everything out beautifully.
When things get a little spicy, a classic bottle of Coke is the perfect palate cleanser. It’s rare to find places that still serve Coke in glass bottles these days, but I definitely prefer it!
While they don't have a separate fried rice menu here, the portions of pork are so generous, and eating it with rice in lettuce wraps is so satisfying, you'll easily finish a bowl of rice and feel completely full, without even thinking about fried rice!
The jumeok sauce itself is so rich and flavorful that even after the pork is gone, simply mixing the leftover sauce with plain white rice makes for a perfectly hearty and complete end to your meal.
If you’re exploring Gapyeong, whether it’s Jaraseom Island or Nami Island, and you're looking for a delicious, generously portioned, and affordable meal, I wholeheartedly recommend Dwaejijumeokgisa Sikdang! 👍😊
