Today, I'm excited to share my experience from a trip to Kyoto, visiting

the legendary Fox Shrine, Fushimi Inari Taisha.

From Kyoto Kawaramachi,

I'll guide you on how to get to the Fox Shrine,

and even share some tips for planning your travel itinerary.

🚆 Getting to Fushimi Inari Shrine from Kyoto Kawaramachi

The most convenient route is

Keihan Gion-Shijo Station → Fushimi Inari Station

It was super easy because you don't need to transfer!

The journey takes about 20-25 minutes,

and the fare was around 300 yen.

Once you exit Fushimi Inari Station,

you'll immediately see the vibrant red Torii gate entrance,

making it incredibly easy to find your way.

Kyoto Travel: Transportation Costs

During our Kyoto trip,

we used an ICOCA transportation card that we recharged.

We visited 2-3 tourist spots per day,

and the daily transportation cost per person was approximately ~$7.

Keep this in mind when planning your budget!

⛩️ The Scenery of Fushimi Inari Fox Shrine

The countless Torii gates stretching from the entrance

created an truly awe-inspiring atmosphere.

By visiting early in the morning,

we were able to explore relatively peacefully.

When we left around noon, it was noticeably much more crowded.

The Fox Shrine is larger than you might expect,

and the walking path is quite long.

The fox statues are considered messengers of Inari Okami, the deity enshrined here.

They are uniquely characterized by holding a key or a jewel in their mouths.

Each one has a different expression, making them fascinating to observe.

🌿 Fushimi Inari Walking Course & Tips

As you ascend further into the shrine,

the entire mountain becomes a single pilgrimage route.

Reaching the summit takes about 2 hours.

If you're short on time,

even just climbing up to Okusha

offers a wonderful atmosphere and views overlooking Kyoto city.

We also didn't go all the way to the summit;

we only went halfway up and then descended.

It felt like we had seen plenty and had a complete experience.

On the way down, there were souvenir shops scattered along the path,

keeping things interesting.

🧭 Travel Tips

🟡 Highly recommend visiting before 8 AM!

Fewer crowds mean more beautiful photos.

We arrived around 8:30 AM,

and it was clear that the morning offers a much more relaxed experience.

When we left, it was incredibly crowded.

🟡 Comfortable shoes are a must! (There are many stairs and it's quite steep)

🟡 Near the entrance, there are many great restaurants and shops selling fox-themed souvenirs!

On the way down, I also got my fox fortune told,

and it turned out to be really good, which made me so happy! : )

Before leaving, at the souvenir shop,

I found a beautiful fox magnet and just had to buy one.

Fushimi Inari → Uji → Gion or Kawaramachi

Start your day early exploring Fushimi Inari Shrine,

then head over to Uji for some delightful Uji matcha desserts at a cafe,

and in the evening, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Gion.

It's the perfect way to wrap up your day!

Fushimi Inari → Kiyomizu-dera Temple

After an early morning visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine,

take a short break at a cafe,

then head over to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera Temple aren't too far from each other,

so this itinerary works out quite well.

<Pro Tip for Getting to Kiyomizu-dera Temple>

Be aware, Kiyomizu-dera Temple can get incredibly crowded.

However, there's a lesser-known shortcut!

The main road leading up to Kiyomizu-dera Temple

is usually packed with people, so you might find yourself queuing.

The trick to avoid the crowds is to take the path just below the main road.

Using Gojo Street as a reference point,

the sky-blue path where Donguri Republic (Ghibli store) is located

is the main road most people use.

Instead, use the yellow path directly below it

to get around.

Fushimi Inari → Kiyomizu-dera Temple

→ Kinkaku-ji Temple → Arashiyama

You can explore all of these in one day

by taking a bus tour.

✨ My Impressions

Fushimi Inari, with its countless vibrant red torii gates,

offered a truly unique and exotic landscape.

Visiting on a beautiful sunny morning,

the sunlight filtering through the torii gates was simply stunning,

and with a manageable number of people,

it was perfect for taking photos.

While I'd seen this scenery countless times in travel videos,

walking through the torii gates myself felt like a completely different experience.

On the back of the torii gates, there are countless small prayer tablets

covered in people's wishes.

From the direction you walk, however,

you can't see these wishes.

Apparently, the reason for this is that the gods (?)

view the wishes from the opposite direction.

Thinking about it that way felt a little eerie.

It felt like I shouldn't be looking at people's wishes, haha.

I also had a fleeting, slightly 'capitalistic' thought...

'How much would one pillar cost?' lol.

I went up a good distance and then came back down from the middle.

On the way, the fox figurines were incredibly cute,

and buying the fox fortune was a lot of fun.

If you visit the Fox Shrine, definitely try getting a fox fortune told! :)

As you make your way back down, you'll find charming souvenir shops and cozy cafes.

If you have some extra time, I'd definitely recommend popping in!
