My Personal Review of Europe's Best Christmas Markets

Even though it's still warm outside, if you're dreaming of experiencing the magic of Europe's Christmas markets this winter, now is the perfect time to start planning! These enchanting markets typically kick off in mid-November and run through around December 24th. Booking your flights about three months in advance, like right now in August 2026, is ideal to secure the best prices. Plus, be aware that fuel surcharges are expected to increase starting in September!
If you're wondering which country to visit, let me share my personal experiences from some of the most captivating Christmas markets across Europe!
1. Germany's Christmas Markets
Germany is home to some of Europe's oldest and most iconic Christmas markets, with Dresden's Striezelmarkt often hailed as the most famous. It's so beautiful that after visiting Dresden on a winter trip to Eastern Europe, I was completely smitten! Last year, I returned to Germany specifically to explore more of its incredible Christmas markets.
Each city offers a unique atmosphere, making it feel like there's never enough time to see all the renowned markets. You'll want to soak in every moment!
I explored five different cities, and in terms of beauty, my personal ranking was Dresden, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Cologne, and Bamberg. Even if you're not planning a full German trip, Dresden is easily accessible as a day trip from Prague! If you're visiting Prague, definitely consider adding Dresden to your itinerary.
For winter flights to Germany, departing in late November or early December, direct flights typically range from ~$828 to ~$966, while connecting flights can be found for around ~$621. These are quite reasonable fares for a long-haul route!

2. Austria's Christmas Markets
Austria's Christmas markets are also incredibly famous, and among them, the one at Vienna City Hall (Rathausplatz) truly stands out in my memory.
It boasts the largest scale and the most picturesque setting. If you can only visit one, Vienna City Hall is an absolute must-see! With horse-drawn carriages and red trams passing by, a charming carousel, a Ferris wheel, and even an ice rink, it's a fantastic spot for families to visit and create lasting memories.
In fact, Vienna's streets transform into markets everywhere you look. Just strolling through the squares in front of Belvedere Palace, St. Charles Church (Karlskirche), or the Museum of Art History will immerse you in the vibrant Christmas spirit.
Salzburg also features a large market square filled with delightful things to see, from charming trinkets to a wide array of delicious foods. When I visited, it was snowing, and standing there felt like stepping into a fairytale. It was such a heartwarming experience, making it one of my favorite places!
For Vienna flights in late November to early December, one-stop flights typically cost around ~$552 to ~$621, while direct flights are quite affordable at about ~$897.

3. Czech Republic's Christmas Markets
For those with shorter travel periods, I highly recommend visiting the Prague Christmas markets in the Czech Republic.
The Old Town is compact and easy to explore, and the relatively affordable prices combined with delicious local beer are unbeatable! You can comfortably visit for as little as 5-7 days. During this time, you can even squeeze in a day trip to the charming nearby town of Cesky Krumlov for an even richer experience.
For flights to Prague, Czech Republic, departing in late November to early December, one-stop flights are around ~$621, and direct flights range from ~$897 to ~$1,035!

4. Winter Europe Flight Booking Tips

With fuel surcharges expected to rise from September, if you're planning a winter trip to Europe, make sure to book your flights well in advance!
The oldest Christmas market in Europe is Dresden's Striezelmarkt. This Dresden market can be visited as a day trip from Prague.
The market the author mentioned as the most memorable is the Vienna City Hall Christmas Market. It is the largest in scale, boasts beautiful scenery, and features various attractions such as horse-drawn carriages, red trams, carousels, a Ferris wheel, and an ice rink.
The Prague Christmas market is recommended because its Old Town is not too large, making it easy to explore. The prices are affordable, and you can enjoy delicious beer. For a short trip, you can visit Prague and the nearby Český Krumlov within about 5 to 7 days.
