Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Eikando Temple, renowned as Kyoto's most spectacular spot for autumn leaves 🍁

Getting to Eikando from Kyoto Station

Eikando is situated a little distance from Kyoto's city center, but it's easily accessible.

- By Subway -

(Travel time: approximately 30 minutes)

Take the Tozai Line from Kyoto Station and alight at Keage Station. From there, it's about a 10-minute walk to the temple.

- By Bus -

(Travel time: approximately 45 minutes)

You can also take a bus and get off at the 'Nanzenji-Eikandomichi' stop.

The walk to Eikando is a tranquil path. While it was lovely when we visited, in autumn, this walkway transforms into a healing journey, completely surrounded by vibrant fall foliage.

Eikando Temple: A Tapestry of Autumn Hues

Known as the 'Temple of Autumn Leaves,' Eikando is undeniably Kyoto's most celebrated destination for fall foliage.

From the moment you step through the entrance, you're greeted by a symphony of crimson maples. The entire area—around the pond, over the bridges, and along the staircases—is breathtakingly beautiful, like walking through a living postcard.

My absolute favorite view was the reflection of the vibrant garden in the tranquil pond.

It's stunning from the bridges, but when the maples are in full color, it's truly magical. If you're visiting Kyoto in the fall, Eikando is an absolute must-see.

During peak autumn foliage season, Eikando is incredibly popular, so expect queues. I recommend visiting early in the morning, or experiencing the truly magical night illumination around sunset.

A Stroll Along the Philosopher's Path

After exploring Eikando, the Philosopher's Path, leading towards Ginkakuji Temple, is an absolute must-do autumn walk.

This picturesque path, approximately 1.2 miles long, is a wonderful place for a stroll even outside of autumn, offering glimpses of Kyoto's scenery.

But in the fall, when the maples turn, the sight of gently falling leaves along the canal is said to be truly breathtaking.

Along the way, you'll find charming tea houses and souvenir shops, perfect for a short break or capturing that iconic Instagram-worthy shot.

Travel Tip: Recommended Itinerary with Eikando

Combine with other Kyoto gems!

For Eikando, the autumn colors appear even more vibrant in the afternoon sunlight than in the morning.

You can easily complete a day trip covering Kyoto Station, Eikando, the Philosopher's Path, and Ginkakuji.

Combining subway and walking not only saves on transportation costs but also allows you to fully immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of autumn in Kyoto.
