Don't waste your Dubai layover sitting at the airport. This expat-approved indoor itinerary shows you how to beat the heat and explore the city comfortably.
Planning a layover in Dubai?
Were you thinking of just sitting at the airport the whole time?
Actually, I lived in Dubai for several years!
So I know exactly what's worth doing,
what's a total skip, and all the little details haha
Plus, some major insider tips!

I'll give you the honest truth, not from a tourist's perspective,
but from someone who actually lived there!
I see so many travelers stopping by Dubai on their way to Europe,
or using it as a stepping stone to Mauritius!
If you're flying Emirates, a Dubai layover usually gives you anywhere from 6
to 12 hours of transit time,
and letting that time go to waste...
would be such a shame!

Dubai allows visa-free entry for many nationalities,
and the city center is only a 20 to 30-minute drive from the airport.
If you have enough transit time, you can make it incredibly packed with adventure!
But if you're stopping by during the peak of summer,
there's one thing you need to know.
Daytime temperatures easily soar past 40°C (104°F)! haha
Honestly, I don't even want to remember what the real feel temperature was...

Stepping outside during the day literally takes your breath away.
Back when I was living there, a friend stopped by for a quick layover
and said... haha... it felt like being underwater.
They asked how I could possibly live here...
And yes, it is incredibly humid and hot.
You basically feel like a dumpling inside a massive food steamer.
Even I struggled to adapt at first!
So if you're on a short layover, I highly recommend avoiding outdoor
activities during the day. T_T
(Uber works great here, so I highly recommend it)
(Careem cars sometimes have a smell that makes me motion sick)

Honestly, desert safaris and outdoor activities are out of the question
in the summer. haha
That's why today, I've curated a list of spots where you can fully enjoy Dubai
indoors, even during the scorching summer!

Recommended Itineraries by Layover Duration

Staying inside the airport
If your Dubai layover is on the shorter side,
it's actually much better to make the most of the airport lounges
rather than venturing out.
Dubai International Airport is super clean and absolutely massive!
Dubai International Airport Lounge access starts from ~$37,
and a shower room & sauna pass is around ~$17!
Showering and resting before or after a long-haul flight
completely changes your travel experience!

If you have 6 to 8 hours on your Emirates layover,
this is the perfect amount of time to head into the city.
① Burj Khalifa At the Top
The tallest building in the world!
Going all the way up is fully indoors,
so you don't have to worry about the heat at all.
That breathtaking feeling of having the entire Dubai skyline spread out beneath your feet...!
However, standard admission tickets usually come with incredibly long lines!
I hate waiting, so when I went with my sister,
we bought Fast Track tickets
to skip the lines completely~

making it fantastic value for money!
Plus, with instant confirmation, you can even book on the same day!

④ Dubai Frame
Half the height of Burj Khalifa, half the price!
The view is quite similar, and the entry ticket is only around ~$13,
making it the ultimate budget-friendly option! haha
If you're layover-ing in Dubai on your way to Europe and it's your first time,
starting right here is more than enough.
On one side, you see Old Dubai,
and on the other, Modern Dubai!
But honestly, I still highly recommend
the Burj Khalifa! lol
I mean, when else will you get to stand at the very top of the world?
Plus, it's directly connected to the Dubai Mall,
so there is endless stuff to see and do!

① Ski Dubai
Skiing in Dubai in the middle of summer...
isn't that a total bucket-list experience? haha
Ski Dubai is located inside the Mall of the Emirates,
which also has a Carrefour—perfect for grabbing
some quick souvenirs!
This was actually my go-to spot for grocery shopping! haha
Since it's an indoor ski resort, the AC is absolutely blasting!
Personally, I prefer the ski slopes back home, but

② Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo
As one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world,
it holds about 10 million liters of water
and is home to over 33,000 marine animals,
including sharks and rays!
It's located right inside the Dubai Mall, making it incredibly easy
to pair with your shopping trip.
Honestly, even if you don't buy a ticket to go inside,
just viewing the massive tank from the outside while exploring the mall
was impressive enough for me!!

③ La Perle by Dragone Show
This is an incredible water-themed show performed in a tailor-made aqua theater.
So many reviews rave about the mind-blowing stunts
that seamlessly transition from water to air!

When I lived in Dubai, I used to hang out at the Dubai Mall all the time!
Honestly, it felt more like an everyday neighborhood spot than a tourist attraction!!
But the place is so unbelievably massive that even I,
with my terrible sense of direction, got lost every single time... Make sure to keep Google Maps open inside!!
Shopping or not, you can easily spend half a day just walking around.

④ Dubai Mall + Fountain Show
It features over 1,200 stores, more than 200 restaurants,
an ice rink, an indoor theme park,
an aquarium, and even a movie theater—it has literally everything!!
For me, whenever I was exhausted from work,
going to the Dubai Mall to watch the fountain show
was my ultimate form of therapy~

I also know a cafe at the Dubai Mall that is absolutely PERFECT
for watching the fountain show!!
I always went to that exact cafe, and oh my...
it brought me so much joy every single time~

💡 Dubai Layover Pro-Tips
During the summer, Dubai is all about air-conditioned, indoor entertainment
revolving around its massive, world-class malls!
Seriously, the AC is so strong that it actually gets freezing cold inside.
That's why I brought a light cardigan with me every single time I visited a mall!
Trust me, you don't want to catch a cold from the AC during your vacation...
It's best to take a vehicle even when moving between nearby buildings!
As a side note, even the bus stops are air-conditioned,
and the metro system is super clean and convenient. So good!

Still,,
Taxi (Uber - cleanest, no typical cabin smell)
Taxi (Careem - slightly cheaper, but can sometimes have a stuffy smell)
Metro
Bus
I highly recommend them in this order!
But walking outside...
Just don't do it, seriously lolololololol

It's definitely best to avoid being outdoors
between 12 PM and 4 PM if possible.

If you have any questions about Dubai,
even the tiniest, most random things—I'm happy to answer them all!
Just drop a comment below~
What should I wear to stay cool?
Is it expensive there?
Can you recommend some delicious dates?
Which chocolate-covered dates taste the best?
I can answer all of these little details!
hahahaha
I've literally bought and tried every single type of chocolate date,
and I even know which specific date varieties are the absolute best!

Instead of leaving the airport, it is recommended to use the lounges and shower rooms at Dubai International Airport. Lounge services start from ~$37, and a pass for the shower room and sauna is ~$17.
We recommend using Uber, as it is the cleanest and free of any peculiar smells. Careem is cheaper than Uber, but it may have an odor that could cause motion sickness.
It is recommended to purchase a fast-track ticket in advance so you can go up without waiting. Non-prime time tickets, which give you access to the 124th, 125th, and 148th floors, start from ~$105.
The indoor air conditioning is very strong and could cause a cold, so it is a good idea to bring a light cardigan. Also, with over 1,200 stores, the space is so vast that it's easy to get lost, so we recommend using Google Maps while walking around.
Ski Dubai is located inside the Mall of the Emirates, allowing you to enjoy a cool environment even in midsummer. Carrefour is also located in the same mall, making it convenient for buying simple souvenirs or doing some grocery shopping.
