If there is one absolute must-do activity when visiting Dubai, it has to be the desert safari.

Yes, it can get incredibly hot and a bit exhausting,

but standing in the middle of those vast red dunes is an unforgettable experience.

After all, how often do you get to explore a real desert?

Here is my honest, sweat-drenched, but highly rewarding review

of what to expect and how to make the most of your trip.

If you have a layover in Dubai, a desert safari is the perfect way to spend your time.

Since I had a 2-night stopover rather than a quick touch-and-go, I booked a morning city tour followed by a 7-hour afternoon desert safari. If you are tight on time, there are shorter 4-hour morning tour options available as well.

Most tours offer convenient hotel pickup. Some operators even offer airport pickup, which is highly recommended if you are on a tight layover schedule.

This involves riding in a 4x4 SUV as it drifts, climbs, and slides down massive sand dunes. Think of it as a natural roller coaster on sand.

The vehicle tilts at some wild angles, and sliding down the steep dunes can be a bit nerve-wracking at first, but it is an absolute blast!

A quick word of warning: if you suffer from severe motion sickness, or have back or neck issues, dune bashing can be quite rough. If this is a concern, booking a private tour allows you to ask the driver to take it easy and go at a slower pace.

For my husband and me, we shared the ride with two other travelers and honestly wished the driver went even faster! It was incredibly fun.

After the ride, you get plenty of time to walk around, take photos, and watch the sunset.

I just wore normal clothes, but looking back, I have one major regret.

Also, depending on the season, Dubai can be intensely hot and humid. Bring some cooling body wipes or powder sheets to help wipe away sweat and keep you feeling fresh.

While the desert activities were amazing, staying at the camp for the dinner and show felt incredibly draining. If you are already jet-lagged from a long flight, the extra hours can feel exhausting.

That said, if you have plenty of energy and want a full cultural experience, the 7-hour tour is still a solid choice. The performances are entertaining, and if you visit during the cooler winter months, sitting outside in the desert breeze is actually quite pleasant.

Just manage your expectations regarding the food and entertainment—think of it as a fun, touristy cultural showcase rather than a Michelin-starred experience.
