Bangkok boasts an incredible array of local dishes, and usually, when I travel there, I'm all about diving into those authentic Thai flavors. However, sometimes, especially during a longer trip, a sudden, undeniable craving for Korean food hits hard.
I used to only start missing Korean cuisine after about two weeks abroad. Maybe it's because I'm older now, or perhaps my taste buds have simply changed, but lately, that craving can strike even sooner!
Another scenario is when you just want a truly hearty and satisfying meal while traveling. While local dishes can certainly fill you up, when that specific 'comfort food' craving hits, nothing quite beats a taste of home.
That's why I'm sharing my top pick for Korean food in Bangkok: Dongdaemun, conveniently located near Asok Station.

I stumbled upon it by chance, and it turned out to be fantastic!

Without a doubt, the standout dish at Dongdaemun near Asok Station is their Gimbap. Everyone in my group agreed it was incredibly delicious. Personally, I'm not usually a fan of gimbap with fish cake (eomuk), but this one was so good it completely won me over.
The flavor strikes a perfect balance – it's like a delicious fusion of classic, old-school gimbap and the more modern, refined versions you find today. It beautifully bridges the gap between those two styles. (Hopefully, that makes sense!)
While I typically lean towards the contemporary style of gimbap, I know many people prefer the nostalgic, traditional taste. Dongdaemun's gimbap seems to perfectly capture both, making it a hit with everyone in our party, regardless of their preference!

Our main dishes were actually stews. Both the Kimchi Jjigae and Doenjang Jjigae were excellent. Just a heads-up: the accompanying rice portions aren't huge, so pairing your stew with an order of gimbap makes for a perfectly satisfying meal. If you only stick to the rice, you might find it a tad insufficient.

The restaurant primarily features private room-style seating. Many diners were enjoying grilled meats, but on this particular visit, we were focused on stews. We decided to save the Korean BBQ for our next trip.
Honestly, I wasn't sure if we'd actually make it back...

But before our trip ended, we absolutely did! We went back and enjoyed some fantastic Korean BBQ. The marinated short ribs (Yangnyeom Galbi) were incredibly flavorful.

We also ordered ramen, and I was so eager to eat it before it got soggy that I almost forgot to snap a picture!
At least I got a quick shot of the ramen; the Naengmyeon (cold noodles) disappeared before I even thought about my camera!

Here's the exact location for Dongdaemun, a highly recommended Bangkok eatery. If your accommodation is near Asok Station, it's an easy walk. They're open from 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM. A great bonus is that the staff speaks Korean, making ordering and requests super easy if you're a Korean speaker. Although the seating is primarily in private rooms, which might suggest limited capacity, the interior is surprisingly spacious. Both times I visited, we didn't have to wait, despite the restaurant being quite popular. It seems to be a go-to spot for a proper, satisfying meal.
So, next time that Korean food craving hits during your Bangkok adventure, Dongdaemun is definitely the place to go. Recharge your energy with a hearty meal and get back to exploring!
