Just a couple of days before the world-famous Boryeong Mud Festival kicks off, I paid a visit to a remarkably serene Daecheon Beach.

As South Korea's ultimate summer celebration, the mud festival takes over this beautiful coastline every year. For 2026, the festivities run from July 24 to August 9, meaning the entire beach is currently buzzing with final setup energy.

Driving in, the massive roadside billboards advertising the Boryeong Mud Festival immediately catch your eye.

Promoting the 29th annual festival for 2026 (July 24–August 9) with vibrant, mud-splattered illustrations, the signs feel like they are asking every passerby: Are you ready for summer?

This massive event is divided into several themed zones, including the General Zone, Family Zone, Mud Water Park, and even a Pet Zone. It's a complete 24/7 summer carnival, featuring mud slides and obstacle courses by day, and live concerts and fireworks by night.

Visiting Daecheon Beach right before the madness starts felt incredibly special—like catching a giant taking one last deep breath before the show begins.

One of the first structures you notice along the boardwalk is the seasonal summer police station and the water safety headquarters.

Stretching over 2.2 miles, Daecheon Beach is fully staffed with lifeguards and emergency rescue equipment during the peak season. It ensures that the millions of international and local tourists flocking here for the mud festival can enjoy the ocean with complete peace of mind.

Right now, with empty benches and dry, untouched sand framing the safety center, there is a peaceful, laid-back charm that completely disappears once the crowds arrive.

Stepping down onto the beach, the most striking sight wasn't people, but the intricate web of tractor tracks covering the sand.

With the main stage, mud experience zones, and the water park structures scheduled to open in just two days, heavy machinery has been working overtime to level the sand and transport heavy festival gear.

While the horizon looks wide and empty, the geometric patterns carved into the sand serve as a quiet, exciting prelude to the wild energy about to unfold here.

An Early Taste of Summer

Even though the festival grounds are still under construction, early-bird vacationers are already making the most of the gorgeous July weather.

Families with kids splashing in the shallow tide and people floating leisurely on inner tubes gave the beach a cozy, local-favorite vibe. It's the perfect, relaxed atmosphere before the global spotlight shines on this coast.

Daecheon's Iconic Photo Spots—Without the Lines!

Located right in the center of the beach, the giant Daecheon landmark sculpture is an absolute must-visit photo spot.

During the peak of the mud festival, you'd easily have to wait in a long line just to snap a single photo here.

Visiting early meant I had the entire spot to myself. With the calm ocean and the lush pine trees framing the background, it perfectly captures Daecheon's unique blend of resort-style luxury and natural coastal beauty.

The Oceanfront Hotels: Basecamp for Mud Festival Goers

Just behind the sandy beach, a long row of hotels and resorts stretches along the 2.2-mile coastline, surrounded by local restaurants and shops.

With nearly 2 million domestic and international travelers expected to descend upon Boryeong over the next two weeks, these rooms will soon be completely booked out.

Seeing the quiet hotel windows and occasional travelers walking by right now made the upcoming festival rush feel even more dramatic. It's truly the calm before the storm!

The Mud Experience & Safety Hub

At one end of the beach sits the permanent Mud Experience facilities and the main safety center.

During the festival, this area becomes the nerve center for life jacket rentals, safety announcements, and medical aid, keeping the festival's flow safe and organized.

Looking out from the center, the tractor-patterned sand gives way to peaceful, rolling waves, with the faint silhouette of a distant island resting on the horizon. It's an incredibly scenic spot.

The quirky and colorful design of the Summer Police Station building also caught my eye—definitely worth a quick photo!

From resting peacefully on the white sands to swarming in mid-air whenever someone tosses a snack...
