If you're thinking about summer festivals in August,
the Boryeong Mud Festival is definitely
one of Korea's must-visit summer festivals.
I actually just visited today! On Saturday, August 1st, and
I instantly understood why hundreds of thousands of people
flock to it every year once I got there.
Honestly, when I went about 10 years ago,
it wasn't quite this grand in scale.
But this time, I saw so many international tourists
and it has become a super exciting global festival,
blending DJ performances with various mud activities!
Today, I'll provide a comprehensive guide to the Boryeong Mud Festival, drawing from my direct experience.
I'll cover my real-time review from visiting, festival information, what to bring,
ticket booking methods, the performance lineup, and all the essential details you'll need.

The Boryeong Mud Festival is Korea's representative
global, hands-on summer festival,
held every summer at Daecheon Beach.
Utilizing natural mud harvested directly from Boryeong's tidal flats, the festival offers diverse mud activities like mud slides, mud pools, and color painting.
You can also enjoy performances, delicious food, and water fun all at once, making it a festival consistently loved by both domestic and international tourists.
I visited early in the festival, on Saturday, August 1st,
and as expected, there were so many people, with a high proportion of international visitors,
it truly felt like being at an international festival.

The Boryeong Mud Festival
is divided into an Adult Zone and a Family Zone.
You can choose based on age and the number of people in your group!
Admission tickets include a ~$3 Boryeong Love Gift Certificate,
which can be used for food within the festival grounds or at local shops.

2. My On-Site Review from August 1st
(Including Food Options)
The General Zone felt just like a Waterbomb festival!
I entered the General Zone first, and
the atmosphere was absolutely electrifying right from the entrance.
DJ music was constantly playing,
and the mud experience zone hosts
kept the energy high and exciting,
with various mud activities continuously underway.
There was even a stage where water cannons were fired,
and dance parties were held – it was incredibly thrilling!
The experience zones were incredibly diverse,
with mud slides, mud pools, mud wrestling, and more.
The areas were packed with people enjoying various activities,
so there were quite a few waiting lines for each zone.
Periodically, staff members
kept spraying cool water,
allowing us to cool down and play despite the hot weather.
They also continuously replenished the mud, so we could
slather ourselves with plenty of mud throughout the day.
The Family Zone is perfect for visiting with kids!
I decided to check out the Family Zone since entry was permitted!
The atmosphere was definitely different.
If the General Zone was all about music, water cannons, and energetic mud activities,
the Family Zone had a more relaxed,
kid-friendly water park vibe where children could play safely.
There were several air slides and water play facilities specifically for kids,
so many parents and children were experiencing the mud together.
The food options were more diverse than I expected!
When you're having so much fun, it's easy to get hungry quickly,
but there's a huge food zone set up inside the event area,
so you don't need to worry about meals.
The menu was surprisingly diverse!

I expected the festival food to be super expensive,
but most items were around ~$3 to ~$7,
so it was perfectly fine to enjoy without any burden.
Plus, I could use the Boryeong Sarang Gift Certificate for ~$3 that I received upon entry,
and using it here made the value for money absolutely fantastic!
We tried the Yeolmu Guksu and Seafood Ramyeon.
Since it was the middle of summer, the chilled Yeolmu Guksu tasted incredibly refreshing,
and the Seafood Ramyeon was packed with so much seafood,
it was perfect for a hearty meal.
And they were also selling
Boryeong Mud Beer, a unique brew you can only taste in Boryeong.
It perfectly matched the festival vibe,
and many people were enjoying a glass!
Free Color Mud Painting Booth
If you head next to the food zone,
you'll find a free experience where you can apply color mud
freely to your face, arms, or body.
You can personalize your look using mud and brushes,
which makes it fun to paint each other,
and it was fantastic for taking photos too!
3. What to Bring & Locker Rental Tips
After experiencing the Boryeong Mud Festival myself,
I realized that the level of satisfaction really depends on
how well you prepare your essentials.
Especially on weekends, it gets very crowded,
so I highly recommend preparing in advance!

Mud gets on everything more than you'd expect,
and you'll constantly be hit by water cannons,
so a waterproof phone pouch and a change of clothes are absolute must-haves.
While many people wore slippers or sandals,
going barefoot or wearing aqua shoes is essential for the activities,
so I recommend aqua shoes for comfort.
Grab a locker as soon as you arrive!
This is an interactive festival where you play with mud and water all over your body,
so using a locker is a must!
The lockers are near the entrance, so they're easy to find,
but when I went on Saturday, August 1st around 3 PM,
The lockers were already full, and I almost couldn't use one!
Luckily, someone suddenly took their belongings out and left,
I seized that perfect moment, waited for about 10 minutes, and finally managed to store my bags..!
Even with a good number of lockers, if you arrive late like I did,
it's such a popular festival that the lockers can run out and you'll have to wait.
There were even separate lockers specifically for international visitors,
which just goes to show how many international tourists were there.
The lockers operated using a kiosk system,
as an unmanned service,
(But there was a staff member nearby to help if any issues arose!)

Once you're done using it, you can retrieve your belongings at any time,
and the locker operating hours are the same as the festival's operating hours,
so keep that in mind when using them!
4. Performance Lineup & Attractions
The charm of the Boryeong Mud Festival is
that you can fill your entire day with fun, from mud experiences in the afternoon to performances and night content in the evening!

making the festival atmosphere even more electrifying.

The day I visited, August 1st,
was the second day of the K-Hip Hop Festival.
With artists like Skull & Haha, DinDin, Hanhae,
Hangzoo, Black Nine, Marin, Reddy, Bloo,
Queen WA$ABII, Tray B, GEEPU, and many other
diverse hip hop artists performing,
there were so many people excitedly waiting for the performances.
I headed home around 7:15 PM,
so I couldn't watch the performances until the very end,
but you can see how many spectators had already gathered around the stage!
I was a bit sad that I couldn't stay for the entire performance,
but if you have enough time, there are so many things to enjoy well into the night,
so if you have the energy, I really hope you'll stay and enjoy it all to the very end!
