After a relaxing overnight stay at Sono Belle Resort, we weren't quite ready to head straight home. We decided to explore a nearby attraction, and just about 2 miles away, we found the Independence Hall of Korea!
Some friends had an earlier appointment and had to leave, but the rest of us decided to explore the Independence Hall together before parting ways.

Getting to Independence Hall
The Independence Hall is easily accessible, just about a 15-minute drive from Cheonan Station (Subway Line 1) or the Cheonan Express Bus Terminal. While the surrounding area doesn't boast many other tourist spots or restaurants, the grounds themselves are incredibly vast.
We initially planned for a quick 1-2 hour visit, but it took us over 20 minutes just to walk from the entrance to the main hall!
Parking fees are quite reasonable: ~$1 for small vehicles (25 passengers or less) and ~$2 for large vehicles (over 25 passengers). There's no time limit. You can also get a ~$1 discount if you drive a compact car, hybrid, low-emission vehicle, or have a disability registration card. Veterans and their families with proper identification park for free!
And don't worry, there are plenty of parking spaces available.
Near the entrance, you'll find a general information center. It's more of an administrative office than a resting area. A separate visitor's lounge is located in the building near the fountain, just in front of the information center.
If you're planning to visit in September or October, there are some essential items you'll want to bring.
The sun can be quite strong in the morning and afternoon, so I highly recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, or a parasol to protect yourself from the UV rays. Even though the weather starts to cool down a bit, it can still feel hot. There's hardly any shade on the walk to the exhibition halls, so you'll definitely work up a sweat!
Near the entrance, you'll find several dining options, including a Twosome Place cafe, Mom's Touch (a popular Korean fast-food chain), Noodle Tree, and Ruru Pasta.
Inside the Gyeoreui Jip (Grand Hall of the Nation) at Independence Hall, there's also Cafe Byeolmurii, which is perfectly located for a refreshing break during your walk.
Along the way, you'll also spot an E-Mart24 convenience store and a traditional Hodu-gwaja (walnut cake) shop, a famous Cheonan specialty. One of my friends bought some, and though I initially grumbled, "Who eats hot walnut cakes in this weather?" I quickly changed my tune after trying one. They were delicious!
Good news: there's no entrance fee for the Independence Hall itself!
Booroong-i Shuttle
The Booroong-i shuttle (an XR experience shuttle) would have been incredibly convenient, but unfortunately, it wasn't operating on the day I visited. It was temporarily suspended for safety inspections from 08/22/2026 to 08/28/2026. Once it's back in service, I highly recommend taking it – walking the entire grounds can be quite tiring!
Tickets for the Booroong-i are ~$3 for visitors aged 13 and over, and ~$2 for children aged 12 and under. A single ticket allows for unlimited rides.

As you walk, you'll see Baeknyeonmot (Lotus Pond) on your right.
Baeknyeonmot is an artificial lake, approximately 0.85 miles in circumference and about 6 feet deep. It symbolizes the purest spirit of patriotism and national devotion that blossomed during Korea's colonial period under Japanese rule.
Seeing so many Korean flags (Taegeukgi) proudly displayed fills one with a sense of reverence and national pride.
The Independence Hall was established to properly document and widely share the history of Korea's anti-Japanese struggle. For anyone interested in understanding Korean history and culture, it's an absolutely essential place to visit.
To the right, the majestic Stele of King Gwanggaeto stands tall.
This stele is a replica of the original tombstone of King Gwanggaeto the Great, the 19th monarch of the ancient Goguryeo kingdom, located in Ji'an, Jilin Province, China. It is the largest and tallest stele in East Asia, grandly recreated to its original form. It stands as a precious cultural heritage, vividly showcasing the magnificent historical facts of Goguryeo within East Asia.
Even though it was my first time visiting, my friends and I kept asking if we had been here before. I think it's because the site occasionally appears in various media, making it feel familiar.
Don't miss the interactive exhibition hall, 'Experience the Independence Movement Together'! You can make reservations in advance, or if you prefer, walk-in admissions are available at specific times.
The Children, Youth, and Adult Zone is open to children aged 8 and above (accompanied by parents); adults cannot enter alone. Friends with their children headed into this experience, while the rest of us made our way to the cafe.
The prices for coffee and beverages are quite affordable here.
There's also a good variety of pastries, perfect to enjoy with your coffee. The seating was ample, and honestly, if there hadn't been a cafe, I think we all might have collapsed from the heat!
What I've shown you is just a small part of the Independence Hall's promotional and experience centers. Beyond these, you'll find a wealth of attractions, including permanent exhibition halls (Galleries 1-6) and special planned exhibition halls. To explore all the exhibition halls in sequence, you'd likely need at least half a day or more.
I've introduced you to the Cheonan Independence Hall, a fantastic destination for a family trip with children. As the weather becomes more pleasant for outdoor activities from mid-September, be sure to visit and enjoy a truly enriching experience.

The Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan is regularly closed every Monday. However, if Monday is a public holiday, it operates as usual. Operating hours are daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Parking fees are ~$1 for small vehicles (25 seats or less) and ~$2 for large vehicles (over 25 seats). A discount of ~$1 is applied to compact cars, hybrid vehicles, low-emission vehicles, and vehicles with a disability registration card. Vehicles of national merit recipients and their bereaved families are exempt from fees.
The 'Booroong-i' sightseeing train costs ~$3 for visitors aged 13 and above, and ~$2 for children aged 12 and under. Tickets allow for unlimited rides. The route starts from the Hall of the Nation, passes through the Unification Wish Garden and the Memorial Area, and arrives at the Grand Hall of the Nation.
During the morning and afternoon hours in September and October, the sunlight can be strong. We recommend bringing items to protect yourself from UV rays, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and parasols. There is no shade when walking from the entrance of the Independence Hall to the main building, so you might sweat.
