What is Ganesha? Pink Ganesha Location & How to Get There My Visit to Chachoengsao's Pink Ganesha |
1. What is Ganesha?
The Hindu God with an Elephant Head
Ganesha is one of the most beloved Hindu deities, recognized by his elephant head and human body. He is widely revered as the remover of obstacles and the bringer of good luck and prosperity.

You might wonder why a Hindu deity like Ganesha is so popular in Thailand, a predominantly Buddhist country.
Historically, ancient Thai kingdoms had strong Hindu influences. Ganesha, as a bringer of good fortune, beautifully complements Buddhist teachings, making him incredibly popular across Thailand.
Furthermore, given that the elephant is Thailand's national animal, Ganesha isn't just a minor deity; he's seen as a more familiar and cherished figure.

Discovering the Pink Ganesha in Chachoengsao, near Bangkok
Among the many Ganesha statues, the most unique and special is the Pink Ganesha, located in Chachoengsao, a charming province just a short drive from Bangkok.

While Chachoengsao is technically a suburb of Bangkok, it's less frequented by international tourists compared to popular spots like Pattaya or Hua Hin. This means public transportation options are quite limited.
To reach the Pink Ganesha, your best bet is to either rent a car from Bangkok or arrange a taxi charter. Personally, I highly recommend a taxi charter. Driving in Bangkok can be notoriously challenging with heavy traffic and complex routes.
I opted for a taxi charter, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences during my month-long stay in Bangkok.

Keep in mind that the journey to Chachoengsao takes approximately 2 hours each way. Beyond the Pink Ganesha, Chachoengsao boasts several other hidden gems, like the stunning Mirror Temple, making a full-day excursion worthwhile. I recommend booking a taxi charter for at least 10 hours to fully explore the area.

3. My Visit to Chachoengsao's Pink Ganesha
A Popular Destination Buzzing with Locals and Tourists Alike, Despite the Distance
We kicked off our 10-hour taxi charter from Bangkok bright and early at 8 AM. A crucial tip: always ask your driver to take the highway (toll road) when leaving Bangkok, as traffic can be incredibly congested!
The Pink Ganesha resides within the Wat Saman Rattanaram temple complex. As you wander through the grounds, you'll encounter a collection of rather peculiar character statues.

I learned that these statues are intended to make the temple more appealing and friendly for children, but I found them to be a bit unsettling. Nevertheless, once you pass these characters and head towards the riverside, you'll be greeted by Thailand's most famous Pink Ganesha.
Despite Ganesha being a male deity, this particular statue is renowned worldwide for its striking pink color, intricate nail art, and surprisingly alluring pose.

As Ganesha is believed to bring good fortune, you'll often see locals earnestly making wishes. A fascinating tradition here is that instead of speaking directly to Ganesha, you whisper your wish into the ear of one of the mouse statues positioned in front of him, and the mouse will then relay your message to the deity.

Beyond Ganesha, the temple complex is also home to various local Thai deities and another significant wish-granting god, Brahma. You'll find yourself spending a considerable amount of time exploring all the different shrines and statues.

Chachoengsao offers much more to see, including the captivating Mirror Temple and the Golden Temple. If you have extra time during your Bangkok trip, I highly recommend making the journey to explore the unique cultural treasures of Chachoengsao!
