Today, I'm excited to share my story about 'Cefalù,' the city in Sicily that I visited with the lowest expectations, yet it left the deepest impression on me.
Honestly, I have a bit of a contrarian streak – I often find myself wanting to skip the 'must-see' spots that everyone raves about.
So, I really debated, 'Do I actually need to visit Cefalù?' I thought about it a lot.
To cut to the chase: I would have seriously regretted not going!
In fact, my only regret is not staying for a night.
Let my review of this beautiful Sicilian journey begin!

It's a charming coastal town nestled on the northern side of Sicily, Italy, just about an hour away by train from Palermo.
With its crystal-clear Mediterranean waters and the magnificent 'Rocca' mountain cradling the town like a natural screen, every snap you take here is guaranteed to be a postcard-perfect shot.
What's more, Cefalù is the very backdrop for that iconic, romantic scene in the globally acclaimed masterpiece film <Cinema Paradiso>, where a movie screen was set up right on the beach.
The streets burst with beautiful pottery and vibrant colors,
exuding a relaxed charm that is simply pure love!
When you visit Palermo, Cefalù is a popular day trip destination, so train tickets tend to sell out surprisingly fast.
Take the Trenitalia train from Palermo Centrale station to Cefalù station.
Travel time: Approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour one-way
While you can easily buy tickets with a credit card at the station kiosk, tickets often sell out, so if your travel plans are firm, I highly recommend booking online in advance.
A one-way ticket typically costs around ~$8 to ~$10.
If you're planning a day trip like I did, definitely book your train tickets for the earliest departure and the latest return.
Trust me, the moment you arrive, you'll fall head over heels for this charming town and won't want to tear yourself away!
From Cefalù train station to the main tourist spots,
it's a pleasant walk, taking about 10-15 minutes.
0. Cefalù Beach
📍 Porta Pescara (Porta Marina)

You've likely seen this on Instagram – the iconic beach with parasols unfurled behind that charming archway, brimming with the romance of Cinema Paradiso!
Step through Porta Pescara (Porta Marina), the historic archway of the Old Town, and you're immediately greeted by the breathtaking blue sea, harmonizing perfectly with the orange-tiled rooftops lining the coast. This is hands-down Cefalù's best photo spot! In the peak summer season, the beach transforms into a vibrant canvas, dotted with countless colorful parasols.
Even though the cafes and restaurants lining the beach boast prime sea-facing views, their prices for seating and drinks are surprisingly reasonable. So, whether you're taking a dip or not, it's the perfect spot to savor an espresso or a refreshing granita and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
1. Rocca Viewpoint Parco della Rocca di Cefalù
📍 Parco della Rocca di Cefalù

I honestly hadn't planned on visiting this spot,
but seriously, you HAVE to go!
They say the hike usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
I was honestly hesitant to go because of my train schedule, but I pushed through, and WOW – the views from up here are absolutely out of this world!
The Saracen stairs leading to the summit are quite steep from the start, and the stone path can be rough, so be prepared for a bit of a workout!
But don't worry, even kids are making their way up, as you can see in the photos!
Just a heads-up, flip-flops aren't permitted for entry,
I went in sandals and was a bit nervous, but I made it through!
There are plenty of sights to see along the way,
While the climb might make you break a sweat, standing at the summit and gazing down at the red terracotta roofs and the endlessly stretching, crystal-clear panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea was an experience I would have deeply regretted missing.
2. Cefalù Cathedral (Duomo di Cefalù)

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, this cathedral invites you to experience the grandeur of medieval Norman architecture.
The golden mosaic of Christ Pantocrator adorning the apse of the cathedral is considered a masterpiece of medieval art. Visiting in the afternoon, the intense sunlight streaming through the high windows blends beautifully with the interior's golden hues, creating a truly magnificent sight.
There's no separate admission fee, making it easy to explore without any financial burden,
and don't forget to enjoy the open-air cafés in the square in front of the cathedral!
Like anywhere, Sicily is beautiful enough to just wander around, but you'll definitely want to rely heavily on Google Maps.
There are many hidden gems that can be tricky to find, and many more waiting to be discovered through a quick search.
With so many beautiful places, you'll be constantly sharing on Instagram and other messaging apps, so make sure you have ample data with your roaming plan.
When in Italy, it's best to sign up for at least 3GB of data daily, and I highly recommend an eSIM from a provider known for excellent connectivity.

Recommended Hotel Locations in Cefalù
While every town in Sicily is beautiful,
Cefalù is truly exceptionally stunning,
so even if accommodation costs are higher, the value is absolutely worth it.
Instead of staying around the train station,
you'll get a better sense of being on vacation if you choose a place near the main attractions like the beach or the cathedral.
Here are some places I looked into while preparing for my trip,
and I'd love to share them with you.
Keep in mind that July and August are peak season, coinciding with Italy's nationwide holiday period (Ferragosto, etc.). Even budget-friendly accommodations can see prices surge two to three times higher than the off-season, so booking early is key to saving a little money.

📍 Old Town / Beach-Centric Accommodation (Focus on Romance & Accessibility)
This is the location I recommend most!
1) Taliammari
• Approximately a 12-15 minute walk from the train station
• Within a 3-5 minute walk to the Cathedral and the beach
(Located in the heart of the Old Town, right by the sea)
Its location is unbeatable, truly a prime spot.
And with ocean views from the room terraces, it offers peak romance.
Highly recommended for honeymooners or couples!

• Approximately a 10-minute walk from the train station
• Within about a 5-minute walk to the Cathedral and the beach

3) Artemis Hotel
This hotel is a modern 4-star transformation of a former convent,
just a 5-minute walk from the train station, making it super convenient to get around,
and it's highly rated by Koreans for its friendly service.
• 7-10 minute walk to the main beach
• Approximately a 15-minute walk to the Old Town center
Approx. ~$207-~$345
(It seems to have gotten much pricier compared to the off-season!)

📍 Accommodations Near the Coastal Promenade (Focus on Relaxation & Hotel Staycations)
The two places below are on the pricier side,
but they offer excellent resort facilities including swimming pools,
making them perfect for a romantic honeymoon.

Sicily is a much larger island than you might think,
which can make planning your trip a bit challenging.
Everything is so beautiful that you'll struggle with what to include and what to leave out.
Cefalù, a place I visited almost on a whim, without much expectation,
has now become a jewel of Sicily, remaining the warmest memory in my mind for the longest time.
It's far too dazzling and lovely to just pass through on a day trip, so make sure to visit, even if it's just for a short stay.
And definitely pack your swimsuit~
It's lovely just to gaze at it, but you absolutely must dive right into the Mediterranean Sea!

A Trenitalia train from Palermo Central Station to Cefalù Station takes approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour. Since train tickets can sell out, we strongly recommend booking online in advance once your travel itinerary is set.
The entrance fee for La Rocca viewpoint is 5 euros, which can be purchased from a machine or a staff member. The Saseno stairs leading to the summit are steep and the stone path is rough, so flip-flops are not permitted. Sandals, however, are allowed.
Cefalù Cathedral boasts the grandeur of medieval Norman style, with a golden mosaic image of Jesus (Pantocrator) adorning the entire interior. There is no separate entrance fee to explore it.
Instead of staying near the train station, accommodations in the old town center near the beach or the cathedral offer better romance and accessibility. July and August are peak holiday seasons throughout Italy, and even budget-friendly accommodations can see prices surge 2-3 times or more compared to off-peak seasons, so it's best to book early.
The blue sea and coastline that you encounter immediately after passing through Porta Pescara, the historic archway of the Old Town, is Cefalù's best photo spot. Cafes and restaurants along the beach, despite their prime seafront location, generally offer reasonable prices for seating and beverages.
