T-Casual vs. T-Familiar: Understanding the Differences & Prices
Planning a trip to Barcelona means getting around, and a public transport pass is an absolute must-have. Let's face it, figuring out the best option can feel a bit overwhelming, but I'm here to simplify it for you!
Barcelona offers a variety of transport tickets, but for most visitors, it really comes down to choosing between two main options: the T-Casual or the T-Familiar.
Today, we'll dive deep into Barcelona's transport ticket types, compare their benefits, and walk you through exactly how to purchase and use them.
1. Comparing Barcelona Transport Tickets

While Barcelona has a range of public transport tickets, for most tourists, the choice boils down to just two: the T-Casual and the T-Familiar.
Let's break down the details of each ticket to help you decide.
Category | T-Casual | T-Familiar |
Number of Journeys | 10 journeys | 8 journeys |
Number of Users | 1 person | Multiple people can share |
Zone 1 Price | ~$14 | ~$13 |
Transfers | Within 75 minutes | Within 75 minutes |
Airport L9 Sud T1·T2 | Not valid | Not valid |
Most of Barcelona's main tourist attractions are located within Zone 1, so you typically won't need to worry about different zones. The biggest difference between these two tickets is whether they can be shared among multiple people.
It's important to note that neither ticket is valid for the L9 Sud metro line to/from Barcelona Airport (Terminals 1 & 2). For airport transfers, we generally recommend the Aerobus for convenience.
Below, we'll explore each ticket in more detail.
2. Solo Travelers: Choose the T-Casual

The T-Casual is a personal ticket valid for 10 journeys, designed for a single user.
As of 2026, the Zone 1 price is ~$14. If you use all 10 journeys, each ride costs approximately ~$1.40. This is a significant saving compared to buying a single ticket, which costs ~$3 per ride.
If you're spending 3-4 days in Barcelona and plan to use the metro and bus to visit sights like Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, Barceloneta beach, and Montjuïc, the T-Casual is a solid choice for solo travelers.
However, remember that the T-Casual is strictly for one person. Couples cannot share one T-Casual by tapping it twice for two people.

Both the T-Casual and T-Familiar allow for transfers within 75 minutes of your first tap, without deducting an additional journey.
For instance, you can transfer from a bus to the metro or to a different bus route. You can make up to 3 transfers within a single journey, meaning you can use up to 4 different modes of transport.
Just be aware that not all subsequent taps within 75 minutes count as a transfer. For example, tapping again on the *same* bus route will deduct another journey.
Metro transfers within the same station are typically seamless and don't count as a new journey, as you stay within the paid area.
3. Traveling in a Group? Consider the T-Familiar

The T-Familiar is a multi-person ticket valid for 8 journeys over 30 days from its first use.
As of 2026, the Zone 1 price is ~$13.
Its biggest advantage is that multiple people can share a single ticket.
For example, if two people are riding the metro together, you simply tap the T-Familiar twice. If you're a family of four, you'd tap it four times. This means if two people always travel together, an 8-journey ticket provides 4 combined trips.
Like many European cities, Barcelona is very walkable, so for couples, the T-Familiar often provides enough journeys. If your accommodation is centrally located, like near Plaça de Catalunya, you might find yourself using public transport less frequently than you expect.
When transferring, each person in your group needs to tap the card again, just as they did for the initial boarding.
📌 T-Casual vs. T-Familiar: Which is a better deal?
Based on 2026 Zone 1 prices:
T-Casual costs approximately ~$1.40 per journey (if all 10 are used).
T-Familiar costs approximately ~$1.63 per journey (if all 8 are used).
Keep in mind that when you first purchase a ticket, there's an additional card fee of ~$1 per card. Even with this fee, the T-Casual generally works out to be slightly cheaper per individual journey.
For 2 People | Actual Cost | Shared Journeys |
T-Familiar (1 ticket + 1 card) | ~$14 | 4 trips |
T-Familiar (2 charges + 1 card) | ~$27 | 8 trips |
T-Casual (2 tickets + 2 cards) | ~$30 | 10 trips each (20 total) |
However, buying two separate T-Casual tickets for a couple isn't always the best strategy. Two T-Casuals give you 20 journeys in total. If your Barcelona trip is only 2-3 days and you plan to walk a lot, you might not use all 20 journeys, leading to wasted money.
My personal recommendation for couples is to get one T-Familiar and share it. If you happen to run out of journeys, you can always recharge it. (For example, recharging a T-Familiar twice would give you 16 journeys total).
Since neither of these tickets covers airport transfers, and you'll likely do a fair amount of walking in the city center, the T-Familiar is generally a great choice for two or more people.
But, if you genuinely dislike walking and plan to use public transport for almost every movement, then each person getting their own T-Casual might be a better fit!
4. How to Purchase Barcelona Transport Tickets

All public transport tickets can be purchased from the TMB ticket vending machines found in every metro station.
The initial screen will display various ticket options like Hola Barcelona, Single Ticket, T-Casual, T-Usual, and more.
Don't be alarmed if the language isn't English! Look for the flag icons at the bottom of the screen. The default language is often Catalan.

Simply tap the British flag icon to switch the language to English, making the process much easier!
Then, select either T-Casual or T-Familiar. If you don't see it on the first screen, tap 'Others' to find it.

Next, the machine will ask if you already have a T-mobilitat card. T-mobilitat is the official name for Barcelona's public transport cards.
If this is your first purchase, choose 'Buy a card'. If you already have a card and want to add more journeys, select 'I already have a card' – we'll explain recharging in more detail shortly.
On the following screen, select '1 ZONE' and complete your purchase!

For card payments, insert your card into the slot at the top of the machine. For cash payments, use the slot next to it. The gray card icon in the middle is where you tap your existing T-mobilitat card to recharge it.
5. How to Recharge and Use Your Barcelona Transport Ticket
Once you purchase a ticket from the vending machine, you'll receive a physical T-mobilitat card, like the one pictured.

Both T-Casual and T-Familiar tickets look identical, and the great news is that these cards are rechargeable!
This means you don't need to buy a brand new card every time you run out of journeys. Simply place your existing T-mobilitat card on the card reader at any metro station vending machine to recharge it.
While it's technically possible to switch ticket types when recharging (e.g., recharging a T-Casual with T-Familiar journeys), most travelers will simply recharge with the same ticket type they initially purchased.

Barcelona's public transport tickets can seem complicated at first due to the variety of options. However, for most tourists, understanding the core differences between the T-Casual and T-Familiar makes it quite simple.
✔️ If you're traveling solo and plan to use the metro and bus regularly, the T-Casual is your best bet.
✔️ For two or more people traveling together who also enjoy walking between attractions, the T-Familiar is highly recommended.
✔️ If you're a group who prefers to minimize walking and maximize public transport use, consider each person getting their own T-Casual.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest difference between T-casual and T-familiar Barcelona transport tickets, and what are their respective prices for Zone 1 in 2026?
T-casual is a 10-journey ticket valid for one person only, and its 2026 Zone 1 price is €13.00. T-familiar is an 8-journey ticket that can be shared by multiple people, and its 2026 Zone 1 price is €11.50.
I heard that T-casual and T-familiar tickets cannot be used on the Barcelona Airport L9 Sud T1·T2 line. What are the transfer rules?
Both tickets cannot be used on the Airport L9 Sud T1·T2 line. You can transfer up to 3 times within 75 minutes of the first tap, using a total of 4 different modes of transport, but taking the same bus line again is not considered a transfer.
When purchasing T-casual or T-familiar for the first time at a Barcelona metro station TMB ticket machine, which option should I choose, and how do I top up if I already have a T-mobilitat card?
For a first-time purchase, select 'Buy a card' on the machine screen and then choose '1ZONE'. If you already have a T-mobilitat card, select 'I already have a card' and then place your existing card on the machine's card reader to top it up.
When two people are traveling in Barcelona, which transport ticket, T-casual or T-familiar, is more recommended, and why?
If two people are traveling together and plan to walk a lot between tourist attractions, T-familiar is recommended. This is because T-familiar can be shared by multiple people, and if two people each buy a T-casual, there's a possibility that they might not use all 20 journeys and have some left over.
